In reality, many gladiators survived defeat if they were judged to have fought well and earned the favour of the crowd. This happened much more often than the gladiator being killed. They would simply raise their forefinger to ask for mercy. Crying or begging probably wouldn't have helped his cause. Edit : I'm getting a lot of responses saying that gladiators were rarely killed because they were valuable. That's true. It doesn't invalidate my point however as their value was linked to their success\popularity. My initial response was strictly in relation to how gladiators faced defeat and the possibility of death

I recommend to anyone interested in this to learn more about gladiatorial combat. I see lots of people saying this, but just as many denying for some reason. Most fights were not to the death and if they were it was usually pre-planned and ticket prices were increased. Makes sense when you think how some gladiators had multiple losses on their record. Most trained and lived together as well, so killing each other wasn't on the top of the list. If they were to get injured though, which was likely, they would get the best medical care Rome had to offer. Slaves, and criminals actually had the right to buy their freedom back as well, with most who did returning back to the arena.

Gladiatorial fights were waaay closer to the WWE than you might think, there were storylines and surprises. Most fights were just done until someone was on the ground and gladiators were trained to aim for non lethal blows, training a gladiator was expensive after all, even the slave ones. The crowd would almost always chant micio (Mercy!). In the golden days of the empire gladiatorial fights were a wwe show sandwitched between some convoluted hunting shows inside the arena of exotic animals, and military excersices. The actual fights to the death: the executions of criminals, christians, etc, were done relatively quietly during break time, which was just throwing them unarmed against beasts or well equipped executioners. Watching an underfed prisoner get mauled by a tiger gets old fast so they weren't as popular.

No, that is a bullshit lie a historian made up. It was typical for them to die when the crowd said they died. Not when the Sponsor could not afford to pay for the games in the first place. A historian looked up prices, and noticed that you paid moree if the gladiator died versus if they lived through the match. This makes sense because the gladiator who is dead needs replaced. But the idea that they could not afford gladiators is wrong. In fact, the Twelve Caesars specifically mentions how Julius Caesar recycled gladiators once the crowd lost favor with them and they would be executed by their opponents. This is because the crowd, not the sponsor who hosted the game like the Emperor, usually were deciding who lived and died. Countless gladiators died, and other historians have even proven this with records, not Revisionist theories that get spouted to discredit Hollywood, and any History with Glory or Bloodshed involved, a rationalist Historians worst enemy.

I love how Maximus recognized the helmet's worthlessness as a defensive tool, and immediately started striking the "Mask" part of it with his shield at every opportunity. It was designed to be pulled over the face and lacks any protection for the jaw, and everything directly behind the mask. It was like ringing a bell. The other gladiator's face is completely deleted by the time the fight is over from having that stupid mask on. It's details like this, that only a seasoned soldier would look for that makes Maximus so dangerous and makes the movie so great. A lesser fight would have had Maximus use some stupid bullshit like making him run into a wall to defeat him.

Regarding the comments on Tigris spitting blood after taking the foot stab..Maximus landed several blows to his helmet (the first being with shield) that almost peeled back the face of Tigris helmet. The helmet was more ornamental, basically having a metal box around the head. Maximus ,being the strategist that he is, knew this and continued to focus on that particular area. Tigris eventually gave in to serious concussion and head trauma. EDIT: Blood probably came from having teeth knocked out.

Fair enough but Maximus was lying on the flat of his back with a full grown dead tiger laying on him. A one armed, vertical swing with no wind up shouldn't have done anything to him, ornamental helmet or not. So, unless Ant man went back into time and gave Maximus Captain America's shield, the blow shouldn't have exploded his head like a watermelon. It wasn't a morning star he got him with and he wasn't fighting glass Joe either. Earlier strikes mentioned didn't appear to make him concussed and off balance during the rest of the fight. Also, the blood probably would of shown below his helmet sooner if so. I love this flick as much as rest but let's be real, the plot armor turned invincible for certain parts of that fight. How about the tiger not getting it's teeth into Maximus' exposed neck immediately or even knocking him down? That is how they hunt. Just the force from that blindsided attack would flatten practically everyone. Not to mention the shield shrug to get the tiger off of him like he was swatting away a fly, even though it was twice his size, speed, and 5x strength (on his back). Anywho. I am done. Still love watching the fight.

No...the vast vast vast majority of gladiatorial combat was for entertainment, they were trained combatants. That training takes time and a good chunk of money, they were too expensive to just slaughter every single bout. @@pokemonitishere202 Quote: "Almost 90% of the time tiger used to win in those Colosseum fights." Typical tiger fanboy lie. Tigers are afraid of lions. Every time a lion and a tiger fight, the tiger usually runs away like the coward that it is. The Romans were not cowards, they stood for bravery, strength and confidence.

@@KilluhCrocz half is dummy for stabbing, but when it zooms out its definitely a real tiger. Slow down when it "pounces" on him and takes him to the ground, its definitely going for a treat in his hand and following the hand all the way to the ground. It may even be a stunt double animal trainer.
