First things first: very informative video! I do have doubts about several points you make in it though: This I need to get out of the way: I have never heard of a definitive production number given for the Zanzibar, what's the source for that number? I appreciate the effort of going through he different animations, but counting ships seen in the animations (some which are questionable, like those originally from the Gihren's Greed games) is not a valid source for making such claim, specially with later series adding more ships overtime. At most I would suggest claiming that "at least 16 Zanzibar class ships can be confirmed". I got really confused when you started using the term "amphibious", and I want to assume you saw it used with Cima's marines in the wikia, which unfortunately didn't explain what it mean in their particular context: from what I have read, the term doesn't relate at all to water, but to troops that engage in combat from space into colonies, which would be the rough equivalent of real life amines which would engage from the sea into the shores. In Cima's case, this is the reason why her group was chosen for the GG gasing: since their unit was trained & equip to sortie from space into colonies. Anyway, the important thing to note is that the term only applies to Marine Amphibious Unit Cima or MAU Cima, and that the regular Zanzibar, mostly intended to work between Earth and space, doesn't. In fact, the term I mostly see associated with the Zanzibar is "mobile" cruiser, in contrast to the Musai light cruiser or Chivvay heavy cruiser. Also, I wouldn't compare the Zanzibar to an HLV, it's like comparing either a Medea or Fat Uncle to either a Gaw or Pegasus class: of course they are worse at combat, they are transport ships first and combat vessels (if at all) second. More importantly, in many cases they re intended to operate in non-combat areas or with escorts, which takes me to the Komusai, likely the closest ship comparable to the Zanzibar in its role. Also a reentry capable ship, but much smaller, IIRC a couple of Komusais even escort Ramba Ral's Zanzibar when it first appears int he series. Technically there's another Zeon OYW ship, but I'll talk about that one in a bit. The Zanzibar doesn't actually replace its mega particles cannons with blinding flashlights: it's the same weapon, known as the deflection type mega particle cannon. These use an i-field at the front of the "barrel" , allowing them to change the direction of a focused beam by 20º, fire a scatter mega particle beam or create a blinding flashlight. Examples of these are the Gogg, which nowadays is more commonly shown firing single beams, but older games like Federation vs Zeon depicted it firing the scatter beam from the TV series. The blinding flashlight would be the same as the Dom's, difference being that the Dom doesn't have the output to fire a focused beam (well, it did in the original TV series, but that was been retconned). In short, the Zanzibar's output allows it to operate this weapon in any of these modes. Off the top of my head, I don't recall a specific case of the Zanzibar using the scatter beam mode, but I do recall the Argama using it against the Endra, showing that some of these ship weapons can effectively be used this way. As for the missiles, the Musai also has a set of 2 large missile launchers, aside from its 10 smaller missile launchers (16 in the MS Igloo redesign), with the novels even giving both the Musai's and Zanzibar's missiles unique names (which I don't recall right now). And by the way, where did you get the 80mm spec for the Zanzibar machine guns? I really doubt they are lower caliber than the smaller ones from the Zanzibar II and haven't seen the 80mm caliber figure before. I haven't read the MSV-R manga, so I can't comment on the Sangre Azul, but on the Zanzibar Kai, I just want to point out that the wikia claims that the other 2 ships left for Axis, one even confused for the Chimera. Unfortunately, the Gundam wikia being what it is, is not always the more reliable source of data. On the technical aspect though, I do have seen the MSV-R profile of the Zanzibar Kai and it's implied that the "cargo" hatch right next to the catapult is another MS hangar, thus increasing its capacity and turning the Zanzibar Kai into a dedicated space bound MS carrier. On a related note, while I have also seen the 6 MS figure thrown around for the Zanzibar, the largest one I have heard is 9 from the Gundam 0079 RPG, which matches what you mentioned. Realistically though, its "hangar" (technically more of a large cargo area where MS and more importantly, MAs can be carried) should be able to hold far more machines. If no MAs are being carried, I could easily imagine the room used for a single MS like the Bigro being enough to fit another 6 MS, not just 3 more per MA, easily driving this number up to 15. This would fall more or less in line with what we see in the Zeta era, where many ships regularly carry 50% more MS than their given capacity's (normally measured by MS maintenance beds by then) specially for the larger battles. I really want to ask you to double check any info you find in the wikia, since a lot of it is made up, and many times outright wrong, like the involvement of the United Maintenance Plan or UMP with ships. The UMP was created solely to deal with the standardization of MS, not ships. We have little info on the origins of the Tivvay and Zanzibar II, but their corresponding Musais do gives us some info: the Late Type Musai from 0083 was designed as a a thorough upgrade to the Musai, correcting problems like lack of AA defenses, adding more firepower, increasing MS capacity from 3 to 4 and adding MS catapults. The Final Type Musai from 0080 came after it, with a very different purpose in mind: with the EF reverting the course of the war, Zeon knew that the will have to face the numerically superior EF fleet so they designed this simplified (at least functionally-wise) Musai that had less firepower than the original with the objective of reducing the gap between the size of their navy and the EFs. Do these criteria apply to the Zanzibar II and Tivvay? To an extent yes, the Tivvay also being rather lacking in firepower and the Zanzibar II improving in areas like firepower and MS catapults. However, I'm very inclined to think that Zanzibar II wasn't designed to operate on Earth at all, similar to the Zanzibar Kai. The main gun of the standard Zanzibar by modern/recent publications is described as a projectile weapon, which makes sense if it's going to operate on Earth since it allows it fire in an arc trajectory and strike targets behind obstructions. Changing all of the Zanzibar II guns to beam guns does suggest the intent to operate only in space, where projectile weapons are less effective while beams are even more so. Furthermore, I have many concerns on how the sideway catapult would actually work on Earth: in space it's not so much problem to quickly push your MS away from the ship while preserving the boost from the catapult, but on Earth while under the influence of gravity? Also, can't help but think that side of the MS not on the rail would drag down the MS while under gravity, specially if you consider that any handheld weapons would need to be carried in that arm. Also brings out the question of how do the other MS-14F launch? Their knuckle shields are handheld by a grip in order to use it as a blunt weapon, so if they are carrying one, their left hand is not available, leaving the right one that can' t carry a weapon at launch then, thus limiting their potential weapons. But I digress. I was also unfamiliar withe story of the Keraunos: I had seen the design images, but didn't know its background proper. Lastly a couple of interesting details: The Dolos began development in December 0078, and despite only having 7 MS catapults, the animation suggest that these were really efficient, launching continuous lines of MS from them, seemingly emptying its entire complement in mater of seconds rather than minutes. Apparently the Gwazine was designed to also operate on Earth, but the reentry test with one of the ships ended in failure and not further attempts were made. That's likely why the MS Igloo redesign added wing engines to the ship, best observed in the lineart. It wouldn't be until the Sadalahn that a ballute system allowed a similar large battleship to descend to Earth. Still, I'm hoping we do see a Gwazine operation on Earth at some point (Thunderbolt got a several kilometer long Dolos in the sea, so I wouldn't be surprised). There's also the rather unknown King of Dragon & Kaiser of Dragon, but I'm not sure you want to check ships that obscure. Anyway, I would also suggest checking Mark Simmons site, he has translations of many old japanese only publications with lots of interesting info on Universal Century Gundam series, and sourced unlike the gundam wikia: www.ultimatemark.com/gundam/
@gundamfacts2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately while a lot of thing you say are correct, I don't rely on the wiki for informations. In fact, I used to be a major contributors there and MAHQ before deciding to do things my own. For the Gwazine, it was never intended for athmospheric flight, just because they threw one down to see if it was capable of withstanding it doesn't mean it was designed for. As for the Kaiser of Dragons I'm well aware of it, I mentionned it in my Mother Vanguard video. The HLV and Zanzibar can't be compared yes, but one was thought to fix the flaw of the other since they were both intended to keep the supply line between Earth and Side 3. The mega particle variant you mention being the flashlight is interesting, after all we know low rating beam weapons have use as flash weapons before (Dom chest gun), but Japanese sources always quote "flashlights" and not beam guns, it's a question of not making too much assumptions. As for AMPHIBIOUS carrier, it's a common term used in UC for Earth/Space ship, being notably applied to the Zanzibar main counterpart, the Pegasus line.
@ZeonicFenrir2 жыл бұрын
@@gundamfacts Actually, Gundam Century do seems to indicate that the Gwazine was first designed to work in the atmosphere, but upon the test's failure, modifications were made to keep it as an space only warship: "Gwazine: A large battleship which could be said to have the most elegant hull of both sides. It was designed to enter the atmosphere and was capable of carrying 20 mobile suits. On January 24, U.C.0080, just after the Zeon forces began their Earth landing operations, an atmospheric entry test was performed with the Gwamel, the second ship of the class. However, the test ended in failure as the Gwamel disintegrated at an altitude of 30,000 meters, and the fragments of its hull were scattered across the Atlantic Ocean. The results of the investigation confirmed that the Gwazine's construction was unable to withstand atmospheric entry. But since there were no problems using it in space, it was remodeled to carry a small atmospheric entry craft in its bow, and production then continued. Other ships of this class included the Great Degwin, the Gwaran, and the Gwarib." www.ultimatemark.com/gundam/archive/gundamcentury.html I can see your point with the HLV and Zanzibar, though ultimately I think the different in scope still makes difficult to consider they fulfill a similar function, at least not on its own: the HLV is basically a container with rockets, literally requiring to be ferried in space with a Musai and unable to move on its own within the Earth's atmosphere (MS Igloo 2 dramatization aside). At that point we would actually be comparing how efficient a Musai moving HLVs is compared to a Zanzibar, and I'm inclined to think that the Musai does things more efficiently, specially resource-wise. In an optimal scenario, the Musai would drop an HLV with manufactured goods and equipment for the ground forces and afterwards pick up a HLV full of raw materials to bring back to Side 3. In the Side 3-Earth orbit trip, the Musai would be protecting the HLV, while and HLV launched from Earth would depart from a Zeon base, rising through Zeon controlled airspace, and ideally reach orbit where a Musai would already be read to pick it up for the return trip to Side 3. As the war situation deteriorated, the Zanzibar do would be come the better choice given the uncertainty of that pick up Musai being there, or the HLV not being found first by EF forces on the ground (a plot point in the Lost War Chronicles manga or the recent Code Fairy video game). The japanese publications have made many changes overtime, and the Zanzibar is no exception: "ZANZIBAR 1981 SPECS armament: twin mega particle cannon x 1, fixed mega particle cannon x 4, twin autocannon x 2, mobile suit x 12 • Weight listed as 24,000t in Gundam Manual, and 22,000t in Roman Album Extra 42. 1982 SPECS armament: retractable twin main gun x 1, twin autocannon x 5, giant floodlight or mega particle cannon x 4 • As per Kodansha Pocket Card 8. • Armament includes missiles and twin 600mm recoilless gun x 1, as per Keibunsha Encyclopedia 112. MODERN SPECS armament: deflection type mega particle cannon turret x 4, projectile type twin gun x 1, twin heavy autocannon x 5 • As per MSV Collection File [In Space]. overall length: 255m overall width: 222m • As per Gundam Mechanics VI." www.ultimatemark.com/gundam/archive/specscomparison.html There you go: the earlier publications do give the setup you indicated in the video, but the more recent ones changed them to the ones I told you. Also, no mention of the 80mm caliber for the autocannons . Thanks for the info on the usage of the amphibious: I will look more into it used with ships as you suggest, though I expect it to be a tad bit difficult given that most of the searches involving "Gundam" and "amphibious" tends to send you in a different direction.
@ZeonicFenrir2 жыл бұрын
@@gundamfacts Just watched your other video to check what you mentioned on the King of Dragon, which also drove me to check wikia and the images posted there: seems thing gets weirder every time I hear about this ship: I knew it had some sort of flight mode, with the wings extended to the side, which is different from the first image from Gundam Katana which seemed to depict the space mode, with the wings folded to the front next to the dragon's head "neck". However, it seems Gundam Katana took things a step... no, scratch that, several steps further and made it capable of transforming into a dragon shaped giant mecha, as seen in the last image in the wikia: that's Macross levels of nuttiness! I really doubt that was part of the original scope of the ship's design though, which do raises the question of how much of what we know of that ship class actually applies to the supposed version from the OYW? Zeon's Minovksy craft system seemed less advanced than the EF's at the time, with the more notable successes being the Adzam, which still required the 8 rotors to assist it, and the Apsalus, which specially by the end (with Ghinias' breakdown) seems unlikely that much of the research survived or was shared with the rest of Zeon. Therefore, I could also see that as a limitation that led to not build the ship during the OYW. That being said, Mark mentioned once that apparently the Gwanban and Gwanzan were actually built during the OYW, but weren't ready in time to participate in the battle of A Baoa Qu: www.mechatalk.net/viewtopic.php?p=351486#p351486 In the same thread he theorizes that these ships are likely larger than the official 415m figure, since in the Zeta movies we see an Endra pass inferno of the Gwanban, making the later look twice as long. The Endra's official length is 410m (which would make the Gwanban around 800m long), but in the thread Mark suggested that the Endra should be more around 300m long, thus making the Gwanban around 600m long. There's also the issue that the Gwanban needs to be larger so that the Neue Ziel can physically fit inside it. The later is an issue that also came up when trying to make sense with size of the Tivvay and Rewloola: the former has to be wide enough so that 2 Gelgoog Jaeger's can fly side by side through its MS hangar door, result of its divided hangar and the launch sequence seen in 0080, thus needing to be much larger than its predecessor. The Rewloola on the other hand would be too small at 250m compared to the Alpha Azieru, namely the scene where the later is being towed by the Rewloola (I think this also applies to the Neo Zeon in Unicorn, but I haven't checked). But I digress. Anyway, this would actually put the Gwanban on the same length ballpark as the King of Dragon, and also built during the OYW. It would have been cool if they had tied the King of Dragon to destruction of the Gwamel during its reentry test, basically suggesting that its development started once they realized that the Gwazine class would be unable to be used on Earth as intended. It could also tie with the fact that Degwin already had the Great Degwin at his personal service, so they could even claim that it was a personal request from Degwin to do as you indicated in your video, which he would have done in the Great Degwin instead had his ship been capable of surviving reentry and operate on Earth as expected. After you pointed it out, I kind of recalled the term amphibious used for the Pegasus class at the mechatalk forums, but aside from a toy, I couldn't find info using the term for the White Base/Pegasus class, and as I feared, my searches rather kept driving me towards info on amphibious MS. Perhaps it might have been precisely this situation that led to Sunrise stop using the term: to avoid the confusion with the more literal amphibious MS. Still, I get what you meant.
