Good video, and you did a good job of covering most of the issues we encountered in Athens, Naxos and Paros. I would add though. the ATMs give out large bills, and some places have trouble even changing or taking a 20 Euro, so try to get some small change. The other detail is the toilet paper thing. The containers where you put the paper are typically stainless steel foot operated, so they enclose the dirty paper with a lid, and the bathrooms do not smell, which was my expectation. And I don't know if this is a universal problem, but I didn't encounter hotels that provided wash cloths, like we always have in the US. So if you like to use a washcloth for bathing, bring one with you from home. We also found that seafood was expensive compared to land meats, so that was a surprise, because I thought seafood would be cheaper. Keep up the good work, we enjoy your vids.

Thank you! That is a good tip. I hate it too. Yes, they definitely don’t smell and are emptied everyday in a hotel. Seafood is surprisingly expensive and I haven’t figured it out. Great tips!!

The regions of Epirus, Macedonia, Thrace and North Aegean Islands are quite unknown to most tourists, there are beautiful landscapes there as well, some much cooler than the islands people already know

Let's say something important for every tourist who comes to Greece. Greece has many more islands than Santorini or Mykonos, lesser known but equally or even more beautiful. Do not hesitate to look for alternative places in Greece, either on the mainland or on islands, which are less well known but extremally beautiful. Trust me, you'll have a better time. From a Greek.

I really enjoyed this, thank you. My comments are that you can do Santorini, including Akrotiri and and the fabulous museum, free on a day trip. Paros is also a great island. It is beginning to be noticed by today's young people. I went when I was 23 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Beautiful, with all the amenities, but not crowded, it is the hidden gem of the Greek islands.😀

Athens in more than the Acropolis. Say it again for the people in the back! lol.We had no idea there were so many "random" locations for the ruins. Back in America they want to rush you out of the restaurant; so nice to just relax at the restaurant without having to run out of the restaurant as soon as you are done eating. I thought the strikes were just for ferries; but they also strike on the metros. Don't want to learn that the hard way. lol. Always bring cash; never flush toilet paper. Great tips!

Thank you for sharing those details. I didn't know about the tipping culture or the complimentary drink and now I will keep that in mind. I will also be wary of avoiding smoking area and will be prepared for 'Greek time'. I didn't know cash is preferable so I am prepared for half of my budget being in cash and half on card. Now that I know I will try to buy things like entry tickets or groceries with the card and leave cash for restaurants and stores.

@@agirlandherpassport yeah I think you have to experience it once to never be faced by it again😂 also another tip that might be for the other islands/Greece overall is that if you decide to take money out the ATM they will charge you a fee for it. Last year on Syros, where I’m from, I had to pay a 3/4 euro transaction fee. So highly recommend taking out money in your home country to avoid extra charges!

Oh see to Americans this is normal. If you don’t withdraw money from your bank’s atm there is a fee in the US. There will also usually a foreign transaction fee too.

The EU had better agreements for banking than the US so that is probably why. The US system is not very regulated.

I've been to Greece and I loved it. One thing you didn't mention when you were talking about bathrooms was that there are a lot of squatter toilets. This was a bit of a surprise for me and I felt if you have to squat over a hole they should have support bars to hold on to. The other thing you didn't mention was if you have mobility problems Greece can be difficult.

Hi there. Loved this video. We will be coming to Greece in September for 27 days. I have a week (8 days)booked in Crete, and 2 days in Santorini and 3 in Milos. We will be returning to Athens and mainland for for the remainder. I’d like to spend some time in Athens, plus do a bit drive to a bit of the Peloponnese peninsula, maybe Corinth, Mycenae, Nafplio, Epidavros, with maybe Delphi and possibly Meteora. Am I being too ambitious? How much time should I plan on Athens if it’s my first visit to Greece? Can I comfortably fit in some of the Peninsula with Delphi and Meteroa? Or is that just crazy? We will be leaving Greece for Istanbul for a week then returning to Athens for a full day before catching our flight back to Canada. Any thoughts on this?

I have been following you for a few days now. My wife and I are frequent travelers to Europe. Once a year. In 2018 we were in Italy for 9 months. Now Covid. We are waiting to go traveling. I would say that if you aren’t getting vaccinated and you don’t have a medical reason not to then you shouldn’t be going anywhere. It’s too dangerous with the Delta variant. Plus most European countries are only letting vaccinated people inside museums and restaurants. Here in Greece, you cannot eat inside without it. Europe is only going to get stricter with the Delta variant.

Hi, I really like how how your video is informative, especially for someone like myself, who just started to research the country. I'm interested to learn more about Sailing trips around islands that you mentioned. How does it work: is it private boat, what is price per person or family maybe, do you stay overnight, where you eat? Also, is it possible to visit islands completely off season? For example, in November in order to explore outdoors by feet and avoid the heat. Thank you :)

You can either hire a whole boat with a captain or do a cabin charter that might be with other people and a captain. You sleep on the boat. They have kitchens so you will eat on board during the day and mostly you stop at islands for the night and dinner. Some islands will be pretty closed down in the winter but not all. The bigger islands never stop as they have other businesses besides tourism. Hope that helps

You’re welcome. Weather can be cold, windy and wet. But it could be warm and sunny. The winter in Greece is unpredictable. Hotels will be less expensive though. Also weather depends on where in Greece you are going.

The bins are usually lined with a trash bag so it isn’t really an issue. I have never seen a gross bin in a hotel bathroom.

No, I do not recommend that. If you want to get Euros before you come, go to your bank but do not exchange any money here. I would just Euros at the ATM when you arrive and throughout your trip.

There are so many! Some of my favorites are Naxos, Ios, Kea, Kythnos and Tinos. Some of these have tourists but are not so famous. There aren't really any that only locals know as Europeans have been coming for many many years on holiday.

The weather is variable at that time. It is the beginning of the rainy season. It could be warm but it could be cool. As far as things being open it will depend on which island. Lots no restaurants will close at the end of October or even the end of September. What islands are you wanting to go to?

You’re welcome. Athens never closes but Santorini and Mykonos will be very quiet. I would check to see if the hotels you want to book would even be open. Those are very tourist focused islands so when they leave the locals close up so they can have a break. It won’t be completely dead but there will be a lot less options. It depends on what you want to do as well.

@@LegallyBlonde1809 Mykonos is not really known for its culture. It is mainly a nightlife location with great beaches. So that might mean that not much is open in November. Santorini has some more cultural things to do that should be open no matter the time of year. Check the hotel and restaurants in advance so you know what your options are. Hope that helps.

Hi, It depends on what you want to do while you are here. It won’t be very warm yet so the water will still be cold. You can easily spent a whole week in Athens but I know that isn’t for everyone. Let me know what you want to do as far as activities and I will give you some ideas.

@@agirlandherpassport Hi again, thanks for your input and time. We are flying in from Dublin, so anything will feel warm. Our friends are coming all the way from California and only have a week. So, I'm thinking we do a day trip or overnight on Hydra after our three days in Athens and then maybe rent a place down the coast but still on the mainland - so we don't lose time ferrying to the islands. I think it's too much for 7 days to do both. If we were to do that, is there a town along the coast that we can reach via public transport to rent for a few days? I hear you have to have an international driver's license to rent a car there. We'll be there April 9-16, so before Easter. We aren't worried about beach weather but would be willing to spring for a rental with a pool or hot tub. thank you mucho!

Hydra is a great idea. Also look at Aegina or Agistri. They are also very close. Even closer than Hydra. You could do one of those as well as Hydra. Nearer to Athens, I would look at Voula and the area around it.

It’s fine if you think you won’t need any help for things but if you need help with taxis, things to do and restaurants then a hotel is better.

If you fly you can. I don't recommend it though. You are going to spend many hours at the airport waiting for your flight. I would at least spend one night there.

It is very popular. It is mostly safe. Pickpockets can be an issue on the metro but that is about it.

I haven’t driven in Athens. It doesn’t seem to bad but I am a very good driver and have driven all over the world. I think it is more a matter of being patient as the traffic jams can be bad. The streets where they park ok both sides make me nervous though!!

I do live in Greece. I don’t exchange them. I usually just get money from an atm. Greece is very safe and I personally don’t recommend a cruise here. You won’t see much on each island.

The only place where there is still a substantial RomanCatholic community in Greece left from the time the Catholics had conquered us back after the 4th Crusade ia in Syros, which is the capital island of Cyclades. There is even a Metropolitan or Archbishop, i can't remember, of the Papists having his Seat there so you might want to visit that church.

In Athens, go to the Acropolis and the museum, explore Plaka and Monastiraki areas. Hope that helps a bit.

What reall6 shocked me on my first visit to Greece, (admittedly it was back in 1968) was the amount of stray cats and dogs. Things have improved in that animal welfare organizations have sprung up, but a lot of the smaller island and rural areas treat not only strays cruelly but equines as well. So, do not climb up on donkeys if you have legs! These poor creatures are treated abominably. As for the main parts of this video, I find it too waffly. The business with smoking and paying with cash....no big deal either way.

@@agirlandherpassport When you have a family and you eat and drink out 2-3 times per day (during vacation that is) you can't afford to tip 3 euros each time. And no waiter expects a 10% tip. Maybe in Mykonos and Rhodes, but definitely not in most islands or mainland. You must have quite wealthy friends...Keep them :)

But as I said, most Greeks don't, mostly due to the financial situation, yet, as you mentioned in the video, it is very common. Especially for regular customers. As a stupid, filthy smoker, I can't tell you the joy that greeted me in what was then Athens' international airport. Got off the plane, walked the short hall into the airport at large and was greeted with the rising haze and stench of hundreds of active smokers. This was 25 years ago, and I did get to witness the tightening of smoking laws over the next decade, off and on. It will be interesting to gauge the difference when I make my way back to Greece. (Yes, I'm still a stupid, filthy smoker. I'll likely have quit by the time I get back to Greece, but ... in defense of expats who don't quit smoking while living in Greece, they're only about $5 a pack. I mean, I plotz to think of how much money I could save by smoking in Greece.) Anyway, another lovely video, and thank you.

The airport definitely isn’t like that now. Lots of people still smoke but mostly outside. Very few places now allow it inside. I don’t know how much they are now but I think for many it’s expensive as they tend to roll their own.
