When Empire Strikes Back debuted in theaters, I was seven years old. It was the first movie that I saw in an indoor theater with Dolby Stereo so it was a vast improvement sound-wise from the first Star Wars movie which I saw at a drive-in theater and had to listen to through that cool looking, but awful sounding chrome speaker that hung on a pole next to your car. I had vision problems that made the world blurry and double from the time I was born until I did a series of eye exercises starting when I was 8 years old, so my first experiences with Star Wars movies were more about the sound than the visuals. Hearing the Star Wars music, special effects, character voices etc. much more clearly for the first time made ESB so special! It's probably the first reason why ESB is still my favorite Star Wars movie before I fully understood what all was going on when I watched the trilogy later on when we got a VCR. That was mind blowing because although our TV screen was only 27 inches diagonal and didn't have the booming speakers of the theaters, I was finally able to see all three movies without things looking blurry or in double vision as long as I concentrated on the TV screen hard enough. I'd watch those movies when I was alone in the house and crank that TV's poor speakers as loud as they would go. They were the first VHS tapes my mom bought after we got the VCR and were the most frequently played. I still have them in their sleeves, but the tapes are worn out. Before the VHS tapes came out, the main way I re-lived Star Wars was through listening to the soundtrack on our record player while playing with my action figures and vehicles. Those toys were very special to me because I could see them better up close, feel the textures of them, move them around and create my own scenes based on my imagination's own version of what I'd mostly only heard in the theaters. When the ESB toys came out, I was right in the prime of my fascination with playing with the toys, so I got more of those figures and vehicles than I did of Star Wars or Return of the Jedi for birthdays, rewards for hard work, and Christmases. I love all the lines of Star Wars toys, but the Kenner ESB line is tops for me. Not just the memories, but also the look of them. ROTJ toys are Kenner's pinnacle in terms of build quality and design, but they had made great progress on the ESB toys. It's also when I got my crown jewels of my collection to this day: The Millenium Falcon and the AT-AT. What a time to be a kid! Great video! I always enjoy reading your comments John! You and I share similar backgrounds when it comes to how we experienced Star Wars outside of the theater, my interaction wouid be with the read along Cassettes like you had with the albums. I wood listen to those and then play with the figures to relive the action :). We lived in a great time that pushed our imaginations in different ways that kids experience now. Is that better? Idk but it made our generation who we are today, I suppose. Again thanks for your insights and commentary. Comment of the week right here.

This video was fun for me. When I started to 'collect' SW as an adult, my first target was Empire figures. Luckily for me, It was mid-90s and not today!

The ESB figures are my favorite as well, mostly because I remember walking through the toy isles seeing the ESB logos on everything! You started collecting at the RIGHT time in the 90s. Several years back, I got a bag of seven complete vintage figures from my dealer, most of them from ESB: Yoda, Bespin Luke, Bespin Leia, Lando, Ugnaught, Klaatu, and Endor Han. All complete, all in mint or near mint condition. We are going through bunch of SW figures and he held held up a bag of figures and he said, "Pick out which ones you want." and I said, "What do you want for the whole bag?" :) He thought for a second and came up with a number. I paid $100 for that bag. I fed it into my Batcomputer and it comes out to approximately $14.28 each.

🙌 This is my most favorite figure line. I put a "12 back" type set together beginning with Boba Fett and ending with Yoda. That's great you saved your own Hoth snowtrooper, it's in Mint condition👌 You should AFA that one brother 😉✊ Find another for your display case. Bossk there's light brown and a dark greenish brown actually, but AFA only notes flat or gloss paint. Flat brown is the original 1st release. Bespin Guard has short, curved, and square mustache 😂 Most of the 41 back-A releases had a different version, then starting with 41-B they were changed to what's more of the regular common one's. Loved this episode ✊😎👊

A fun review over the ESB figures in your collection. Honestly some of my favorite figures are from this release. I appreciate all the added details about what card back these were first released on and going over the accessories that came with the figures. As well as seeing what you had to shell out to put these in your collection. So much vintage Kenner to enjoy! Already looking forward to your ROTJ figure collection re-review Joey.

The FX-7 figure is the only vintage figure in the entire collection that does not have holes on the bottom for foot pegs. Yoda actually came out in July 1980, but was later counted as wave 2. He was planned in the 1980 wave but held back for obvious reasons as to not ruin his surprise appearance.

Hey Richard! You are correct! There are some other figures that were moulded without foot holes, but those are variants. One of those was the Japanese Stormtrooper Takara figure.

I thought the pale Yoda with orange snake was more valuable, because it came out first. Each year Yoda got darker between 1980 and 85. One thing that always bothered me about the figure was the the lamp on Yoda's belt. I'd like to have the Yoda with the Pac-Man eyes and brown snake. :) I'm glad you put this video up, because I was putting the black blaster with Bespin Luke in the blue blaster with Endor Han. Great vid. I’ve been collecting Star Wars figures for about 4 years now. I’ve just about completed my Last 17 collection, which was pretty expensive but nonetheless a good investment and they are nice figures. I only need to find a decent 1977 R2D2. The R2 figures are usually more pricey than most other figures, so I imagine that R2 is a popular figure. I have about 30 figures from my childhood in my collection and I’ve also included Max Rebos band. Hopefully I will nab a nice Blue Snaggletooth for Christmas. How long have you been collecting these figures? I love the nostalgia buzz I get from these awesome vintage toys.

Hey flavco! I have only been a serious collector for just over two years, but in that time I have devoted myself to this hobby and researching the figures. It’s been so much fun. When you buy an R2 the main th BTS that will drive up price is finding an immaculate version. So sticker is white, with no rips, dome is clear, figure plastic is white, and no point missing from the eyes. The more damage to these, the lower the price, so make sure you are looking at what great examples of these are selling for. There are a TON of sellers trying to use the high market prices for non Mint figures.

I would heavily favor Facebook groups that favor vintage Star Wars. The imperial Commissary, The Vintage Alliance, Echo Base, and Orange Droid Vintage Toys are Among some I go to.

@@thepadawancollectorofficial after commenting I realised that maybe mine were different as they were done by Palitoy in the UK. I don’t know if they were significantly different in any way but I feel like the paint jobs and material cuts were more consistent than some of the figures I saw in the vid. Probably just my memory lying to me again.
