I would love to see a video on your tips for people who are thinking of upgrading their Mac gear (I.E. RAM chips, hard drives, processors etc.). Would love to get your take on that, and maybe what you think about Apple making components soldered on to the motherboard, rather than interchangeable like the older macs!

I've seen many tutorials on mastering and some of them say to hipass your entire track below 20hz or even 30hz. They're mostly EDM Mastering tutorials. They say that "you don't need those and you have to do this in order to get more loudness onto your track. Those frequencies are useless unless you're playing your track on a big system." Should I hipass my track up to 20hz to gain loudness?? I've seen some big Producer in the EDM community doing this, and I didn't know they did this until I watched a video about it.

VLC is really great. This afternoon I found out it can play C64 sid files which I didn’t expect it could. I mostly use it as video player though. It seems to support almost any type of audio/video file even really obscure obsolete ones as long as you’ve got a codec installed for it. A lesser known feature is it’s ability to transcode video’s but it’s but user unfriendly for that, prefer to do that with Handbrake.

Questions for you about Mariska: Is she learning substantive aspects of your business from you as well (audio engineering, mixing, mastering) or mainly administrative things? Does she work full time or part time for you? Does she help with recording and editing your videos? Thanks, Wytse.
@Whiteseastudio3 жыл бұрын
She's purely doing administrative things, but I had to learn her a few things about the basic engineering to fully understand the company. She works part-time for me, she can schedule her own hours however fits...

One question comes to mind.... is the external USB SSD fast enough when working with projects and samples or is that primarily for client stuff? So we are not talking about big projects but just some wave files? Btw. I switched from Notion to Coda but with the same idea to have one database for all production stuff. I used to do a lot in a spreadsheet (as probably many do) but these tools are better. Instead of Things, I use Todoist, as a quick task manager. I'm surprised you don't use Evernote/Nimbus for invoices, client documents, manuals etc. or is it all in Dropbox?

Of course you should do whatever suits your workflow. I've used mac for years and loved using logic pro. Eventually there was a time my mac couldn't handle what I was doing with it anymore and got a pc. Forcibly switched over to reaper, which I love using now. But damn, if I had a mac I would surely only be buying it use logic on it. So it's strange to see you being a reaper user on a mac :p. Especially limiting yourself with a M1 processor honestly.

Only disagreement I have is the concept that we should throw away apps that are not supported on M1 since we'll end up throwing them away anyway. It can be an uphill battle, but I think decisions about which apps or plugins to use should be 100% based on workflow enjoyment and satisfaction with the results- not the architecture. If you love some older apps and find they let you get 4-5 times as much done, you can probably find a wrapper or emulator that will keep them alive. For a plugin example, when Logic Pro went 64 bit only, I had to use 32 Lives for probably 50% of my plugins for the first two years. Then once the developers finally caught up and made 64 bit versions, I hadn't forgotten about the plugins I really liked, and was able to have the best of both worlds.

My Reaper plugin list is so full of stuff I don't use, don't know how to use (yet) or haven't got around to trying and stuff I don't even know what it is. I may use 1% of the plugins I have. Thing is that I just mess around with music for fun during periods of horrible weather but I'm a sucker for free plugin's and IR's. I guess if it ever becomes perpetual winter with no internet connection you all will know what I'll be up too, LOL. Love this video but it's lacking Sandstorm, LOL. ;)

I recommend to switch from Reaper to Pro Tools. Just some good piece of advice. Pro Tools has sansamp! I also recommend not to use Izotope if you want to be taken seriously, just another piece of good advice. Getting some plugins for free does not mean you must use them, I hope you are not forced to due to some contract or maybe you are obliged to make promo
