In fitting tribute to Joni Mitchell, the TNT network presented an all-star celebration at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City, April 6, 2000. Many legendary performers sang Mitchell's songs, including James Taylor, Elton John, Wynonna Judd, Bryan Adams, Cyndi Lauper, Diana Krall, and Richard Thompson of Fairport Convention fame. Emcee was Ashley Judd. Mitchell herself ended the evening with a rendition of "Both Sides Now" with a full 70 piece orchestra. (description from Wikipedia) This concert has never been re-broadcast, nor released in any form for sale. I do not own the copyrights to any of the material contained herein and simply present this event for fair use and historical purposes.

I’m probably in the minority of listeners here, but as a composer-jazz pianist, I loved “A Case Of You” performed by Diana Krall. She sang the song with deep respect and abundant soul!

I don't think you're in a minority and if you are then it's a very privileged one to say the least. As far as I can tell, this was performed with voice and piano only which, in and of itself, is a major leap into transparency and magnification. Diana is the very epitome of artistry.

Joni sings "Both Sides Now" at the end of the evening and it sounds like a song a wise old person would have written. Then we remember that she wrote that song in 1967, when she was only 23 years old. Some people have a gift and live their lives accordingly.

And this was a hit again. Just when you think she's an old person sitting on her extensive laurels she walks on and just blows everybody away, just like anytime she's on a stage. I'm new to most of her music but can't wait to go through her back catalogue. This is beyond anything. "It's life's allusions I recall I really don't know life at all". How the hell does a 23 year old write that ffs

The negative comments here leave me perplexed and a bit saddened. Were the performances perfect? Of course not. Would others artists have done a better job of interpreting Joni's songs? Perhaps. But every person on that stage was there for the sole purpose of paying tribute to one of their musical heroes and displayed for all to see (and mindlessly criticize) what her songs meant to them through these amazing performances. Oh, and for the record, each and every performer in this video has more musical talent in their left pinky toenail than the haters here will ever have, no matter how many tortured lifetimes you may live. Listen to what you like, don't listen to what you don't, simple as that. Peace.

At a press conference following the release of her photobook "Sex," wherein Madonna literally revealed herself, a reporter asked her "So what's next? Some internal organs, maybe?" That moment exposed (if you'll pardon the pun) how music had fallen victim to what Joni called the star-maker machinery behind the popular song. Joni, unlike Madonna, revealed her insides - in particular, to put it crudely, her guts - through an astonishing poetic arrangement of words and similes and metaphors that gave a more tangible form to what was aching in our own guts, accompanied by a soulful twang of her guitar or the sound of her fingernails clicking on a keyboard - and of course, that voice - that remains wholly unmatched and probably will forever. To have been alive during the time of Joni Mitchell, Meryl Streep and Luciano Pavarotti - what a freakin' blessing that's been. Listening to her now, especially now, I remind myself of that. It helps - along with the two gin soaked olives at the bottom of my martini glass.

Joni perhaps more than any other artist has been the one "holding my hand" through all the stages of my life. I am only a little younger than she is, so this was incredibly poignant and moving to me. I am overjoyed to see her receive all this adulation -- it was a long time coming, and she was neglected and disrespected for years, so this is wonderful. There is truly no one like her. And though she is definitely a great musician of the 20th century, and not a "woman musician," there is some special connection that she makes for women, some experience that she just "gets" and expresses for us. I can describe all the different stages of my life by quoting JM songs. And she's always pushing the boundaries, changing and challenging herself, and giving us something new. And wow, to hear her sing "Both Sides Now," just amazing, so full of feeling. In a way this was like watching a trip through my own life -- but mainly I am just glad to see her finally getting the tribute that she so deserves. Wonderful.

I am a biological, cultural, and preferential male, with a strong anima. Joni Mitchell is close to my age, and has been there, lyrics and moods and explorations, inhabiting the music that plays, ceaselessly, in my head since I first heard her, what?, 50+ years ago. Her gift transcends identity and reaches into the very soul of those who will open their ears and minds and hearts to her songs. She is one the greats and I feel privileged to have witnessed her career so far.

I connected with her lyrics and her spirit in such a way that I felt seen, and spoken FOR and TO for the first time ever. She´s been like a best friend, a therapist, an adviser, a musical hero. I can totally understand Joni representing something really important to women in particular, but for me she is one of the few artist that truly shaped generations regardless of genders, nationalities, ages, you name it.

Don Katlin My pleasure. I just turned 49, am a raised on Drive In Movies (19, 18 year old parents that had me, in 1965, same year Mitchell's daughter was born, out of wedlock, surprise, both cases), and so went everywhere with those poor youngsters, i.e. remember A LOT of the sixties stuff, early 70's stuff. That said, despite my roots as to that music, all I really knew of Joni was her radio songs, one CD (not vinyl, and HITS, at that), and instinctively that she was one of the best ever. This past Easter, my instincts (mid life crisis) led me like a moth to her flame, and all her fellow freedom freak, discovery/adventuring spirit songs and interviews, I just went IN DEPTH on for the first time ever. I have been listening every day or night or both since that night (CBC interview, Joni at 70 years old started it out). She was SUCH a WONDERFUL surprise, once I dived in deep, blowing all my already suspected notions of her SKY HIGH. I love a truth teller...most do not. I love Muhammad Ali, George Carlin...masters, the best at their professions, unafraid to lay it all on the line, speak truth to power, fight for or say to folks THIS is what is going on. Joni has made tears of appreciation and etc fall multiple times since that night. I write songs myself, and while I have never been published, I can certainly appreciate the whole other level this woman is on. To me, still not having heard ALL her albums on youtube yet, I think she is THE BEST SINGER SONGWRITER EVER, period. Without doubt in Dylan's league as to literary writing, but on a higher plane as to voice and musicianship, without doubt, as well. I just LOVE this woman. No other artist has made me react so, like you speak to, so often, so many different songs, on first or repeat listens. Cannot tell you how WONDERFUL it is to discover all this, at my age and all. To me, she just joined Ali and Carlin on my own little Mount Rushmore, the Truth, Integrity, Honesty, Balls and Beauty department. PEACE, friend.

Some of my first memories as a child were the feeling of happiness that music gave me. Growing up, I had my favorite musicians, from the Beatles to Joplin, but Joni was the constant one in my life. I have always loved music. In the Fall of 1969, just 18 yrs old and living alone on my own, I heard Joni sing Marci one night on my radio. It was played on the FM station at Brown University on a nighttime program called 'Joe's World.'. Forty six years have come and gone but Marci is still my favorite song. I anxiously awaited Joni's every album and loved them each and every one. I really can't imagine what life would be like without her. I grew up naming myself a High Priest of the Joni Mitchell fan club! She will always have a very dear place in my heart. She has given us so much of herself and some of us love her dearly. Thank you Joni.

Diana Krall's piano arrangement was so thoughtful. The most gifted and accomplished musican playing that evening, Cassandra Wilson the most gifted of singers, Elton picked the song most like his own work and style. Cyndi performed the best cover. Of course Joni's work is her own best commentary and tribute.

I have loved Joni for many many years. Profoundly insightful with her lyric capacity she has managed to pinpoint the human condition like a laser aimed straight into the very core of your heart and soul. Musically, Joni's capacity to re-invent herself over the years is beyond amazing. Her visual art has known no boundaries as has her music. She has inspired me for years. I will always love her.

In this tribute concert there are some great versions of Joni's songs but when she sings in the end "Both sides now" she is really totally amazing! Joni...A high school friend who sang and played piano turned me on to you. During a "day off"" in high school, enjoying a day of "blotter", "Songs to Aging Children" touched me so transcendentally...that's the best way I can describe it. Anyway, your words have escorted me through high school and helped me through relationships in college. In a letter to a boyfriend I wrote, " We're like America and Russia, Always keeping score, We're always balancing the power, And that can get to be a cold, cold war, We're going to have to hold ourselves a peace talk, In some neutral cafe...." I've warmed my own voice up to yours and have been able to measure if I'm treating my "reed" appropriately. Thank you forever and always. Now that we are all so much older, this rendition of "Both Sides" now has proved to be timeless, and means oh so much more now because of our age. Brought me to tears.... Je vous remercie encore et encore....

Joni has enjoyed the process, which allowed her to not be swayed by the top ten charts. She brought new innovations to writing, instrumental play, melding genres and set an example for artist to explore, as she was doing, without being afraid to fail! And even though she didn't stay in the top ten...she is and will be discovered, learned from and revered for generations to come. She hit the top in her own way! And we all managed to discover her, in our own ways, and over time...many others will. I would like to say to newcomers to Joni's art🎨...ENJOY the JOURNEY! A Boomer

Oh my goodness my eyes are all wet remembering my youth on both side of the Atlantic ! Joni has brought so much to us, has lighten up life so many times, leading us through our life, teaching us the reason and price of it... I had the luck of seeing her singing only once in 79 at the Greek Theatre in LA, it was such a beautifull evening of late june in the Holywood hills and it still is such a vivid memory. Anyway this is an awesome tribut for her, so simple, sincere and genuine, that fits her so well and perfomed by great artists. Anyway my heart is overflowing of pure warmth and confidenceon this sunny monday morning, here in South of France. I must say that if there is one or two performing here that for me are top it is the great K.D. Lang version of "Help Me" (my heart is falling...) and the very moving "Circle Game". Apart from this, may I modestly congratulate all the Americans that have voted and voted so well since it's been such a joice this yesterday's Sunday morning when we finally learnt who was going to be your next President... There's numerous of us here in France and all over Europe who have felt so happy and somehow released from this much too long, gross and aweful four years "interlude". Real America is back, back in quite a beautiful and hopeful way with Joe B. and the stunning Kamala H, first woman ever being elected as vice president. May them be blessed, may the US and all of its people as well. You guys and your beautiful real culture are in my heart. Cheers, and respect from me and from South of France, a simple frog around (I did opened a bottle of Champagne too yesterday... Vive les US of A and Vive la France ;-) !)
