I have only recently found your channel but you inspire me to read more. Im also trying to get a literature degree started so that i can effectively write my own novel. I'm 35 so dont feel too bad about being old in your classes lol. We're all on pur own path.

i had to read “out” for a class in college. i was so enthralled that i didn’t put it down until i was done. i had a “oh shit i forgot to eat” moment. it was very disheartening and sometimes hard to read because of the graphic nature and very real issues it presents, but i think that’s what makes it so good. it’s one of the few novels from college i’ve held onto.

I read Our Wives Under the Sea earlier this year and I also really enjoyed it. Julia Armfield has incredible skill writing unsettling, looming horror without it ever being gruesome. And I still can’t believe it was her debut novel! My main complaint with many debut novelists is their metaphors are about as subtle as of a ton of bricks. Armfield’s were quite deft and effective, in my opinion. Spoilers ahead for anyone who cares: The unspoken terror and dread of the submarine scenes haunt me to this day. I remember feeling this prickling coldness during each of Leah’s chapters (then again I have an abiding fear of the ocean so maybe that’s why it scared me so much lol) I often gravitate to stories about grief, so the ambiguous ending was perfect to me. I don’t think there’s one correct answer but my personal interpretation is that Leah never actually came back. Her return and metamorphosis was a reflection of Miri’s mind processing the grief of losing her wife. In the end, when she takes Leah to the shore and she dissolves into salt water, it’s Miri reaching the final stage of grief. She finally accepts the Leah she knew and loved, as imperfect as their relationship was, is gone. She became a part of the sea. PS Julia Armfield’s second novel came out recently, titled Private Rites. It features many similar themes - Julia loves her water based metaphors - and I felt very connected to each of the characters, even if I didn’t agree with their actions all the time. imo the metaphorical interludes and the ending weren’t quite as sharp as our wives under the sea, but it was still an enjoyable read overall.

i love the secret history, it's my favorite book, but i honestly don't know if you would like it😭😭it's very tedious and the way donna tartt writes is very 'run on sentences'(which i love but it can lead to paragraphs or sections that could've been left out with little to no change to the story as a whole)

Through your recs I've gotten quite close to splatterpunk books and I'm redisturbed again! Oh boy! Thanks! Excited to read Monstrolio & Our Wives Under the Sea~! Unsure but intrigued by Tell Me I'm Worthless and A Touch of Jen...! Will I really read Tender is the Flesh...? Hmm... Shoutout to Tampa bringing me to your channel, it's been lovely! thank you for making these videos! theyre great wfh-companionship and your selections are v refreshing! i thought you might be interested in reading a bit more about charlotte perkins gilman for context (esp the article 'the trouble with charlotte perkins gilman' by halle butler in the paris review) - i think a lot of folks dont know about the other things shes written and i def understand ppls feelings about/interpretations of the yellow wallpaper, but her political views are worth knowing about imo! its actually interesting how absent those views are from the yellow wallpaper specifically lol looking forward to more of your vids 🫡

I am so curious how you would feel about Catherynne M. Valente's work. Her writing is flowery, and definitely poetic, but ultimately charming as it serves her post-modern, fairytale-esque stories. I started with Palimpsest, a book I loved, but I would recommend Comfort Me With Apples, one of her novellas, as a starting point. There was a reason I meant to recommend it via comment ages ago, but cannot remember why I hadn't. Either way, I think you might be interested!

Heaven did have more of a plot than her other novels imo, it was my first Kawakami novel and it touched me in such an indescribable way. It's a quiet and subtle book but something that stays with u. Can't decide which of her books is my fav tho (its so hard to choose).
