TRANSCRIPT:
You know conditionals are important, but every time you learn them, it's so complicated, right? Well, I don't understand why. English conditionals are really not that difficult. So I'm going to explain to you very, very simply how and when to use the zero, first, second, third, and mixed conditionals in English. And you're going to see that English conditionals are really not that scary.
Okay, listen carefully because this definition of a conditional sentence is really going to help you for the whole of the rest of the lesson. Okay, a conditional sentence is basically two parts to a sentence. Part one starts with the word if, and this is the condition. Like, if this happens, then the second part of the sentence is the result. The result, if that condition is true. So if this happens, that happens. If ... Okay? And we can change the order of this so we can say ... If ... It doesn't matter which order we put them in.
But you must really make a division between the two parts of the sentence if + condition | result. Okay, have you got that? Because the zero, first, second, and third conditionals all have that in common, that is the structure of a conditional sentence. And the only reason we have a zero, first, second, and third conditionals all have that in common. That is the structure of a conditional sentence. And the only reason we have a zero, first, second, and third conditional are to talk about different tenses of that condition.
So let's have a look at these conditionals starting with the zero conditional, and you can download a summary of all the conditionals, including the examples and even a test to test your knowledge of the conditionals in English by downloading that PDF, which is free. And there's a link to that in the description. Okay, let's get going.
Okay, so as I mentioned, we have two parts to the sentence, if plus the condition and the result. With the zero conditional, they both need to be in the present simple. Both of these parts of the sentence need to be in the present simple. And we use this zero conditional to talk about facts, things that happen all the time or scientific facts. So for example, if water reaches zero degrees, it freezes. Or, water freezes if it reaches zero degrees.
We can also use the word when in the zero conditional instead of the word if. So we can say, if you heat ice, it melts. Or when you heat ice, it melts. Or changing the order, ice heats when you melt it. It's hot when the sun shines. Questions in the zero conditional normally start with do or does, a question, and we normally put the if part, the condition at the end of the sentence. Does metal melt when you heat it? Does rain turn to snow if it's 3 degrees Celsius? So quite simply, if you're talking about facts or things that always happen, use the zero conditional. Easy.
Of course, we have two parts to the first conditional. The part with if, the condition, must be in the present simple tense, and the result must be in the future with will. For example, if you subscribe to the channel, you will get new lessons from me every Friday. It's true. And again, the order of this is not important. We can say, I will call you if I hear any news, or if I hear any news, I will call you.

I'm not sure if memorizing incorrrect phrases to learn what the correct ones should be is a good idea. You'll forget the rhyme word, and the intent will be lost soon after, but the structure will stick. When in doubt, I always reach for a few correct examples I remembered ("If it rains tomorrow, we'll get wet" or woman singing "If I were a boy..." etc.), and never for wrong ones.

Even the mixed conditionals are kind of confusing, but sometimes I know how to use them in a sentence (depends of the situation). The only way to easily understand the grammar is by using them in a sentence and when we're speaking.

Here is a sample from the book 'Sir Nigel' by Arthur Conan Doyle: Black Simon’s dark face was shining with a fierce joy. “Fair sir, I will ever be your debtor if you will let me go." Here is another example from this book: “Simon,” said Aylward, “the light is not overgood and the place is cramped for sword-play, but if you will step out into the open I will teach you whether my master is a true soldier or not.”

I think these example sentences fall into the "exceptions to the general rule" category; "will" is permitted in the if-clause when it's being used as a modal verb (rather than auxiliary) to politely express willingness or wish: "I will warm some water for tea, if you WILL excuse me." Another exception is when the action in the if-or-when clause takes place AFTER the action in the main clause: "If aspirin will ease my headache, I will take a couple tonight."

I just had a chance to watch this incredibly vital video. However, what caught my attention the most, even more than learning about all types of the complicated MIXED conditionals, was the example sentence given by Mr. Greg when explaining the SECOND conditionals. I've always taught my students this sentence in the following order: If you heat ice, it melts. Or Ice melts, if you heat it. Still, we can't say for sure that what the teacher said here is not correct. I mean, at the end of the day, he is the Native teacher, not us. I hope Mr. Greg will elaborate on this. PS Great video.

@@anacee Thank you for explaining. I sent my example, as shown in my original comment, to my English advisor and she agrees that it is correct. It displays future tense (“If I go to the concert - some time in the future - I could (conditionally) have fun”. She has been educated in English language studies at Oxford in the UK, so I tend to trust her. I will do some more investigation into your assertion. Perhaps there are just semantic differences but I thought it worth responding because your comment was rather dogmatic and not entirely accurate as far as what I have learned. I would never use “will” in the “if” clause, but there are other means of indicating future tense. Anyway, Thanks again!
