About 50 years ago a group of friends and I went to Phil's Pancake and Steak House at the Glenmore Shopping Centre on McLeod Trail in Calgary on a Friday night. There was a shy young girl (a student at Mount Royal College) by the name of Joan Anderson who was the entertainer for the night. She mesmerized us all - a half century later and she still has that effect on me.

Joni is a free spirit who is somewhat scary, she has no barriers no set place that she calls home, not physically but in her music and her art, she represents an ideal of fearless honesty, she seeks the real truth of what an individual is, this takes real courage, that’s my impression, a real warrior, an iron fist in a velvet glove. The iron fist for hypocrisy, the velvet glove for who and what she loves.

The way Joni can do what she does vocally while at the same time doing what she does on guitar still boggles my mind to this day!!!:)

Wow, The best ever. What a show. I remember going into tower records on Kensington High Street the day Turbulent Indigo when I was at college. It was the first album she had released since I had gotten into her. I had already bought most her albums and locked myself in my room and lapped them up. She will always be the best.

More or less a brilliant poetry slam with music to accompany it. This isn't music as we normally see it, it's free-form, no constant rhythm or signature. Amazing. She's giving a lot here, so much of herself, I've never seen anything like it.

Watch the opening number twice. The first time enjoy the lyric, the second time watch the dancing right hand of Joni as she makes her guitar ring. Another worthwhile side trip would be the article on Chum City building (wikipedia) to read about how the facility was designed for innovative TV production. Keeping in mind that this video is twenty years old the place where she recorded the show is amazing for its time.

I was in high school when this album finally came out. I had been tracking Joni's songs through other performer's albums, e.g., Ian and Sylvia, Tom Rush, Buffy Sainte Marie. She had a profound impact on me, the way I write, and the way I listen. I've been playing Marcie for most 50 years, and never have grown tired of it.

I worked for a retail music company back in the early 90's and I picked up a copy of 'Night Ride Home' and I remember being shocked when I heard how much Joni's voice had changed since her early albums and even the stuff from the late 70's. I really didn't follow her career in the 80's but that's when I started collecting her albums, eventually owning her first eight studio albums which I still have and still listen to, great stuff. It's sad that she is 69 now and can't sing at all. :(

Hey, what would I know? There is that 48 years I have been performing live music, in which I have heard quite a few of my original peers lose a lot of their vocal qualities. But my experience has been if they don't smoke, or haven't in many years, and also haven't had drug or drink abuse issues, they still sing reasonably well. And they sure didn't or don't sound as smoky as Joni did by age 50 or 60. For well-known examples of those who lived healthy, listen to Tony Bennett, age 60 (about 1986!), he sound totally in his prime, albeit just a little darker voiced than at age 30. Or Barbara Streisand at 60. Very close to her prime voice. Now I have personally paid for about 15 Joni albums, about 6 Tony Bennett albums, and my wife bought exactly one Barbara album, so I am not comparing my enjoyment of their artistry, especially Barbara's, to the amazing Joni Mitchell. But to me she does sound like the heavy smoker I have personally observed her to be.
