After growing and trying so many different fruits over the years, I can confidently say that the persimmon is the tastiest, but also one of the most reliable fruiting plants you can grow in a temperate or sub tropical climate. Here's why I think you should grow a persimmon tree and which tree to choose.

I have 2 American Persimmon trees I planted 35 years ago there around 70 ft tall today. Made persimmon jam from the fruit 2 months ago. I like to just pick them from the ground and eat. I also have 50-60 seeds getting ready to plant in the spring, going to plant them all around my 15 acres.

I live in Korea . in southern part of Korea, in fall season over hundred years of old persimmon trees with tons of red persimmons that looks like catching fire. in time it's even more beautiful then autumn leaves. Two weeks ago I found an old persimmon tree . Fruit size is small that it's not commercial type. But it's so delicious. I am going to graft it coming spring.

Persimmons are so delicious. I think people get put off by the fact that they look like wonky tomatoes. That's how I felt until I finally tried one. Super excited to learn that I could grow this in Montreal (zone 5a)

I planted fuyu trees every year for 15 years. Now I have 30. I sold all the fruit took the money and ordered 200 more trees. We joke that only Asians and Indians know what they are and make terrible customers because they are always trying to haggle. I hope to have 400 trees one day for my children. They are wonderful trees and the fruit is spectacular

Persimmons are just so easy. Fruits are consistent. Hardly any disease. I do want to find a good american variety. Currently i have a hybrid, fuyus, and hiyachi. As a kid had an american persimmon tree in the side yard of the house i grew up in. They were a small variety… about a size of a large blueberry. But when ripe tasted really nice.

Unfortunately, store bought fruit is all about transportability and convenience. It takes a bit of knowledge and patience to eat persimmons at peak ripeness and most people don't have the attention span. As you mention, these are easy to grow and I'm glad you're helping us learn.

It was supposed to be a Yates but i think they are giving me a meader persimmon instead. I assume because it's cold hardiness down to zone 4 where iowa is mostly zone 5. I just started my orchard to include a John Rick / Prairie Star. I’ve heard conflicting things about needing a male tree since it’s an American persimmon. The website I bought it (OGW) from says it’s self-fertile. I’ve seen videos saying not to add a male tree because without one it will grow seedless fruit, but with one the fruit will be seeded. I have also seen videos saying the fruit will be superior and more abundant with a male. Please advise.
@RossRaddi
@RossRaddi Жыл бұрын
A male just helps with pollination. You'll get more fruits that way. Without a male you may get seedless fruit, but that depends on the variety. I'm not familiar with John Rick, but it should fruit without a male.

@caveman7608
@caveman7608 2 жыл бұрын
American persimmons are. You need male And female in order to produce fruit. The Asian persimmons are self to semi self fertile. Also know that if you plant certain persimmons together then it will make a persimmon that is normally seedless have seeds. I can’t remember what types do this. Anyway that’s my understanding, I’m new to this.
@danielsmith336

With American persimmons it depends on the chromosome count. 60 chromosome American persimmons require pollination to set fruit. 90 chromosome American persimmons will set seedless fruit without being pollinated.
