I think black was used as a medical symbol since it also represented death. Then in more modern times white replaced black for warfare issues. In the musket warfare era the white smoke from the black powder rifles rendered the battlefield visibility, European armies used dark and highly colored uniforms, shiny straps cross or one sided and huge hats to distinguish who is a friend who is a foe. I think in that time period field medics turned using white to be invisible in the crossfire not to be targeted. Then that tradition continued as the modern universal doctor, medic, nurse colors. Then I don't know why they now use the cyran/turquois together with white.

The Order is still the same order, which is called the Sovereign Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, Rhodes, and Malta or Sovereign Military Order of Malta for short. One of the most overlooked but in my opinion also the best catholic military order. Displaying bravery in battle and helping the poor and sick. What most people dont know, the order kept on fighting through the centuries, especially against the ottoman empire. Their core belief was always to fight for their faith both off and on the battlefield; however apart from their oaths to protect and care for the sick, their medical knowledge paled compared to the Muslims and Jews around them. This is why the lasting legacy of the Knights Hospitaliers is the paramedic and EMT service rather than the actual hospital itself.

weldonwin been decades since I elle played but my memory is that Paladins we’re allowed to use blades but didn’t have the full array of spells that Clerics did. So in regards to real world Hospitaliers and Templar’s would have been real world Paladins as they were essentially warrior-monks. And in the AD&D world Monks were their own class which didn’t use any armor, used only blunted weapons, had very few spells but had some hand to hand skills. So I guess...none of the above?

this is so interesting, my country's flag actually has the St'John cross on it, and they also protected our country from the turks in their invasion. Also during their time in Malta they have built our capital city taking the name of "Valletta" named after the Knight Hospitaller "Jean Parisot de Valette"

One of my personal dreams in life is to visit Malta. It has such a unique and rich history and is filled with natural beauty. All of western civilization is indebted to the Maltese people. Religious Military Orders were quintessencial to the formation of my country, Portugal, during the XII and XII centuries. Crusaders on route to the Holly Land assisted our first king, D. Afonso Henriques, on the successful siege of Lisbon against the Muslims, and even his father, Count D. Henrique of Burgundy, came to the Peninsula as a knight on Crusade. Various donations were given to orders such as the Templars and Hospitallers throughout Portugal, but also to other minor orders, such as the Avis, that would eventually give name to the second dinasty of Portuguese kings, when one of its grand masters became the king D. João I. Curious fact - which I hope K&G will bring up in the Templars episode - after the fatal order to exterminate the Knights Templar was given, and this order was virtually extinguished, king D. Dinis managed to "save" them and preserve it in the form of the newly established _Ordem_ _de_ _Cristo_ - or Order of Christ. Their symbol is well present in Portugal's golden age, in the sails of the ships that crossed the unknown oceans. It still exists in Portugal, and its Grand Master is the acting President of the Republic. Edit: Spain also has incredibly important orders of this sort to their own History, such as Santiago Order and Calatrava Order.

The entire middle east was conquered by european powers. The only ones who weren't conquered in any extended period of time was the turks who were occupied and saudi arabia. And wasn't the barbary states literally got destroyed by a few american ships when the states was just a 20+ year old country? So please, don't make this a game of who is mightier. The U.S destroyed afganistan because of 2000 people dead from a terrorists attack

The longest war, I think you meant the longest occupation. War was over years ago. Afganistan was occupied by american forces because just as trump said, the reason why the army is there is to prevent terrorist cells from forming because its better to kill them there than to have civilian americans be harmed back home. There was no peace to be made, just a return of american forces. Similarly to how the americans occupied the japanese and left them after some years except with the japanese, they were able to work with the americans and build a better country while the afganistanis wasted the chance.

A lover of such topics. Suggestions: 1. Can you include the battles they, the orders, took part in? 2. Can you give the whole story, from origins to either the end or legacy of said orders? 3. Like what @Eliphas suggested, hope you can also include smaller orders. This would help for in the film, "Kingdom of Heaven" for example, there were numerous orders there and it would be nice to know their origins as well. Keep up the good work on these videos. I live in Poznan, Poland. In my city the Hospitalliers recived land and small church from the local duke in year 1187 AD. They also build there a hospital which still exists and is run by them till today. First both the church and hospital were outside city walls so the church was named: "The Church of Saint John of Jerusalem outside the walls". Later when city grew that dictrict of the city was named "Komandoria" (means Commandery of the Order) and the lake next it was named "Malta lake" because later the seat of the order was moved to Malta. The first Polish member of the Knights Hospitaler Order was probably (its not 100% confirmed) duke Henry I of Sandomierz ( who lived in years 1131 - 1166). He was the first Polish feudal lord who led Polish knights for crusade in Holy Land, never married and had no children. He also established of a commandery of the Hospitallers which was probably the oldest in Poland. He died on his own organised crusade against the pagan Prussians.
