All Work and No Play : No Shore Leave at Paldiski
Our vessel arrived at our second loading port: Paldiski, Estonia. We only had three days of port stay. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to go ashore due to a lot of maintenance jobs. Plus there's nowhere nearby to go. The only place worth visiting was Talinn City but to get there, I would have had to walk about 2 km to the train station and ride the train for 1.5 hours. That's just too far for so little time so I decided just to stay onboard and chill.

I can definitely relate to that. I delivered parts in Germany. By the time we off loaded everything the area I was in went on total lockdown for 30 days. Bastards never warned me about that. Talk about a setup. No time off for me so they had me join in. Infantry wasn't my cup of tea. Oh well, I just sucked it up. Nothing else to do.

Hi! I have been there in 1992 by sailing boat. It was a really awful place then. Just left by the russians and what they leave behind when they have to go ... you cant imagine. I think you didn't miss much anyway. But if you have the chance to have a shore leave in Tallin, that's a place to go!

During the video, I was wondering why some of your engine room crew were working with what appeared to be solvent cleaning parts of a machine without gloves,??

It's just diesel. Personally, I prefer doing the final touches without gloves. Actually feeling the surfaces lets me know if things were done right.

The single use latex or vinyl gloves a were not in common use when was a sea going engineer, just barrier cream and as chief makoi says checking critical parts is best done with out gloves

Chief MAKOi, on 'average' how old are the ships you've sailed on? Like all machines the nearly countless machines on ships have to be rebuilt on a given or some when they break down schedule, I assume many cant be R & R'd while the main engine is running? I always enjoy all your videos 'and' the often humorous times on board but few if any show the daily life of the Ship's Captain (s), is there a reason for this?

Could I ask a technical question? Why is it that when you are bunkering, you have to go through the process of manually connecting the coupler adaptor, before connecting the supply line? Is it because at different ports they have different adapters (no international standard), or is it because you can't guarantee that leaving the adapter on is waterproof? Please let me know if you need me to explain further as I am not maritime savvy so don't know the real terms.
