Adam Nevill has a real flair for creature design. The creatures in The Ritual and No One Gets Out Alive have really crazy designs that definitely made me think "wow, I've never seen that before."

Wonderful book. Not a sweeping thriller, but a concise, immediate horror story. With just that the book is good. What makes it great is the obvious intelligence and care put into the writing. Every sentence, phrase, undoubtedly every word given expert care and consideration. How so many other books get published with mediocre grammar and style is a frustrating reality. This is a 336 page master class.

I also have become a tremendous fan of Adam Nevill’s work over the past few years. After reading All the Fiends of Hell I immediately read Cunning Folk and The Vessel, both full of Nevill’s character based, lush description which captures an inner mood while also evoking a picturesque visual landscape. He’s gifted. However, my initial attraction to him was his short stories. Particularly the urban stories. At that time I thought nobody does urban horror as well as him. I recommend Hasty for the Dark, Wyrd and Other Derelictions, and my favorite, Some Will Not Sleep, which is narrated by friend of mine, David Stifel, for Audible. My fondness for his urban horror is a little ironic since he’s known primarily for his wilderness horror, The Ritual.

@@CriminOllyBlog If you want to read a set of short stories that are really different, but very interesting, try Wyrd and Other Derelictions. Nevill guides us through the settings of hideous crimes and supernatural terror after the action has taken place. The stories leave you feeling horrified and helpless, and they are brilliant. But you won't be disappointed with his other short stories.

I read this after seeing you mention it in your July wrap up video. The relationship between Karl (or Jake?) and the kids was lovely at times and a nice bit of brief relief from the tension of the journey they were on. The horrors were just that... horrific! Definitely an author that's on my radar now, thanks to you!

I’ve just finished this book and it’s my first Adam Nevill story. I loved it. I got Day of the triffids vibes at the beginning, which is a massive compliment. Karl was a great character that screamed normal in the best ways. I would have liked a bit more time to let my hatred for Bob build, he went from annoying knobhead to evil child snatcher pretty damn quick. Overall, great read.

@@arlem525 I finished this audiobook about 3 weeks ago. I thought it was incredibly well produced. First of all the casting is perfect. Kris Dyer, the reader, has an excellent beta-male softness but strong moral compass which means that his character arc is to become stronger in his own skin, rather than redeeming a moral failure. Dyer captures this mood and feeling. I strongly recommend this audiobook.

I liked Cunning Folk, really _didn't_ like The Reddening, and I wanted to love Apartment 16 (which I read last week), but couldn't help thinking it would have been better if it was about 100 pages shorter.
