What I love about this scene is that Hector was fully aware the war wasn’t about Helen, he knew that it was merely a pretext for a war of aggression. Agamemnon confirms this several times in secret, and Hector earlier says something along the lines of “Do you think Agamemnon cares about his brother’s marriage? They’ve come for what’s ours.” Hector was perceptive enough to know that Paris’ offer was futile, and acceptance of it was disingenuous. Paris, being naive, desperate and a romantic idealist, did not understand the undercurrents at play, just as he similarly didn’t possess the pragmatism, foresight and/or political sense to know that an affair with Helen would be disastrous. Knowing the duel was meaningless, Hector, whilst being shown to momentarily wrestle with the decision, ultimately saves his brother, knowing full well the battle was going to take place regardless.

@@thenaberius6081actually considering the story behind Agamennon's rise to power. Menelaus was a very capable fighter he spent the majority of his life fighting alongside his brother for control of Greece. There was no way Paris would outlast Menelaus in stamina, especially considering Menelaus gave himself a greater edge by getting rid of his shield. This means he is using less energy on carrying a heavy shield and can focus more power on his attack. Paris shield was too big and definitely heavy. He should have been using the shield the Apollon guard used because it has protection and is lighter, more suited to his style of fighting. Paris is definitely quicker and his smaller size gives him a better advantage to avoid telegraphing his attacks as well as presenting a better defensive stance. Plus clearly he was afraid causing him to hesitate lowering his speed of his attacks. I have trained with the 6th legion Ferreta and I am roughly the same size as Paris and fought people as big as Menelaus. What I found out is the best method to fight those type of scenarios is a measured retreat, not outlasting your opponent because that rarely happens but rather let them have the full attack advantage against your shield but using your shield offensively by smacking it against their shield or to taunt them a bit. While their attacking, you wait for the right moment and one thrust straight threw gives you the victory. If your attack fails, you then return to a defensive stance and wait for the next opportunity.

According to the original Greek story, Paris and Menelaus never fought. Menelaus wasn't kill in the Trojan war, he live throughout the siege and capture of the city. He also took Helen back.
@slasher19necroslayer422 ай бұрын
Technically Paris offers Menelaus a fair fight. Yet when the time comes, Paris didn’t came. Yeah, he didn’t come to fight for Helen, which he offered to Menelaus.

Exactly the comment i was looking for! Menelaus easily defeats Paris. Before Menelaus can kill him, Apphrodite sweeps him away into the city walls. And then, while the Greeks and Trojans squabble over the duel's winner, Athena inspires the Trojan Pandarus to shoot Menelaus with his bow and arrow. However, Athena never intended for Menelaus to die, and she protects him from the arrow of Pandarus. Menelaus is wounded in the abdomen, and the fighting resumes. **Fun fact: According to the Roman scholar and author Hyginus, Menelaus ended up being one of the Greek soldiers that was stashed inside the Trojan horse. **Extra fun fact: During the Trojan horse siege Menelaus kills Deiphobus, who later married Helen after Paris' death

That arrogant Paris exposed his people and his town to destruction because of his reckless actions. Imagine a man inviting you to a table of peace and then you betray him. The disturbing thing is that all the brave ones were killed while he survived.

Paris was a brat and a coward that caused the war. Hector was wrong to stepped in (thou intention was just). They had a verbal agreement to let the two fight. So Troy fell because of her princes
@foxnfire63882 ай бұрын
Uh did you miss the part where they planned to attack Troy regardless of the outcome? Also Hector was awesome in this scene as he should always prioritize family over country and made it clear threat he better turn around or hes getting stabbed. Definitely the honor part is that lost them. Even Achilles showed up Hector’s dad or wife should have secretly had the archers massacre him right there. This is WAR and Hector is FAMILY so who CARES about your enemy’s stupid “honor”? That scene was always ridiculous to me.
@joelhodges63672 ай бұрын
Hector is the ultimate good in all ways in this film, his brother signed up for something he couldnt back up and pussed out hard. Hector couldnt let his groveling brother die at his feet, none of it was his choice other than to honor an enemy or save his brother and family will always save a brother who was wrong over an invading enemy
@generalgrievous37712 ай бұрын
so tell me. Would you let someone kill your brother in front of your feet? Hector did everything right there. They even planned to attack troy, no matter the outcome so it changed nothing
@yahiakhaled56482 ай бұрын
He was a brat I will not argue with you there but Hector was smart enough to realise King Agamemnon he was just taking this as an excuse to try and invade Troy That's first second thing is say what you want to say if you were in his position what would you do your brother is losing in a battle bruised and bleeding and he crawls on his knees and grap you my friend I know this is wrong my dad's Brotherly Love it's Instinct hell you're going to step up for your brother I am a dry person naturally I'm a driver person but if my brother is it's getting beat up bleeding and runs to me for my protection the hell with this shit I will raise hell before anyone you could even lay a finger on him

I feel like Orlando Bloom got the lead role in Kingdom of Heaven as compensation. Here he is a coward and a weak swordsman, and in the other film he is a brave and excellent warrior. And what is also interesting is that Brendan Gleeson also appears there and he is the dishonest, cowardly character there.

Imagine starting a full war because your son stole someone's wife then puss'd out in a one on one fight afterwards. Yikes
@mariaschukariova34388 күн бұрын
It's unfair that Paris survives in the end, causing so much grief. But even if Paris died in this scene, Agamemnon would ask for Troyan army and territory (as he actually did) and war would happen anyway. It's just extremely unhonorable to escape death like this in those times. And the first ones to be unhappy about this would be Troyan soldiers, who wouldn't respect Paris
