The Robes of the Order of the Garter

Hands down, the best portraits of all of the monarchs, including Elizabeth II, was always their garter robes portrait. She looked spectacular in those robes!

I’m very fond of the Caldor photo of the late Queen in her Knight of the Thistle robe outside in Scotland.

In 2006, the Queens Gallery at Buckingham Palace held an exhibit of the exquisite collections of George III and Queen Charlotte. Amongst the Da Vinci drawings, paintings of flora by Charlotte, outstanding architectural drawings by George III was the display of King George’s garter star. Studded with diamonds, bigger than I had imagined, the gem-encrusted star positively glowed in the display case. I’d seen picture of the garter star in books for years but the photographs were flat and lifeless compared to the garter star in the flesh. 3 dimensions puts the piece on a whole other level. Sorry to be late to the party. I somehow missed this at the time. If you search on KZbin you can find film of Queen Elizabeth II visiting Pope John in 1961. She is dressed in black with a tiara and veil and on her left arm she is wearing the Garter. I think that its the only time she wore the actual Garter. I think that its normally only men who wear the Garter, and of course they wear it on the leg below the knee. She looks amazing, every inch a Queen!

Thanks for your awesome video. I’ve always wondered what the red donut was on the robe. Oh, it’s a hat, never would have guess that. So, Princess Royale Anne and Queen Camilla are part of the Order, but not the current Princess of Wales, Catherine, nor Duchess of Edinburgh. Does someone need to die, for them to get in, or is it years of service? I think they are both tremendous, and I’d like for them to, ah, “be in”. And I’m glad Prince William is, but his brother, is not. Cheers!

You've neglected to mention the use if a black aigrette that was peculiar addition to the white ostrich plumes on the hat of the robes of the Prince of Wales. The last Prince of Wales to have this black aigrette was the future Edwars VIII / Duke of Windsor. Why did it stop ?

Are the greater and lesser Georges and garter stars returned to the order to be re used? I understand this is what happens with the Danish order of The Elephant. I cannot imagine even the wealthiest members can commission personal regalia in our more cost conscious times.

I like to imagine His Majesty grabbed his old mantle out of the wardrobe and popped it on and got in the coach.
