Drop shipping has ruined Etsy for me because they have so many shops on there saying that it’s handmade and plated gold and all these other claims but it’s just from AliExpress and they’re selling them at like 30, 40 or $50 more than what they’re costing. For jewellery especially, I only purchase from reputable places like Ana Luisa. For rings I love antiques ❤

Yep, Etsy is now a no-go for me, ESPECIALLY for jewelry. There are still genuinely handmade things there, I try to filter through the type of item and the region (like Eastern Europe for linen pieces) to try to suss out what’s legit. I recently bought a dress with custom sizing from a brand I found on Etsy, but I know that Etsy has been shady with their sellers for some time, so I ordered directly from her website instead.

I originally saw the strawberry sweater on aliexpress, which is a website known for supplying cheap products for companies to drop ship or white label. For blush dilemma, I heard a tip recently to try putting contour products on top of blush to make them more muted. I would guess eyeshadow could also be used. To get to a cooler toned blush, I’d add a tiny amount of a bluish color to a pink blush. To get to peach, you’d want to add orange. Learning color theory for mixing paint has come in handy time and time again for me.

I love the term "functional dupe". We all have our own specific tastes, and I can't tell you how many times I've been eyeing (or even buying) something and realize it's just like something else I already have. It makes sense to be drawn to similar things repeatedly, so simply looking at what you already have can be enough to make the new shiny thing less enticing. Regarding the tinted glasses for migraines...I've dealt with chronic migraines since I was a kid and I've actually tried something like this. I wasn't really impressed and what I'd recommend above that is a pair of transitions/photochromic glasses that lighten and darken with the sun. Or just carrying sunglasses with you and switching to those when you're in sunlight. I think people are kind of trying to reinvent the wheel with these other tinted glasses.
@shawnaripari8 ай бұрын
you're spot on with the functional dupes. I find this especially true for makeup for the reasons you've said. You like something so you tend to be drawn to more of the same. As for the glasses, if I ever did purchase them they'd be for indoor only and from what I can tell wearing sunglasses indoors isn't a permanent solution. I'm generally fine outdoors if I have sunglasses, but because i'm home 90% of the time, that's where most of my migraines happen
@maddie84158 ай бұрын
@@shawnaripari Yeah, I think Theraspecs and tinted glasses that are supposed to help migraines are mostly meant to mitigate florescent lighting like they have in places like schools and offices. I got them when I was working at a place with this kind of lighting and didn't notice a difference with my migraines, personally. I am generally sensitive to light, but it's more of a factor with sunlight, as I believe you were mentioning the effects of increased sun, too. If I have an active migraine pretty much any light bothers me and just putting on some sunglasses indoors actually helps me more than the Theraspecs did. If I'm in pain like that I just don't care what anyone thinks 😆.

For graphic tees, if there is one you notice is peeling or cracking and you really like it, one thing I started doing is using a thin layer fabric paint in the same color to patch it up to make the graphic last a bit longer. The color won't be as bright but fabric paint can act like glue and can still last through multiple washes.

I agree with you on finding brands/outlets that sell things I'm interested in owning but not purchasing atm. Most of the 'online shopping' I've done this year has been to find locally made, ethical clothing stores, that make & carry clothes for people with a leaner/longer body, prioritising natural fibres and overall longevity of the garment. Also, makeup-wise, I have fallen out of love with doing an obvious look. I wear sunscreen, with a layer of translucent powder over (to mattify it), sometimes a blush (I've repurchased the same one 3 times now), some mascara, always lipgloss but sometimes a lipstick too. My skin looks great, I feel more like myself. So, nothing else appeals to me anymore, and I like that. Excellent video! :)

Canadian from Ottawa here. I was hugely influenced to buy Province of Canada for the same reasons you were, they felt like a sustainable version of Roots. I finally bit the bullet and actually PAID for shipping (if you can imagine that lol) to try their products with a pair of classic cottage cabin socks. While I saw in their listing it’s not all wool it lost its shape every wear to run half down my feet. I kept on having to take off my boots to adjust. It turned me off of their products forever. The equivalent from Simons is all wool, cheaper, lasts “forever”, fits well without shrinking after wash and having to be stretched out like typical wool.

noooooo I hate to hear that you had such a bad experience. Simons is an interesting case because I have found some good brands on there. Some sustainable and/or canadian brands. Even when that's not the case you STILL raise the point that sustainable brands don't inherently = better

I had 7 items in my World Market basket trying to check out. The system indicated there was a problem with one of my items but did not specify which item. All looked good in my cart. I would have had to call to find out what was wrong. Sometimes the universe gives you a sign and this was one. I left the site. No more waiting on websites. So, did I need any of those items? No. Two were for gifts but easy come, easy go. There will be other opportunities before Christmas for unique gifts. So much easier now to walk away. Re: blush, for most of my life I had one blush. When that was gone I replaced it. That’s how far we have all gone down the road of excess without even realizing it. Back when we had 2 young children and I was a stay at home mom (those moms are also working all day every day for their home and family - no shame) I only wore a dress once a week to church so I only had one dress and I wore it every Sunday for three years. I finally got a new dress and it was exciting to me. The hubs went with me - that never happens - and it is still a nice memory 50 years later. There are no events like that when you live with excess clothing. You are more likely to have decision fatigue and end up hating everything you have and wanting more. It’s been a long time since we lived that way but it was better and definitely more satisfying. We had some financial goals and a lot of pressing necessities. Self-discipline has gone by the wayside and I strive now to get back to that way of living. It’s not that we are unhappy now. We were happy then and happy now but there is now a drive to do better. My children will have to dispose of our things in the not too distant future, given our ages, and I would like the flotsam and jetsam of our lives to be gone so they can just divide up the good things that they want and get rid of the rest. I write this as a caution to those of you who are younger to live more simply with the things that bring you joy. Then the purchases of what you need and make your life better will be satisfying. Not to say that material possessions can make you happy if you are not content inside. Craving more and more is doing business with an insatiable monster. It leaves you feeling empty very soon. Well, my rant is over, go in peace. 😂😊

Just a heads up re: k-beauty sunscreen-sometimes (not always) it can take a while to ship. I’ve had to buy something less than ideal in person because my order took 4+ weeks to arrive. Also, creating a savings plan now (even $5-10 a month if you have any money coming, increasing as your income increases) will help build that muscle and shift some of the dopamine hit from spending your watching that money grow. And when you have an opportunity to start a retirement fund, use that same approach with keeping up with a minimum contribution so that temporary/immediate expenses don’t steal from your future self. It’s challenging to learn this on your own but I have full faith in you!

I had a father with a gambling problem and a mother who was a saver extraordinaire. The best thing I've learned is to buy classics that are the best I can afford and learn to take care of them. (Our last car lasted nearly 20 years.) The worst has been spending money is BAAAD, so I wait too long to buy something I really need, but now it's gone, and I just have to take whatever I can get, at whatever price. My mother used to tell me, when I wanted something she didn't think was necessary that when I made my own money, I could buy nice things for myself. And now that I'm there, I have no practice in actually doing that, but maybe too much exposure to saying no all the time. So I'm still learning to make good, timely choices.

I have NOT bought a lot of things 😅i now have the opposite of urge to buy. Even when I see things I like I have this strong urge not even rational thought to not buy. Especially make up & skincare. I guess it's a counter reaction to my past behaviour, finding more hobbies, having a lot and wanting to downsize. Even if unrealistic I want to use things up. I still like make up and skincare. I don't feel panic to have to declutter things in droves BUT the thought if/how to simplify is still present all the time. I feel like it's unfinished business 😅so I want to keep making progress. And there is make up I know isn't for me. And things I don't use. Not buying, using and downsizing is just a strong feeling... It feels more serious & long term than in the past. Hi! I work as a medical assistant in a doctor's office who specializes in migraines and headaches. Light is not a trigger for migraines, the sensitivity to it is a symptom of it. If wearing sunglasses help to improve your symptoms, then it's always encouraged, but know that light sensitivity is not the root cause. It is most often neck generated. Try laying on your side in a neck-aligned position (nose, chin, and breastbone in a straight line) for at least 15 minutes with an ice pack on your neck. This can help to calm down some of those irritated neck structures and get the weight of your head off your neck and shoulders.
