Wow, some of the salaries are pretty good. I have worked 40 years and am a licensed professional. I have often worked two jobs in my life, working at least as long hours as the cruise ship staff when you consider everything but never have had $4000 left over after my taxes and living expenses. They certainly earn every penny and are mostly happy. As one crew member was telling me, he earns five times the salary he can back home and is doing less work. His salary supports his family along with three other families back home. God bless them for all they do!

The lower paid salaries are bad enough. But when you consider the huge amount of hours many of them work (60-70 hours/week as I understand)? The pay these people get - even with free room/board/travel - is just horrible. May the day soon come when no one in the world is so desperate that they will put up with this wage slavery. ​@@DeathNikkii I was speaking for myself. It's my opinion. These cruise ships are not owned/operated out of these poor countries. They are primarily catering to Western passengers. And they are owned by Western corporations. Yet they pay many of their workers what amounts to illegal wages in these Western nations. If a company is owned/run out of the West? Than they should pay their workers at least the hourly minimum wages that are in their home, Western nations. And if by doing so means they cannot make as much money? Tough. You don't agree? So be it. ☮

@@McRocket You completely don't understand how cost of living works. There's a reason why someone making $100k in Oklahoma is better off financially than someone making $200k in San Francisco. These companies break even on the cruise tickets and make their money off the alcohol and other crap they push on you. If we had it your way, cruises would only be for the rich. Many of these workers consider a job like this akin to winning the lottery if they can get in, they make double what a registered nurse does in the Philipines. And this is before counting all the tips they get and the free room / board which further increases their take home pay. A cruise steward can make 3-4 times what a 4-year educated nurse does. I'm guessing you have a white saviour complex. Hopefully you don't have any authority because people like you ruin it for every one else. If you want a cruise ship with all American staff, go on the NCL Pride of America and you'll soon realize how poor the service is.

@@McRocket The minimum wage varies state by state depending on the cost of living in that state. They don't live a western life style, it's all on the ship with board and meals provided. See it's people like you that don't understand the scope of an industry and will cause its downfall if you had your way. You think you're helping those workers, but they'll be cursing you because you caused them to lose their well paying job. Well intentions don't fill people's stomachs.

I was a party/dance band musician on ships and we averaged about $1000 Canadian a week. BUT we were ‘independent contractors’ and it was tax-free income (earned on international waters) and all expenses were paid by the company. As for the negative comments on the low-income in some positions, I used to feel the same-that workers were being exploited-until I talked to some of them. They were more than happy to have the job and be making the money they were, as when they went home and exchanged the strong USD currency, they made out well. Also, as pointed out, they got the experience of travelling the road. And while I do agree that the companies could/should pay more, it’s not my call to make. And btw, the reason they are able to pay such low wages is because the companies, while mostly being American, register the individual ships in counties with lax labour laws-countries that legally allow them to pay staff below minimum wage. That’s why you’ll see a RCCL ship with a life preserver tag that says ‘….of the Seas-Bahamas’ painted on it. Also, according to nautical and maritime law, salary dictates rank-and rank dictates what type of an in you get.

Considering most live in non dollar countries, this much income seems quite adequate. Add in free room and board, it' s is pretty good. I won't worry about tipping extra unless I get really personal and exceptional service, like I did recently in the main dinning room on Princess Regal.

Yeah, less than $200 a week for some of these positions is completely adequate….especially for 12-16 hour days without a break. Get out of here

Most are accurate, but some still higher than reality. Like Photo we had $850 (3rd Phtg) to $1100 (1st Phtg) + commission, which can be very low if you have not a good itinerary (like a winter season on Med with an average guest age of 70+, mostly Germans - this leads to a full ZERO commission guaranteed). The total average was usually less than $1500 for a 3rd Phtg. But generally speaking, it's a fairly accurate compilation, much better than others you can find on youtube. Good job!

Also to add there is a tip pool so what they get is more than what is shown. If the cost of cruises has to go up because their salaries go up then of course cruisers will pay a lot more. Right now, I think they’re doing pretty good. Don’t forget these are prized jobs for many countries. There has to be a reason.B

wrong for all engine officers, should be much higher sallaries and captains doesnt have that much bigger salary than cheif engineer its like 10- 15 percent different.you can see that "captain leo" made the video and made deck officers have much higher salaries than the engine department and the rest to look more important.

Don’t forget a few things. It may seem low and in some cases it is but first of all, there are no expenses. Secondly, at see as I have talked to several crewmembers about this there are no taxes. And don’t forget many people working on the ships come from Third World countries where that amount of money means a lot more than it does here. I sent my brother-in-law in India $100 per month and he actually does OK with that. There are some cases where people listed in this salary range are making 70 or $80,000 per year and again no taxes and no expenses. That’s better than people making that much money in the United States have to pay taxes and have to have a multitude of expenses.

This does not mention the salaries of first engineers staff chief engineer. The salary that you mentioned for chief engineer is I thing what first engineers get . The staff chief engineers get much more and chief engineers get almost equal to masters

Im about to apply for a Princess Cruises, but there is one little problem. Im in touch with agency and they told me the salary for bar steward is 700$ ?! + percent on beverage sold. They didnt tell me exactly how much percent is it and how much could it be on monthly base, and do we all in bar deparment share that percent or its individual. So this lack of knowladge is only barrier i have before applying. Please somebody tell me more how is it work in bar department since my agency treat my like its my 2nd contract not first.

About me I am 3rd officer with Indian COC in a container ship, looking to switch to cruise. 1- salary 2- contract duration and type, weather it's on roll or on contract basis. 3- is insurance being provided 4- internet on board 5- other than navigation and Lsa/Ffa maintenance, any other duties are included in 3rd officers profile. true to a certain degree, but if your from certain countries you don't pay any taxes, your gross is your net. And of course you have very little living expenses, no rent, travel, food, bills etc etc, you can save a much higher % of your salary unlike other jobs, and if you crash at your friends or family when off work or between contracts, you can save a tonne without having to pay rent/mortgage run a car etc (if your single with no family) And if your from developing countries the salaries are great, which is why alot of Indians Filipinos, south east asian eastern europeans from Romania/Bulgaria work in the cruise industry, $1500-2000 might not seem alot to an American or Aussie or Brit, but for these people it's a fortune
