this was insanely education and interesting! LOVED THIS. so many clips of wisdom. mu favorite has to be not doing something that emulates damage in a scientific setting.

Skin is often likened to a brick wall, with skin cells acting as bricks and ceramides, a type of lipid molecule, serving as the mortar holding everything together. When this protective layer is compromised due to damage or inflammation, moisture can escape, and irritants can penetrate, leading to various skin issues like dryness, sensitivity, or inflammation. However, while many attribute these problems to a phenomenon known as Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL), I propose a different perspective. Instead of just water loss, I believe the primary issue is Transepidermal Fat Loss (TEFL), where the essential fats crucial for maintaining skin integrity are depleted, akin to the mortar between the bricks being eroded. In this view, every time we subject our skin to harsh conditions like hot showers or aggressive cleansing with soaps, we're essentially washing away these vital fats, leaving our skin vulnerable. Without an adequate lipid barrier, moisture escapes more easily, exacerbating dryness, while harmful bacteria find it easier to colonize, leading to inflammation. To address this, it's crucial to replenish these lost fats. Instead of water-based moisturizers, which only offer temporary relief, opting for saturated animal fats or butter can effectively nourish the skin and restore its lipid barrier. Additionally, using cleansers containing saturated animal fats like sodium tallowate can help maintain skin health while avoiding further damage. By shifting our focus from mere water loss to the broader concept of fat loss, we can better understand and address common skin issues. Incorporating this perspective into skincare routines, such as washing with distilled water and moisturizing with a watered-down melted butter, may offer a more sustainable approach to maintaining healthy, resilient skin.

Yea but the most challenging thing is Rosacea flushing causes epidermal waterloss and some have very oily yet dry skin at the same time. So you could still epidermal waterloss even with oily skin

Is TEWL temporary after microneedling?

What are your thoughts on moisturizer that has sunscreen in it already? I love the liquid gold from stratia but find I need a touch more moisture. To reduce number of products I add on top of the LG, I bought a combo moisturizer with sunscreen. Now I read that’s not adequate. 🤨 I’m struggling to find a sunscreen that doesn’t leave a greasy film. This combo moisturizer/sunscreen I have seems to work well with my other products, but if it’s not effective for sun protection it’s useless right?

Hi Penny. Using a moisturizer with sunscreen can be a great way to tackle two steps in one. We would recommend using a proper amount of the product to ensure that you receive the full spf benefits. 2 finger lengths of product is a good approximate. The most important thing with sunscreen is: pick one you'll actually use. While high SPF broad-spectrum sunscreens are best, it's much better to use an SPF 15 that you really do wear every day over an SPF 50 that's too greasy and you always skip. There are lots of newer facial sunscreens that absorb quickly and don't feel heavy, so try a few until you find one that can fit easily into your daily routine. Ramon (GlowbyRamon) on YT would be a great resource as he provides in depth sunscreen reviews and recommendations if you are looking for a new sunscreen for your skincare routine. 🤗🤗
