Super random and I’m sure you probably already know... but I think you can have beavers “rehomed”... I watched a documentary on pbs (I think) where they take beavers from places where they’re causing floods and take them to places where there is drought and the beavs do their thing and re-route water and save the day. It’s called Leave it to Beavers. This may be the only time in my life I get to use this beaver knowledge so let me have this please😂😅

This is going to be so fun! You should contact the local woodland preservation groups and see if they can give you advice about re-wilding the area, you could have this really lush, beautiful forest bustling with life! And I bet that soil is super nutrient dense from the flooding, you could definitely mix it in with your gardening soil and have amazing plant growth! So much exciting stuff! My dad and I built these raised boxes for our veg, they're still connected to the ground so the plants can go as deep as they want but it's easier on dads back and helps protect against animals

Beaver dams do so much good for the environment! It provides housing for other keystone species, recharge groundwater, and control flooding! They're an important species. Maybe instead you can dig a trough to widen the river so that marsh can drain with the rest of the river. I'd also look into permaculture to work with nature rather than against it. Good lucl!

The boardwalk idea is amazing! Wetlands are such awesome, biodiverse environments, but they are also so fragile. A boardwalk would be the perfect way to minimize disturbance of the ecology while still enjoying the beauty of it! Maybe do more research before destroying the beaver dam, though? Beavers are a keystone species and create habitat for sooooo many other creatures and plants (like those ducks!). It'd be a shame to displace them all. P.S. from a professional veggie farmer, there is no such thing as too much light for a greenhouse :) I'm so excited to see all that you do on your land, thank you so much for sharing!

Hi, maybe you know about this already but! I moved to a new house where the entire yard was super uneven. We drove a truck to a pebble/stone/mining mill place. They asked if we wanted a half truck bed, or a full truck bed. We filled the entire bed of the truck with dirt, drove the truck onto the yard, pushed the dirt off where it needed to go. You'll need to plant grass seed afterwards, but it's all relatively cheap if you do it yourself. $30 USD for a full truck bed of dirt. You could also get pebbles or whatever you need. Also I recommend cleaning out the truck bed of any stuff, and laying down a tarp before you fill it! You can lift the tarp from the front and move the dirt towards the back. Also leaves your truck bed clean 😁

Awesome property! This east coast winter was unusually mild, so don't be deceived. Don't put chickens too far from your house. Imagine waking up to 5 foot drifts of snow against your house and then having to plow through that to feed your chickens after a winter storm. Just google "white juan". I've seen quite a few almost as bad as that in the last 10 years. Also if you are far from a city, if you don't have a generator, you should invest, because I've seen power knocked out for a week in parts of the maritimes. Fall 2019 ours was out for a week after tropical storm Dorian. Love the house content!

I think the "swampy" part of your yard (at least the part closest to the house) would definitely benefit of some drainage canals that lead the water back to the river from the lower laying land. That way you at least have a bit more area to use, until the beavers decide to build their dam in a different spot

Hey! Advice from long-time chicken owner! Since you live in a pretty rural area, I'm going to guess you're going to have issues with predators, much like my family does. Our biggest issue is raccoons and hawks. You can solve these issues by having a small, tightly enclosed house that has no openings where you lock them up at night, and it would also be convenient to attach your egg boxes to this structure. And during the day when they're running around in the larger area for scratching and whatnot, a simple netting over the top (metal, string, plastic, whatever) will be enough to deter any flying predators. Also never feed chickens citrus, or onions, it'll make them stop laying for a few days. They ARE cannibals so you can feed them chicken, if you want to. Contact me if you want more tips, I've got loads!

Hi Ariel! Check with someone who is more of an expert than me, but it seems to me that you can make your deck as deep as you want. I don't see why you couldn't put additional deck footings past the pipes, run the structural beams from the footings closer to your house to the footings past the pipes, and then add your deck wood on top of the structural beams. I'd build a hatch in your deck so you can access the cleanout point for your pipes. It seems like that should work just fine but obviously consult with an expert. I love your enthusiasm for everything you do. Can't wait to keep watching! :)

I've got a beaver dam and a swamp on my land, too. At first, being from Toronto (we also moved to the middle of nowhere), my husband and I thought it was amazing and fairytale-y, but it's not-they flood acres so much faster than you'd believe! Since yours is so close to your house and immediate yard, you should probably get your beavers removed and that dam torn down as soon as you can. In a single season, my beavers flooded 200 feet of my trail and cut off access to a whole 40 acres of property -.-

Decades ago, my aunt wanted a small writing studio on her cottage property, since the cottage was always full of relatives on vacation. Her son went way over the top and built her a geodesic dome - one of the few that still remain standing in Canada, I believe. Ultimately, it became overflow for visiting relatives. So you will be well off to keep the writing gazebo project modest.

Check with your local authority about the bridge crossing before you start...here in BC you need a permit from the Province before constructing over watercourses! Just making sure you don't get any flack!! All your projects sound great, can wait to see them become a reality for you!

the little bridge would be beautiful; the beavers; contact the ministry of wildlife, they may be able to catch and relocate for you. The garden is a really great idea also.

Great plans!! It would be on my list to relocate these beavers. The flooding is really destructive for your property. Watch out for beaver fever too! There's a lot of to do's for this backyard but when it's done it will look spectacular!!

Put in a couple plants right away that take a few years to produce....raspberries, asparagus, a fruit tree? It’s just wonderful there in your dream.
