Unless you're counting the sushi place, I noticed there's no mention of all you can eat Chinese buffets which are still pretty common in North Carolina at least. On the more premium end there's also the all you can eat restaurants where you still have to order everything through a waiter. There's Hot pot and Korean BBQ where you cook it yourself, and I recently even had an all-you-can-eat seafood including snow crab legs. Theres also the Brazilian Steakhouse style where the servers bring various cuts of meat around the room on skewers and slice off just the end of anything you want, and then take it back to the kitchen to cook a new crust.
@Sotanaht09 күн бұрын
Then there are non all-you-can-eat restaurants that offer some kind of all-you-can-eat special. Sonny's does all-you-can-eat BBQ on weekdays, On The Border does endless enchiladas on Mondays. Red Lobster probably still does shrimp on Monday. Olive Garden is known for their unlimited soup, salad, and breadsticks. Note that some of these places don't advertise or put the all-you-can-eat on the menu, but still have it when asked. Golden Corral has a special place in my heart. I remember when I was seven years old, my family and I took a road trip down to Florida. The van was stuffy and my brother ended up getting carsick, but at some point my grandparents brought up the fact we were going to stop by a buffet. Now, at this point in my life, I was convinced that buffets were a thing of the past that only existed in movies, so this info drop was like telling me that I could meet the real Santa. I'm obviously interested and then they bring up the chocolate fountain. I was SO excited. The whole time my brother and I were just going on and on about this giant chocolate fountain they spoke of, all giggles and whatnot. I don't remember if the adults tried talking to us during it because WOW a chocolate fountain? Can I swim in it?? PLEASE?? Eventually we get there and my grandpa forces us to eat an actual meal before even looking the thing, but oh my goodness, when I saw it, I could've sworn I heard the angels sing. Granted, I was a chunky kid with an intense sweet tooth, so it really was fat kid heaven for me. Tasted even better than I expected. Some guy warned my brother and I about the potential stomach ache we were going give ourselves, but did that matter? No, not at all. If anything, the stomach ache was worth it. 10/10, one of my favorite childhood memories.

I live in FL, and Golden Corral isn't stuffed to the gills like it used to be, but it's got a LOT more going for it than the one in this one. To be completely honest, as a former Golden Corral Employee, I can honestly tell anyone and everyone to not go to one. The problem with the restaurants was their quality and germ spread control. Like, there used to be many videos and photos out there of what it was like to go to a GC in the back, and it was always fucking hell. The one I used to work at was infamous because of that one instance where they had the employees move the raw, uncooked food, around the back, where the dumpster was (I think there’s a re-upload of it on KZbin.), and while I wasn’t there long enough to see that happen, I do remember when the location used to be in absolute hell because of what the people who worked there (Mostly the managers) and the people that used to go there would pull. You will never hear about that exact location anymore because it got completely demolished like, a year or so ago go as of writing this, but I will always tell people that: it’s never really worth going to a GC location, unless you hear about generally above better reviews on like every platform that you can review it on. I can’t say about anything about the other All-You-Can-Eat Restaurants, but I can talk about GC as a former employee. I haven’t been in the food industry since… early 2024, and I just outright refuse to go back, I would rather work in retail again, than work in food. Only reason being that: I can’t tolerate food anymore (mainly fast food) and I don’t have the energy for it anymore. Retail I can tolerate more though, and just about anyone can jump into overall retail… generally speaking, because Ik retail isn’t for everyone. Like, I would rather go to a small time, more expensive buffet, than go to a fucking gc again, and the only reason the company is even still around I hear, is because of their restaurant over in NYC. I don’t plan on going back to Golden Corral, or just about any food service restaurant, and I honestly don’t think anyone should, unless you’re a teen and are willing to get your learners permit.

We also had Old Country Buffet, but that chain's locations, plus it's slightly-differently-named sister locations all shut down as they couldn't compete with Golden Corral. The restaurant was dressed up for a more expensive feel but the food wasn't really that expensive. Also tips were banned. They had a big sign explaining why - they priced themselves just enough that tips weren't needed and argued that tips don't pay the cooks in the back or the delivery drivers that are part of the network that keeps the restaurant running. I'm not remembering it word for word but something to that effect. Also fun fact, next time you are in a resturant, check the chairs. If the chairs look uncomfortable they probably don't want you long. If they are comfy they probably make most of their money keeping you there and charging you for the expensive drinks or other add ons.

It is a Pizza Buffet known for its huge pizza buffet. No less than 8 Pizzas out at a time, and they would take requests for different pies if you asked. My friends liked it a lot, but I rarely go anymore, since it is on the far side of town.

Being Canadian I had only been to a Golden Corral once - Orlando in 2017 before Wrestlemania - the amount of beef I ate that day cost them more than the entire pandemic. Being in Florida my server also kept calling me 'papi' which brought to life a fetish I didn't know I had before. 8 out of 10. Where I live the only buffets are typically Indian or Chinese restaurants and they make a point to have no more than 3 proteins, 2 starches and 2 soups available. Really disappointing.

remember golden corral always being mediocre, like it's not gonna kill you to eat it, but it was just middle of the road. Nothing stood out. The one here closed like 4 years ago, and as far as I know they never did steak on the bar, it was order only.

The plate game is a Kura Sushi only thing, both in the US and Japan. I have been to Kaiten Sushi places in both countries where you just stack your plates when you are done. Most independent Kaiten sushi places do not have games or anywhere to insert plates. I have lived in both the US and Japan so trust me on this.

I saw a weird all you can eat restaurant where you still had a menu and a server and just every time you wanted more food you would just ask your server to bring you more food and then if you left a certain amount of food on your plate at the end then they would charge you extra.
@nylatolbert28277 күн бұрын
There's a lot of buffets like that in NYC. Where you order off a menu for various options and get refills of your desired items. Sometimes there's an IPAD to use. Usually at AYCE Korean BBQ places , or hotpot places and even the AYCE seafood places let you do this.

I remember as a kid in the late 90s/early 2000s going to Cici's pizza (an all you can eat pizza buffet with a small arcade) in central Mississippi. It was a tiny hole in the wall place in an old run down strip mall in a bad part of the town over from mine. Then Mazzios Pizza opened up in my hometown and had a buffet, but was garbage. Was still super popular for families (especially with kids) because at the time the only other place was a McDonalds, Krystal's (White Castle for you northerners) and Pizza Hut (without the buffet). There were a few other independent restaurants, but nothing really appropriate to bring hoards of children with. Even up until a few years ago (pre-pandemic) in the city I now moved to and bought a house in there was a "Specialty" pizza buffet that was actually really good. They did weird pizzas like BBQ Chicken, or cheeseburger, or dessert pizzas. They also had fresh cinnamon rolls that you ordered on demand for the table. I went exactly once and really liked it. Reminded me of the nostalgic memories of Cici's growing up, except fully realized. Then the pandemic shut them down. Now I think a Cici's still exists in another city (since the one I mentioned has definitely closed down), but it's really more of a kid place. Also I eat a lot healthier than when I did back then, so not really into all you can eat greasy pizza and screaming children.

I have similar feelings on the matter. I find when there is a place like that I do it for lunch and drink lots of water before and after. Never too late in the day and lots of lubrication to get it all through. If you're ever near, try ONeals Country Buffet in Madison FL

Ok my understanding was that souplantation due to poor investments or something was already financially weak going into the pandemic, which is why it instantly folded. It was always the most popular all you can eat chain in my area and all the restaurants used to always get good customers. So I don’t think their popularity or menu was the issue.

I have never been to a buffet where you had to wait for a server to refill your drink, theyve always had drink machines and stacks of cups. This is why I don't tip servers because there are no servers at the buffets that I've sent to. They're essentially busboys who bring you to a table. If I did visit one where they took care of drinks, I might tip them a dollar or two but unless I'm getting full table service, they aren't getting 15%-30%.

12:06 For the entire golden corral section, I just gotta say that it hasnt changed at all in my state after covid, it could be because Im from Texas but we still have the chocolate fountain, rainbow ice cream, metal utensils, nothing has changed for us. Its kinda heartbreaking that they changed in other states cause its so Iconic, and Im hoping the originality isnt just limited to Texas Edit: I did some checking about the chocolate fountain, and apparently yes, texas still has it, it just has stricter health regulations, they change out the chocolate every 3 hours for safety

Buffets worked for a time. But with rising food cost and labor not even regular restaurants can break even these days let alone all you can eat. The ones that still exist have very dubious quality and staff imo. But as the video mentioned another big thing is always eat at a location that is busy. Most the food poisoning and problems start with restaurants of any kind that feel like keeping that expired product for "just one more day" to save on food cost.

Hello, fellow North Carolinian! I distinctly remember going to Golden Corral many times as a child, but going significantly fewer times as I got older. Mainly because one time I saw a little fat kid continuously eating with his bare hands out of the chocolate fountain they had. I also remember that there was that claim that they were “recycling” their old food by mixing it into the newer food, and it killed any of my desire to go back.

The Golden Corral nearest to me is modern and has a good food selection, but the waitresses are the literal worst. The last two times I have been there I went an entire meal without a single refill. They walk by, they see the near empty glass, but no refills. No refills = no tip. So I save money I guess. I wish they had self-service drinks instead.

I like your style. Dishonest ppl make drink fountains impossible in some places. Hell, most of the Starbucks where I live also removed do-it-yourself-condiments (like cinnamon or nutmeg).

In my experience, location dictates the quality of Golden Corral. Went to one in New York and it was overpriced low quality food, with very poor service. Never going back there, despite it being within walking distance of my home. But went to a few in Florida and Texas, and it was significantly cheaper, the food quality was significantly higher, and the service was excellent (and they had metal utensils). Absolutely will go back next time I'm in Florida or Texas.

Where I live, my Pizza Hut just recently brought back their dinner buffet where you can pay about $10 per person from 4pm-7pm and we used to have a Golden Carrol that's in another close by town, but they recently just closed about a year and a few months ago.
