thanks Allan for sharing this. as non resident alien of USA, if we file 8840 closure connection to Canada, then what happens to w-2 taxes deducted such as federal, state, social security and medicare? how to we get it back?

Hi there, No, you do not get it back. The US has the right to tax non-resident aliens for employment performed in the US. Form 8840 simply means that your tax home is not the US, and so the US will not tax you on your global income.

@@AllanMadanCA thanks Allan. nice explanation :) about your statement "No, you do not get it back" do you mean to say "you could still get refund if applicable after paying taxes through 1040-NR", could that be correct?

@@rajuchoudhari2409 You can get a refund if the taxes withheld are more than your actual tax liability. The difference will be refunded.
