I normally prune my Fuyu tree every two years or as needed to build the tree structure. I do not harvest by cutting the tree's woody branches because I want to preserve the buds on them for the next spring. Thanks for the video.

I have persimmon tree also. And you really have to support the branches when it’s fruiting because the branches are so small and the fruits are so heavy. I usually harvest my persimmons when all the leaves are almost dry because I found it more sweeter and juicier. That was a big harvest.

Yeah I do support the heavy branches 👍🏻 My husband is so impatient with persimmons he wants me to harvest as soon as the colour changes lol I always wanted to harvest after the tree drops all its leaves but he is so persistent I eventually give up🤷‍♀️

Deep T, thank you! If your persimmon tree is not irregularly shaped like mine, there is no need to prune it since persimmon tree bears fruit on the older wood. If you prune it now, the new growth will not grow fruit next year. I use Jobe’s organic fruit and citrus fertilizer spikes for all my fruit trees.

HI, do you have the video or if you could shortly explain please, how did you pot the plant, I want to plant it outside, but naturally the soil here is mostly sand and clay, I know that loam is the best. You have a good persimmon tree.. Can you explain the Winter care after planting for the first couple of years. I live in zone 6b/ 7 and just bought these trees. I heard we need to be careful with first winter.

Thank you so much. I planted mine as a bare root tree during November 2017 and wrapped the stem with burlap and tied it so the cold weather doesn’t harm the trunk. The tree produced exactly 2 persimmons the next season and eventually grew some branches. The following winter I didn’t do anything to protect the tree . Mine is zone 7b. If you’re in a zone colder, I would suggest you to wrap with burlap for two or three winters consequently until it establishes itself well enough. Burlap works great but hard to find nice thick ones. If you don’t find thick burlap, you can always use the basmati rice bags from Costco. The bags are made of nice thick burlap. Just cut the into wide strips and roll it around the trunk.

There is a four pointed fruit in your video near the small green pole at 1:54. I just planted a giant fuyu last week. I have been harvesting my hachiya for two years now, it is a heavy bearer. I have heard people talk about fruit drop, fortunately I have not experienced that thus far.

Yeah I had several three pointed and four pointed fruit like that in the tree especially that particular year. Not sure why 😀 Great to know about your hachiya persimmon’s performance. I wish I had space for two persimmons.

Yes I know why your fruit is small and bitter. When you bought the tree, you got a grafted plant meaning, the bottom rooted portion is a different type that’s tolerant to your climate and the top portion is attached few inches above the rooted portion. You can very well see the attachment if you have other fruit trees in your garden. Just go out and check the tree trunk in the base of any fruit tree. So in your case , when the fruit tree died, you chopped it and whatever grew back is from the rootstock. Usually the plants used for rootstock doesn’t produce superior fruit but they use it because it can handle the temperatures very well. I hope you understand what I’m saying. Right now you can only remove the entire tree ( uproot it ) and plant another grafted tree in that place.

Jenny I don’t prune it unless its causing or seems to be causing damage to the tree. Here I had no choice but to prune it since the branch was literally growing in a U shape. We love persimmons and many people I know love persimmons. Persimmons are not ready for harvest yet. Planning to harvest during November month once all the fruit turns orange in color. There are two types of persimmons. This variety of persimmon in this video is fuyu persimmon which can be eaten like an apple. No need to dry it. There’s another type of astringent persimmon which should be ripe before eating. You can also remove the peels and dry the persimmons for long time storage.

My persimmon trees drops it's fruit too. It's a natural part of a persimmon tree, especially when it's young. Give your tree one or two more years, and I'll bet you'll have a better harvest. Good luck!

That’s a lot of fruit for a small tree. I like to grow but I live up North East zone 6b it’s too cold for Fuyu. I have Ichi-Ki-Kei-jiro I got from StarkBro’s it’s survive last winter but it’s still small.

My neighbour lost his apple tree thrice so far due to wet feet and his blueberries never ripen completely, Fig dies back and grows to the same height every year coz all these are planted in an area where water pools when it rains. I too would agree with the above comment that almost all the fruit species hates wet feet.

Hi Valli, no mine is a regular persimmon only. I bought it from stark bros online nursery and mine is a grafted tree. I was thinking Persimmon tree grow very slow compared to other fruit trees. I planted it 6 years ago and it is still around 6 ft tall.

Fall is when the tree gets ready to go dormant. That’s when the tree doesn’t focus on top growth. When you plant your fruit trees during fall, it can focus establishing good root system so that during the next spring , you will have a great top growth and flowers.

Seed grown persimmon tree takes 3 to 5 years to fruit and it’s worth the wait , that’s what google says. I personally don’t have experience growing persimmon tree from seed because I have limited growing space . If you have more space, you can try growing one from seed and one store bought grafted persimmon tree and see how different both are .

Hi Angela, Not sure if your tree is in ground or in pot, but it’s better to grow in ground in a place where it gets plenty of direct sunlight . Fuyu trees doesn’t like to be in too much water logging area . I don’t prune my Fuyu persimmon. I use Jobe’s organic Fruit and citrus fertilizer spike during April month. Just bury the fertilizer spike in the soil near the tree.

Hi Tahera, most of the Asian persimmon varieties grow in zone 6 to 9 But American native persimmons can grow very well in zone 5 because they are more cold hardy than Asian persimmons. But recently I read that Saijo persimmon tree grows well in zone 5 .If you plant it in a full sunny area in your garden, I think Saijo persimmon would work well in your zone.

Astringent means, you can’t eat the fruit before it is ripe. I have explained in the video about that too. My persimmon is non astringent type which means I can harvest the fruit and eat it before it is completely ripe.

My tree produces fruit without seeds. Only Native American persimmon varieties can grow true to the seed. Seeds from grafted trees will not give you exactly the same fruit you want.

Persimmon trees are cold-hardy and can tolerate temperatures of -25°F. If you’re in a place where the temperatures get below-25 degrees Fahrenheit, then it’s not recommended to plant a persimmon tree in the ground.
