I think it’s for customization. But they changed them in Vista, even though they already sounded great and made them worse. I feel like there are features that Microsoft forgot about and haven’t upgraded since Vista, so they’ve been lying around for 18 years, not fitting in with new software. The screen savers are another example of this.

@@DanielP-jq4dj I think you're right when it comes to the second theory you presented. What may have happened (in my thought process) is that after XP introduced all the new sounds, they kept the sounds from Windows 2000 and before for hardware compatibility, and after Vista introduced a new set of sounds that replaced the XP sounds, they changed the legacy sounds to fit the Aero aesthetic better. As time went on and the need for software compatibility with programs from Windows 2000 and before lessened, Microsoft didn't see the need to update the sounds further, and so they let the legacy sounds be.

Government bureaucracy doesn’t allocate enough funds to an IT department so they pay out to Microsoft to keep all this crap in for 20 years. Microsoft won’t make a package system because most users are inept so ~40GB of the entirety of windows dating back to 1993 is dumped onto your hard drive.
