Thank you advocating for sports fishing. What can we do as recreational anglers to promote the opening of fisheries? To be frank, for someone like me living in the lower mainland it’s almost easier to just go south of the border to fish as I feel like they have so many more opportunities in Washington state. Additionally, they have tied sport fishing like razor clams to local economies. How can we promote that here in BC?

Thanks Gary! This year's opening is probably the best scenario you can ask for. Those closures in September and October for Interior Fraser River steelhead and coho are for all sectors and DFO has to implement those closures because of the Species at Risk Act. My only wish is that we always have these opening dates fixed instead of having them announced in the last minute. This way people can plan ahead of time, the community can actually spend time delivering the information to anglers, provide some education etc. Groups like the Sport Fishing Advisory Committee, BC Wildlife Federation are already emphasizing the economic impacts of these fisheries to the federal government. I guess what everyone else can do is to let your local MP know about this.

I agree with your comment about surfacing.... they just won't bite😂. A few years back, Pinks, surfacing all around us but would not bite anything. We could have just bonked them while they were swimming😂😂. Thanks Rod, lots of good advice.

Great managment, close spin casting for recreational but open netting for First Nation. Fair and logical! lol

No, those conservation management measures and closures in September and October apply to everyone under the species at risk act, including all First Nations’ fisheries.

Thanks for the video Rod. If I'm fishing off the bottom in the tidal zone, would using shrimp/prawns instead of roe work for Coho?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 7 күн бұрын
It could work, but roe definitely is the preferred bait. Even though it is designated as "tidal", it's already upstream from the estuary and these fish behave differently than when they are in the ocean.

WHat an informative video and as always I have a couple questions: If I am fishing at derby reach or Glen valley park, what tide chart should I follow New West or Pt Atkinson) and how many hours do I need to add or subtract. ALso Can I use buzz bombs if I am fishing from ashore. And for the vedder how to I know my bait is at the right depth, what do I need to look for?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 23 күн бұрын
I use the Vancouver tide chart (www.dairiki.org/tides/daily.php/van) and usually add one to three hours to it depending on which part of the Fraser I am fishing at. The difference is also not exact, depending on the strength of the tide. For a more accurate reference, go to wateroffice.ec.gc.ca/search/real_time_e.html and do a search for the water level on the Fraser River in Mission. You'll be able to see the exact times when the water is rising and dropping. You can then use that graph and match it with the tide chart in Vancouver, to figure out the time difference between the two points. Buzz Bomb might work if you fish closer to the mouth of the Fraser. You're better off using spoons and spinners as most of the fish are going to closer to shore in the shallower water.

Hello Rod!, I have two questions to ask. - Do you know which of the arms would provide a better catch ratio out of the three, during the incoming tides? - Would a 9’0 MH casting rod rated 12-50 lbs work fine? Thank you for your video!
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 21 күн бұрын
They all produce, just depends on if schools of fish are moving through. I've done better at North Arm, but I know others have done well at South Arm, so that's a difficult question to answer. 12-50lb? or 12-20? It'd be fine, for bait fishing.

@ Thank you Rod, Have you ever tried the middle arm (yvr/oval area) for salmon and was successful?

For the bottom setup, wont the roe and swivel eventually sink and just lay on the bottom? Is a little corky on the hook necessary to keep it floating above bottom? And lures im assuming you dont let it sink long? Isnt fraser like 30-200ft? And how do you cast a 3 way swivel setup without all the lines helicoptering and tangling?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 23 күн бұрын
Once the weight is on the bottom and the line is tightened up, the swivel should sit a foot or two off the bottom because of the angle of the line. Adding the tidal current to the equation, the baited hook should be off the bottom all the time. The water you're fishing in is perhaps 10 o 30ft deep, close to shore. There is a chance for the 3-way swivel to tangle up the lines for sure. I find that holding your line back just before the weight hits the water when casting can reduce that chance.

New to salmon fishing. Looking forward to this opportunity cause I only have a tidal water fishing license! In general, is it harder to get bites in the tidal fraser portion compared to say the vedder river?

Hello Rod! Thank you again for your videos! Im excited to try for the 1st time to fish for Coho in the fraser! 2 questions if you dont mind: -I am planning to bring my zodiac boat to the river.... do you know if this is allowed? - When you say the peek of the tide, does that mean, when the water level is at it highest? For example, I can see that the High tide is 6:00am but int he graph show that the higher level will be 10am and then drop down. 10am is the peek? Thank you in advance for your time! :D
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 23 күн бұрын
I don't see why the zodiac wouldn't be allowed? That said, I have very little boating experience on the Fraser so others would have to help you out with that. And that's correct with the tide interpretation. Just keep in mind that the tide schedule for Mission, Port Mann, etc are a bit delayed from the Vancouver times.

I can't believe I didn't think about the fact that I can now fish for COHO from my KAYAK on the Fraser now! Thanks for the idea lol, I'll need to find some slow areas but I'm guessing the same calm areas that are good for kayaking are also good for fish swimming up river? Good luck on the zodiac!

For the Tidal Fraser River, you are allowed to use rigs that are designed to catch two fish at once, so basically two baited hooks on the line.

There will be a bait ban in effect for the non-tidal portion of the Fraser River when salmon opens in that sections. There isn't a bait ban for the tidal portion.
