50:16 I'm glad you didn't miss these words of Maria, usually everyone misses them! The DLC for Maria is so sad, because Maria is consciously going to her death, she is afraid of pain and death, but she goes to meet her fate with humility, perhaps she does not believe in fate as she told Ernest and thinks that maybe everything will not be so bad for her, and when she will be together with James will have everything okay, but no, she has to die as many as 3 times. After all, she had a task. She wanted to put an end to everything, but she couldn't. She just hoped that everything would happen to everything differently and it was this drop of hope to survive that moved her. Now I'm looking forward to yours passing through Silent Hill 3 and Silent Hill 4

the dog ending is so iconic, i'm very glad you saw it lmao i like your interpretation of maria, i thought pretty much the same thing after playing born from a wish. i think maria is often written off as just another manifestation of the town, when there is so much more to her. yes, she is "born from a wish" and not really real, but there are moments that show that she does have memories and her own feelings: she gets angry and jealous when james rejects her, she cares about laura, she gets annoyed when james don't immediately follow laura into the hospital, etc. she's a much more interesting character than i sometimes think she is given credit for, it's cool to see that you were able to dive deeper into it also, 'in water' is such a heart-breaking ending. the fact that he doesn't even read mary's letter hurts me, it's so tragic. there is no specific canon ending, but there are some hints in external media (like the book of lost memories) that hint towards 'in water' being the "true" ending. it's very much up for debate i don't think that there is any one "true" ending to the game. to me, any of the endings - excluding obvious joke ones lmao - are possible, which is really cool! thank you for such a great let's play, it's been a joy to see someone's first reaction to the original game whilst also playing the remake for the first time! my mind has been very full of silent hill and i'm very happy with that lmao

So I think you may have caught on in the playthrough that Mary didn't die three years ago, and that James killed her very recently. In the Rebirth ending, it seems like Mary is freshly dead, and James actually did it a couple days ago. That's why Laura keeps acting like she talked to Mary recently. You may have caught on to this, so this is more for anyone reading that may still be confused on the timeline.

The rebirth, old gods ending is what is cannon in my head. As if the town tricked him to pull him and then used him to awaken the old gods: the Yellow God Lobsel Vith and it's envoy Valtiel, and the Red God Xuchilbara and it's envoy Pyramid Head. But we all know the real cannon ending is that the dog did it. The dog did the silent hill.

At the end with leaving with Maria, this is the same letter. James realized that he had killed his wife, but could not fully accept it. And he remained in his delusional state. Where he met Maria again. And his nightmare seems to be repeating itself again.

All these points for getting this or that ending, just keep some invisible score in favor of this or that ending, it is not necessary to fulfill ALL the conditions. The guides list the events that add the score to this or that ending. Whichever score of the 3 turns out to be higher is the ending you deserve. This is a rather unique, almost role-playing mechanic, which makes the player's experience more complete and logical, HOW he passed the game, that ending he will get. Moreover, there is not a single obvious choice in the game, by which one could guess that we are "making a choice" in favor of one of the endings. It is like a hidden psychological test of the player. A pure test. Without the ability to choose consciously. This is another detail that makes SH2 a masterpiece and ethonon of psychological horror.

This was a great playthrough, really looking forward to SH3. Will you be playing the PC version? I remember it being quite a pain to get it working well on modern Windows, for me it had some annoying stuttering issues and controls weren't fully working either, but I was able to get everything working flawlessly eventually. Feel free to ask if you need some advice on how to fix the game, though it may be much easier to just emulate the PS2 version. The main difference is that the flashlight doesn't look as nice in the PS2 version.

I don't think Maria is a real person. She is James's invention. And as far as I remember, Laura never saw Maria. She also has a similar face to his wife and even her name is almost the same. I actually don't like the extra scenario for this reason because it raises a lot of unnecessary questions. It's also strange why she's talking to the ghost there. I think this is just an explanation in James's head when he begins to realize that his wife is dead and Maria is just a fantasy. The resurrection ending is without Mary's letter because you can't get it on your first playthrough. So this is just a bonus for those who are playing the game not for the first time.

Yeah, if you take the extra scenario into the account, she's a fully sentient being created by the town, but she's made 'only' to make James suffer, in Mary's image. That's what she realizes at the end of Born from a Wish. That's also why this is extra screwed up, too; the moment James leaves, she disappears, so she cannot let him do that (hence why she fights you at the end of the game). She can talk to Ernest, because she's a creation of the town too. You could look at it as a metaphor too, I guess, but either way it's not great; imagine being created just to suffer, due to someone's guilt. Not the best situation to find yourself in. Either way, it is what it is.
