*EDIT*
My friend Andre had let me know there are a couple of minor mistakes with this video that I'm correcting.
9:37 - Chord is actually an Em13 (0,x,0,0,2,x) which is very similar sounding to a Gmaj7#11
10:15 - When repeated, this chord is actually a Cmaj7 (3,3,2,4,x,x) with an open high E pedal point.

Allan Holdsworth - Texas Lesson & Tutorial
Hi all! About time I got to a new video. This one is a pretty easy one over all. Another good place to start if you want to start to try some Allan songs. Not the easiest, but easy for a normal tune of his.
While editing this video I feel that next time I'm going to try to do a better job talking. Im not a professional broadcaster but there were quite a few things that irritated myself haha, so I hope you can get past it and watch the video for the voicings and information! Sorry!
Some of you also might take some issue with some of the chord names. I figured I would add I did not take the bass note into consideration and only focus on the chords. I also tried to give the chord the most straightforward name I can, even if functionally it might not be correct.
Also, let me know what other songs you would like to see! For those that do not know, I have written a book that lists and arranges chords used by Allan. In doing that I have transcribed over 50 of his tunes.
Check out my book here:

If you really dig these videos, drop me a like or a subscribe. Thanks!

From an Italian interview in 2000: Q: There is an unusually heavy riff at the beginning of "Texas", the only one - are you moving away from this kind of thing or is it just a period? The whole album is actually less rock. AH: I wrote that piece for a demonstration of instruments in my friend's music store in Texas. At the beginning of the solo I started deliberately with a blues style, Texan (imitates Texan slang), a playing, like ZZ Top. [Machine back translated]

Thank you! Its surprisingly simple. A lot of times its easier to learn the tune and then see if you can find those bits inside the solo section. I think after this there may only be one or two songs solo section I dont know. The trio stuff is the hardest

Hi John, congrats for the beautiful work you are doin'! I'd like to tell you that the picture of what was supposedly AH's Texas chord symbols for the solo section is actually Letters of marque's chord symbols :) There's also a circled "L" on the right....Keep up the good work!!!

John, Great scholarship as usual. You and a rare group of others have added to the post-modern guitar literature that Allan gave us. Is the chord book available in paper form or just Kindle?

I've often wondered about the accompaniment on this tune when AH starts soloing. Sounds like a keyboard of some kind but is it really just AH playing a "rhythm" track?
@TurrigenousOfficial
@TurrigenousOfficial 4 жыл бұрын
You would be half right. It does sound like a keyboard because its a synth sound but played on a guitar. Allan used a midi guitar controller called the "Synthaxe" for his entire career since 1985. Its appeared on every album since, either as the main part of a song, or something in the background, intro or outro.

@@ElijahMendiola I agree! When I started this there were so many chords that I just said "Wow I never would have thought that! This is so cool!". From there it can inspire someone to write or do whatever with it.

@@TurrigenousOfficial absolutely , i always feel like im stuck on certain scales and i try and break away from them and find new ones , thats what lead me to this video , to try and find some far out of the box scale.i dont have as much understanding in chords as you but i can play pretty well. i feel like im in a box! its frustrating. im never short on good song ideas but im stuck only in how much knowledge i have in the instrument

LOL. I really try to explain without embarrassing myself cause you know way more than I do and I’ve been out playing jazz for a while, trying to get back. Your ears are much sharper than mine. I figure out jazz songs some by memory and some reading and check the record. So LL, I’m probably not right. I hear the chords as you played them and that scale popped to mind. So, I may be right I may be wrong. 😅

Jazz has a bit of a pattern and by that pattern I can deduce a major 2-5-1 and I hear minor a bit better but basically I’m out of practice.
