My house is a 1930 build. I just started during Thanksgiving break to tear down (the one and only) bathroom. The room is about 5x10. It was tough getting the old cast iron tub out, but I finally got it out. Next break to be able to work it is Christmas break. Now, this part of the house is creekside (not in flood zone by any means), in Southern OR, 5 feet off the ground, on post and pier. No Visqueen on the ground. I had to completely rebuild the creekside wall and put in a new window (above where the new tub is). Outside, I needed to get the scaffolding level first as the big ground rocks made it about a foot difference on two of the legs. Got that done and it fell over 3 times towards the creek, I got it back up and then put the step ladder on top ( I am 5'3, 59yrs, and a sole fixer upper). I got on the scaffolding and attempted to hold the window above my head and screw it in. After multiple attempts (I had a limited amount of time off of work so I really needed to push it, and of course wanting the bathroom and all it's amenities back) of trying to screw in the new window, I realized I could not do this from the outside, I just don't have the strength, (and I am going to have all the windows changed out even the beloved pocket windows later this year professionally when the loan comes through). So I dismantled part of that creekside inside wall that I just rebuilt (I know this is incorrect, but I had no choice but to put the window in this way) and screwed the window to it and put it back together. By this time I noticed that I was in a bit of pain, I called the doc and they suggested I go to Urgent Care. I found out I broke T11 and T12, (a compound fracture) (slight) and messed up my ribs, they still can't tell me what's going on with the ribs. When did this happen? Sometime during my brief relationship with the scaffolding apparently. Anyway, I had to take a little bit of time off for the remod. Which is good as it gives you more time to think things through flat on your back. I had one of my Elders say " you know your not a spring chicken anymore". I now realize this (very hard to admit defeat), but I just didn't really have a viable choice in the matter due a lack of funds. Now, to get to the flooring. Part of the support beams were rotted, so I replaced those and added additional support (overkill at it’s best). I put a sheet of plywood on top of half of the floor while the other half of the bathroom boards flooring ( the one closest to the dirt ground underneath) was ok so I just put 1 sheet of plywood on top of that. (Just to reiterate,) The other side needs two sheets of plywood as none of those boards on top of the support beams were viable, so I removed them). The flooring I chose is the Smart Core Tile (snap flooring) in Glacier Marble. I was informed that I didn’t need any underlayment at the big box store but now that I’ve seen this video, I thought I should ask you. What do you think? I may add a shower for the Slipper soaker clawfoot tub later on, but for now it’s fine. I think I may need to put in some kind of step or two as my short legs are having a bit of a time maneuvering in and out of the tub. Any videos on that, steps for a tub? And high moisture drywall for the walls. TIA

When a large job fails, there are Licensed Pros that make the final decision of who is at fault. The license is called a CTI license. Certified Tile Institute a license very hard to qualify. An example in court was tile was actually explosing off the floor. The person with the CTI license gave the installer at fault. There was no expansion joints every 10 feet. Million were awarded to the customer. I learned from this person that worked at Dal Tile. You are right on the thickness of the flooring before tiling. Great teacher you are

Flooring measure guy for box store here. Seen thousands of floors and here is my opinion... LVP - Pros: affordable great product, practical and durable, easiest DIY flooring Cons: can't stand the feel and looks like plastic LAMINATE- Pros: affordable and looks/feels better than LVP. Ok for low moisture rooms in newer homes with flat floors Cons: worst durability some carpet lasts longer lol. If floors are uneven or ANY standing water will fall apart. The edges will guaranteed start to peel and de-laminate over a decade TILE (Ceramic/Porcelain) - Pros: best flooring for foyer/bathroom. Can last forever if over concrete or PROPERLY installed over wood subfloor, can make creative patterns Cons: alot of labor, cleaning grout, cold and hard, if installed over wood subfloor must have proper structure and installation technique or won't last. Sheet Vinyl (aka linoleum) - Pros: cheap and durable, waterproof, good for bathrooms make sure you caulk around the tub especially if you have particleboard subfloor. Cons:not a premium product, people think it's dated. Hard to DIY Engineered Wood- Pros: looks beautiful and is much cheaper than solid wood. Comes in click lock easy DIY install Cons:scratches easily and cannot be refinished. Not good for house with kids or large dogs SOLID WOOD 3/4" - Pros:looks beautiful and can last over 100 years. Adds a solid feel but not as hard on feet and knees as tile Cons:high maintenance, expensive, potential squeaks, adding a 3/4" thick floor to an existing house can be a bit tricky with the added thickness. If you have a particleboard substrate it won't hold the flooring nails CARPET - Back in the 80s-90s carpet was much better quality (nylon). 90% of people these days buy polyester carpet because nylon is double the cost. I'd avoid a solid light color carpet in favor of a dark multi color to hide the stains. Personally this is the one flooring I would buy cheaper. For most people expensive carpet is not worth it unless you have no kids and pets and you just built or bought your dream home.

We had an awful time of getting the hardwood and glue off the concrete when we did our half bath, and definitely know removing the other rooms(kitchen and entryway) are just too much for us to attempt, unless we can prepare and just lay a new floor over what’s there. I think you gave us some great information, just want to know if you might add anything different to prepare the surface on the wood, different than what you mentioned? Thank you so much! I am enthralled with your teaching advice. I am in a rental slightly more than a studio ( tiny 1 bedroom/1bath ) apartment with horrid pink 4" tile on bathroom walls and shower/tub. The 1" Mosaic type on the floor. 76" one way, 61" the other, a decent sized window and door on the long ends. 3 piece. My partner, an amputee, needed grab/assist bars, shower chair and such to shower properly. His Wchair just fits between the vanity and (very old metal) tub. I want to rip out the tile work, and make sure it's up to par instead of 1950-60. I absolutely loved that " whole bathroom a shower" video. Even if it we're just one color/type of coverage, to have that room for movement!! You inspire me! 😊

Transitions between flooring materials have always been my nemesis - tiling a bathroom next to a carpeted hallway, or removing some continuous hardwood (water damaged) and tiling in a bathroom and trying to make it stable and attractive. I've gone for those metal transition strips like you'd mentioned (hooray!), using the tile-to-carpet ( _|\ ) and tile-to-hardwood ( __| ) styles. Getting the carpet cut back just enough and secured under it was a challenge... a couple 70lb packs of tile made a good carpet stretcher though! And glad I didn't grout next to the hardwood for the other bathroom. Planning on maybe some color-matched(ish) caulking where I had to cut back the hardwood to the transition. I was careful and spent a long time sanding to try for a straight edge but hard to do perfectly. Having a targeted discussion on those transitions helps - it always seems to not be included in people's demonstration videos and is difficult to stumble across the right video!

When you talk about keeping the plywood clean for tile, in the case of plywood and even a self leveling cement, if it is already dirty from paint and Plaster, is it okay to just give it a quick sand and clean, in order to insure it will make a good bond with the mortar?

Good morning Jeff, We are planning on redoing all the flooring in our home. We have tile in all but the three bedrooms. We will replace the bedrooms with new carpet. All the tile we want to go with something that as much like bare polished concrete as possible. To have them polished we were quoted $6.50 sqft & 24"X24" tile & carpet $23K. Vinyl over tile $13K. The house in approx 1700sqft. Help with ideas to save money. We really want the concrete modern look.

At the end you make it clear to do the floor last on non-cement. What about when doing vinyl on cement? I'm putting a kitchenette and bath in my basement. Do I put the cabinets and vanity on the cement - before putting down vinyl flooring? If so, should I put something between the cement and the bottom edge of the cabinets - I don't want moisture getting sucked into the wood of the cabinets. I love your videos! Great job of being informative, quick w/ no fluff, entertaining and engaging!

Hey Jeff, you are a rock star, thanks for all the great content! I plan on renovating our main level floor, but I have a third sub-floor type in this 1955 home. We have a wood sub floor with diagonal planks over dimensional lumber joists. We plan on going the vinyl plank route, which means plywood screwed to these planks, but I've found mixed instructions on how to do this right. It appears that my plan should be to remove the skinny oak board flooring, then eliminate any squeaks in the sub-floor boards with screws, then lay plywood on top (not really sure on the thickness required) for a smooth base, and then only screw the plywood to the wooden planks and not into the floor joists. Is that last step correct? Just seems weird to only screw to the planks, but some of the science makes sense with allowing the wooden slats to expand and contract. Everything on top of the plywood, you've covered which I greatly appreciate. Thanks for your help!

If you have some dips in your slab and you want to address them before covering your slab with a vapor barrier and OSB substrate. Use floor leveling compound. You don't have to "skim coat" your entire floor, you can just fill spots as needed. They come in 40-50lb bags and generally one bag is twice as much as you'll need to address those dips.

Thank you for all the fantastic videos Jeff. I appreciate your ability to keep it real and down to earth with all your tips and suggestions for us DIYers. My question is, how to fix a 2nd floor subfloor that that has 2 weak spots (1 in each bedroom) that cover about a 4 sq ft space just as you walk into the bedrooms. Weirdly, both spots are right where there are ceiling fans on the floor living room area. I've pulled all the carpeting in the bedrooms to prepare to put down hardwood flooring but afraid to start laying anything back down until I fix those two spots so the room doesn't shake when you walk into them. I put a ball on the floor and it rolls toward those spots in both rooms (so, yeah... definitely sagging a bit). The downstairs living room has wood paneling on the ceiling. So, I'm wondering if this can be repaired from above (or from the 2nd floor), or if I have to pull down some paneling to get to it from below. Hard to tell until I cut into the floor... very nervous about doing that (probably because I haven't done it before). Thanks for any tips or recommendations.

For electrical and plumbing and basically everything because it's considered to be an addition to your hone so property tax has ro go up so u must pull an addition or renovation permit. If plumbing is already completed then u don't beed a permit for that. If the electric is completed you don't need a permit for that but before you close The walls up, call for inspection and after completion so they can assess how much more to valuate your hone and increase the taxes.

I am a painter and have been doing new construction for over 40 years and I always paint base after the floors are done. The base is installed after flooring. Then the floor is covered with rosin paper. Then I tape the floor with blue tape or frog tape then I patch caulk sand and paint base. I have never seen the tile guys lay tile on plywood. The usual method is floated with cement then tiled. Or sometimes they lay hardy backer then tile. But that's California may be different where you are.

Hi Katie, if your subfloor is screwed down it will help. if it is old and soft then consider adding a layer of 3/8 plywood with screws. i did a video about that. the other option is to install the vinyl plank in the opposite direction of the joists. that will help to keep the joints together and no you don't need another underlay, the one that comes on the floor will be fine. as long as your subfloor is 5/8 you should be ok. Cheers!

What do you do if the vinyl specifies no underlay, but the floor is over a crawl space and needs a vapor barrier? Would you just have to buy the thinnest layer you can find? Or would a different vinyl need to be purchased in this case?

@@aleksvlad2 Just remember if you're buying vinyl plank it's waterproof. If you're worried about moisture still you can just buy thin layer of poly from your hardware store.
