"Plastic Ono Band" is a kind of "naked album", "All things Must Pass" is a kind of "dressed album". The great fact is that both where produced by Phil Spector, who adapts to what John (on one side) or George (on the other) wanted to do.

Both are great albums. I listen to All Things Must Pass a lot more but that's just me. Still love Plastic Ono Band. Also I think George liked it. That Australian interview that George gave in the early 80's has a part where he sang a line from Mother. He knew what was up! Thanks John!

Great video John. I love all of your video's but this one was special. You have such an understanding of the Beatles as humans that when you talk about them it's as if we had been there with them at the time.

As you know only too well, John, I’ve never been a big fan of the Beatles’ solo work but these two albums are the exception. Two favorites of mine from the post-Beatles era. Excellent discussion.

Plastic One Band is a work of art and All things Must Pass is artistic.

Battle of the titans. As you point out, these are two very different albums but equally great in their artistic merit. Like you, I struggle with the notion of ranking one above the other. Of all the Beatles' solo albums I definitely consider these as one and two in whichever order one wants to list them. Each stands apart from anything The Beatles did together and from what either George or John did afterwards.

He talks about how expensive ATMP is. I don't know what it goes for these days, but I paid $5.50 in 1970. Which was par for the course for albums back then. I sure didn't feel ripped off.

he didn't charge for a triple as I remember. even so, what does that have to do with the quality of the album

James S He was mostly referring to the modern reissue vinyl, which is way overpriced, compared to how the album cost when it first came out and there being other double/triple LP reissues being charged a lot less and are more reasonable

No it was steeply priced a full triple cost when it came out. I couldn't afford it so my dad bought it for me for XMas in 1970. But like imports, that has nothing to with quality.

I love "All Things Must Pass" especially the title track which the Beatles had a chance to record but didn't. So many great songs on that album although I don't need 'Isn't It a Pity' on there twice, he had plenty more songs he could have replaced one of those with. 'What Is Life' used to play on the radio when I was first getting into music, loved hearing it every time. 'If Not for You' he wrote with Bob Dylan, great song, so are 'Let It Down,' 'Beware of Darkness' and 'Apple Scruffs' which he wrote for the fans. The 3rd disc was supposedly a bonus thrown in for free but we paid for it all the same. I do like "Plastic Ono Band" but as you said it's not an uplifting record, you have to be in the mood to hear it.

Hi. Two very good albums. A very honest record from John and a stack of George songs on All Things Must Pass. The latter shows the capacity of George. So many songs, some from a few years back. Imagine The Beatles had made more efforts of the song All Things Must Pass and it had been released on Let It Be. That would have been a boost for that album. Side 5 and 6 of All Things Must Pass, I seldom play, but the first 4 sides are magnificent. Beware Of Darkness.... what a superb song and Isn't It A Pity is a gem as well. Personally, I listen more to ATMP, although POB is a superb album as well. You can feel Johns pain and hurt. It was good to split, but it could have happened on nicer way. Like John said " The Dream Is Over".

What amazes me about 'POB' is that despite the use of the stark three instrument production, the songs don't sound alike....and it predated punk by about 8 years.

Many thanks for the comparison. I understand what you mean about Georges album, and think it's a valid point, but as I bought it at the time it came out, all I can say is that I wasn't worried about paying for a triple album even, as you say, one of them was the Apple Jam. I'm still glad it's there though as it is a record (excuse the pun) of how George wanted his first solo album to be. Thanks again.

GH should have just put out one album, then follow it up with another album for the rest of the songs. He would have had two great albums under his belt at that point in this solo career rather than just one. I would have held back the third record for an anniversary re-release or chuck it outright. Easily two of the best solo Beatles albums.

A really excellent comparison - thanks so much for the great work. I would love to see Giles Martin get his hands on the All Things Must Pass tapes and partially "de-Spectorise" it. A few tracks (as you mention) are just overdone and to my ears descend into muddiness. I'm sure Giles could retain the overall enormity of the wall of sound while bringing back a lot more clarity and crispness. Let's see what he tackles after the Abbey Road 50th anniversary.

Plastic Ono Band has aged much better and is more timeless, while ATMP is very much a product of its time (particularly in terms of production) with some key exceptions, like “My Sweet Lord.” IMHO.

I disagree if you listen to the remastered version it's hard to say ATMP sounds dated compared to Plastic Ono Band. Both are probably the best they did post-Beatles but I would say lyric wise Plastic goes a bit further but Production wise and in terms of a full fledged and finished album, its ATMP any time

These are two such great albums, that they almost make you glad the Beatles split up. The Harrison album is much more commercial than the Plastic Ono album, with multiple upbeat hit songs plaid on the rabio. Who could ever forget the sonic majesty of "My Swede Lurch"? That tune, and "You Rang," for those of us who were fans of The Addam's Family, are among the greatest masterbeaters of all time. Who could ever forgive, I mean forget, the awesome brilliance of that chorus? "Ding dong, ding dong." It shimmers with genius! I mean, come on. Who could ever have come up with such a thing? This is where Harrison comes into his Ono, superior to the other three beatles. "The problem with George is that he still believes in Father Christmas." Boy, did she ever pin the tale on that donkey. "Ring out the old, ring in the new." Who dares criticize George Harrison for stealing stuff from other musicians and poets? Sure, that line was "borrowed" from Robert Browning, a dead guy from England who was a minor haberdasher, rooster, and poet. But did he ever complain about it? No! He was happy being ripped off, as it boosted his popularity. And should we not talk about the elephant in the room? How many Harrison fans didn't quit what we were doing, run to the nearest hair port, and become Hare Krishnas? By chanting the name "Lurch," you will become free, people! My dog Alfie, after listening to "My Swede Lurch" one time, ran off to become a Hare Krishna. That was 50 years ago. Won't you please come home Alfie? You know we miss you. I have your din din waiting. If'n you come home, we'll give you two Milk Bones on the spot. Also, you can listen to my new David Byrne albums anytime you want. He's twice as smart as George, ten times as funny, and burning down the house, right now, as I speak. I once saw Alfie at JFK, dancing with the Krishnas, and shaking his tamborine like they had just sprayed it with Gravy Train. He wanted to play the tamboura, but the bitches wouldn't let him. Live and learn, Alfie. Say hullo to Vishnu for me. See you in the next lifetime. And please return my newspaper to me, you bad dog!

Wholly incongruous events require us to consider how unharmonious it is for murder, mixed with incarceration and romance, to intrude on the legacies of both of the superlatively sublime and wonderful albums so masterfully reviewed here. Sadly, the producer of record of both albums Phil Spector ended up a monstrous old man dead from Covid-19, a death penalty of sorts, in prison for shooting a woman he picked up who had spurned his advances. And with Lennon being shot by a deranged, doped with religion, publicity seeking "fan" who to this day, unlike any remaining convicted Manson devotee, is allowed annual conjugal visits with his partner. Love is real one must presume. On a separate note, selling price has positively nothing whatsoever to do with the quality of a work of high art such as ATMP. That logic comes from out of the blue. Some excellent imports are pricey too. So guess which album IS "in the top two if not the best solo albums of all time"? Lastly, one can't let pass the bizarre attempt to drag the mostly failed and unfinished sounding Bowl of Cherries into the league of these two radiant and brilliant works. This is puzzling. Ram as Paul's best only rates a B or B+ and ROTR a strong B. Maybe you're just trying to stir up a discussion here.

Both albums are great when they were released. All Things Must Pass is is more commercial, but it shows it age and is dated, I forgot the last time I played it for friends, where as Plastic Ono Band was not commercial, but I am always playing this for friends and it always gets rave reviews for first time listeners and none Beatle fans. For myself, if I had to choose only one post beatle solo album out of all of them, Plastic Ono Band would be my choice.

To me, it's a tie. Both brilliant albums. Certainly POB is a more raw, brutally honest and straight forward album but I love the grandness of the sound on ATMP. Shave off that 3rd jam disc and the 2nd shorter version of "Isn't it A Pity" and I think ATMP is a perfect album. I've heard demos for the ATMP songs, even then it's still a great album. I wish they would do a release for this album using just the demos.

I think Plastic Ono Band is John's best album. I think it is also the best solo ex Beatle's album. All Things Must Pass is one of the best but it falls a little short because it a little too overblown with the jam disc, and some of those songs needed a tighter edit.

It’s Johnny’s Birthday, followed by those jams, should have stayed in the can, a Maggie Mae type throwaway followed by utter tedium. I know that anniversary releases often have extra tracks. In the case of All Things Must Pass, a version without the dead weight would have been welcomed.

Maggie May and Dig It are wonderful. I found myself listening to Out of the Blue over and over lately - go back and give it another listen. It could have replaced the slow Pity and the tracks reordered. The rest of the jam should have been spooned out of the jar.

you've picked another rich vein for topics here John and made another well thought out and balanced video. I adore all of Georges work but an album that includes both Mother (what a track to open your 1st solo career album with!) and God has to shade it. You can buy ATMP for much less then £100 esp. 2nd hand but I've thought for years it should have been reissued without the Apple jam tracks, which for me were a thing of their time and quickly dated.

The press have told us for years ATMP is the best Beatles solo album but I definitely disagree. I’m giving my vote to POB for the simple fact that their is one masterpiece on both these albums and it’s mother. I believe John had NPD and this brutally honest and personal masterpiece explains how he turned out that way. No pretentious preaching . Just straight for the throat raw blues. Ram beats both for me.

I think these 2, are the best solo Beatles, then Venus and Mars, Band on the Run. Paul made some great recordings but always a bit superficial , very hummable, catchy, but both John and George, where writing from a deeper mindset, wanted their songs to mean something? Paul is a tunesmith, like a professional songwriter from days gone by, he really doesn’t care the deep meaning of songs? He’s a craftsman who can churn them out, but there’s no deep meaning with most of his songs!

Plastic Ono Band is a hard listen- you have to make the effort. The lyrics are soaring, but musically it sorely misses McCartney & Harrison . All Things Must Pass is a masterpiece, with such a warm sound. It is too long, and could easily ditch I Dig Love & V2 of Isn't It A Pity, while the 3rd disc isn't worth repeated listening.
