It’s not Tony Brown. It’s all about Rassie and HOW he is prepared to experiment and go where No coaches have gone before. Rassie has a wing throwing a ball into a line out, he has a line out jumper playing at 7, he changes the complete dynamic of the reserve bench. What country will ever do that? From an AB supporter here, I think Rassie is just Pure Genius and other countries will continue to struggle against the Boks until these struggling countries start thinking outside the box.

What NZ pundits fail to understand which Hansen himself pointed out was that SA for many years had to deal with political interference when selecting teams ( this transformation was necessary to bring about change) Rassie was one of the first coaches to embrace this, current team is a diverse side that is chosen on merit, plenty of untapped talent makes for exciting times

Guys, what the Springboks do start at schoolboy level. The school competitions are huge! What NZ also needs to consider is to pick overseas based players. You have to change your approach to this matter in the modern era. Springboks play all over the world, with those clubs paying their salaries. That gives opportunities to the young guys, broadening the base to pick from.
@Formakiwi
@Formakiwi Ай бұрын
Nope. Not comparable. SA has the largest registered rugby player base on earth. NZs is similar to Ireland. Allowing our top players to play offshore would destroy domestic rugby and crash the standards overall, since most of our guys that move abroad now choose Japan, where the competition is soft, the money sweet and the training light. It would be a disaster and the prospect of having to negotiate with overseas clubs even for access to players should give every NZ rugby fan a cold shower.

Don't know what this fellow Tony Brown was brought into South African rugby for - we have had all the natural flair and fast flowing rugby players for decades - it was the head stumping brute force only mentality of our previous coaches who stifled our expansive rugby! The French were the first to play attacking and expansive running rugby in 1992 and they are still beautiful to watch at it. The All Blacks were quick to learn from the French way back then already. It took South Africa 32 years to do so!!!

I don't believe that Ireland will get caught with their pants down, but your logic is seriously flawed. One the one hand you have a provincial side comprising most of the Ireland players, with a South African two times RWC gold medalist tearing it up, and playing against provincial sides with far fewer international representatives; on the other hand you have the same Leinster side, minus RG and plus a small handful of good players, playing against the All Blacks. There simply is no comparison between the two.

Mils & the young lady absolutely make these discussions. Find it hilarious that the ABs & other countries think the reason RSA have done so well is due to structural things like ‘they can call on their o/s based players’ and so on; this is simplistic to the extreme. For decades NZ & Australia (& others, to a lesser extent) have benefitted hugely from being able to pick & choose from the cream of all the incredible Islander Nations eg Fiji, Samoa, Tonga etc, whereas SA only rely on home-grown talent. But, it’s a highly motiavated home talent who play not for themselves but for bigger ideals. Rassie has long known it is what’s going on in players heads & hearts that counts, not just hours in the gym or on the practice field.

We also have competitions that prepare them for different levels of international rugby. The problem New Zealand has and will always have, is a smaller pool of talent, small funding base, keeping up with development has not been progressing to where it should be compared to the rest of the world and more preferred sports are starting to emerge, challenging the player base for rugby. We will face a huge crisis if we don't figure out a pathway to the top for alot of promising talent. Currently our biggest hurdle would be funding to the base of our game and development of the talent that comes from there.

I am a kiwi and I do NOT agree with the 20-min red card system! These are professional players who should know enough and if not drilled enough to know what the rules are!!!! If you commit red-card foul then you should be removed from the game for good - not replaced after 20 mins! BTW JK the new red card 20-min rule DOES favour us because we are the most carded and ill-disciplined team since 2016! From the Twickenham vs Boks game to the 2024 World Cup final the All Blacks were red carded 3 times in 9 games and that does NOT include the amount of yellow cards! TO simply argue that it ruined a World Cup final was NOT an issue considering the scoreline 12-11!!!! The problem here is how does this help the ABs discipline - its a joke!

Why are they saying the npc is not fit for purpose? It shows who the players are that are ready for the next level. How is it not getting guys ready for Super rugby, when we keep winning Super rugby? The problem is Super rugby, and the problem with that is the lack of strength and depth of Australian rugby. We know a NZ team is going to win. I am not sure that Super rugby is getting guys ready for International rugby, since SA left.

The absolute last thing the AB’s need right now is to drop a game to Japan. The score gap has been closing each game, and throwing guys from the AB’s 15 squad is not the move. Play the men that made the 33, cement a solid team and grow their confidence thru winning. Enough said. Stop talking about losing games, and focus on the 33 that can win games.

If they want more game time with ball in play, stop the clock more. Stop the game clock when the ball is in touch, after a try, when waiting for a penalty kick or restart, and while setting up for a scrum.
@Karma-qt4ji

Asking for the ball to be in play more is asking to change the game or rugby entirely. Historically, there have always been scrums, lineouts, injuries and the game has always been stop start. We're asking to turn the 15 man game into 7's rugby while keeping it 15 man. Can't do that without removing place kicks, scrums, and pretty much everything that makes the 15 man game what it is.

They must penalise them at the tackle and ruck as they should instead of the manage the game bs. Which litterally means the ref will ignore certain transgressions. Which creates these "grey" areas. When they experimented in super 12 the first few games were a sht show. With penalties at most rucks. But once the players realised the ref aint screwing around. The penalties reduced and the game sped up dramatically! Unfortunately, the northern teams voted against it. So it was never made part of the game.

If they want more game time they should stop over reffing the game, which is what is taking up all the time. They keep banging on about speeding up the game when its things like this endless TMO'ing to decide whether a player is carded, instead of a simple penalty and carry on, that is slowing the game down. Its becoming nannyball, not rugby.

@@Karma-qt4ji I understand, and appreciate that the game is stop start. I'm not suggesting to change that. I'm simply saying stop and start the game clock along with the play of the ball. If a player feigns an injury, why allow the game clock to continue to run? Part of the reason there's a shot clock is to prevent players from running off five minutes, while taking a kick. So just stop the game clock entirely.
@multipletanksyndrome

Why does NZ think they know what makes the game go forward? I respect the innovation and dominance this team has displayed over the last 100 years but let's be honest, the Silverlake interjection in NZ rugby is pushing some ridiculous narrative about rugby - it needs to be 'faster' or have more 'ball in play'. I don't know about everyone else but ball in play is not the only thing I look for in rugby. Also, the NFL outperforms the NBA in viewing numbers and rugby outperforms football / soccer in Ireland in viewing numbers. Both of those of sports have less ball in play and perform far better than their counterparts (NBA, soccer). Could it be that some VC has got everyone convinced the game can be broken down to a single metric? Also, the local league in NZ sucks. No one watches it. The viewership numbers have gotten worse during the 'ball in play' advocacy era of NZ rugby. Idk who they think they are to tell the rest of the world that this is what entertaining rugby looks like when their game is in the drain. Exactly how is NZ best suited to a game that requires fitness, it's not 2010 anymore. NZ is one of the worst performing teams during the tail end of the game. FItness has something to do with it. Could the ABs still outperform the Boks at a beep test, probably. Certainly, their forwards could. Could they outperform them at a grappling kind of endurance. I'd argue no, the Boks tend to dominate the grappling like conditions toward the end of the game. Yes, I know it's the bomb squad but it's also not exclusively that. They train against a very good forward pack during practice for a specific kind of endurance and even when the props play a long outing, they do well at the end when their endurance is overwhelming. I would love for NZ to be less cult like in their pursuit of a certain kind of rugby. I always thought rugby was great because its a game for all shapes and sizes. Unfortunately making it all running rugby would change that. I like seeing Cheslin vs Tamati Williams. This is the rugby I love and I can't stand every episode or press conference being about 'we want the game to be like so' (because Siilverlake ran some algorithm on youtube rugby media and realized 'oh the highlight reel is all tries. We need more tries'). Stop listening to some North American VC when it comes to rugby. They don't know anything. P.S Love Tony, big fan of the Boks including some NZ rugby IP in their national team. I think he's a great guy and clearly obsessed with the game in a romantic kind of way but manages to channel that romance with sound, logical, and analytical application.

I dont understand why there aren't different red cards, like a blatant and obvious red card - like punching in the face or jumping on someones hand, something that no one is questioning - these should be full game, vs a tackle thats borderline or a mistake, those are ones that should be 20mins

I don’t see this improvement they are all talking about, I feel like NZ rugby has been going in the wrong direction for years and as an example there are no 10s playing in NPC that make the future look any better

People coach all over the world now and are Professionals and care about their jobs and integrity. Jacques Nienaber is a senior coach at Leinster but he and Erasmus won't be swapping information although they may join each other for social engagements and some beer or fine wine. If you watch the episode of The Breakdown right after the Rugby World Cup final in 2019 Tony Brown even said then that SA has emerging talent and he even hinted then he would love to coach in SA and quoted how much he enjoyed his stints with The Sharks and Stormers. Felix Jones and now Jerry Flannery may be Irish but they were and are 100% plugged into the Bok setup much like Mike Catt and Andy Farrell have done incredibly well at Ireland but would never give the English any info on their Irish team. You would kill your credibility and any future job if you did that so Tony likely also held back in this interview too and only gave out information that everyone knows already. These people are also all good friends off the field and work as a team. Tony and Jerry are not seeing this with patriotic goggles - its just their team against an opponent - no different from say Leon McDonald coaching the Blues but he played at The Crusaders and won't give Christchurch any information.

I personally think it's cruel. I fully understand that a Rugby board's decisions should be made by: what is best for New Zealand Rugby. that is not in question. but - IS what you are doing best for New Zealand Rugby??
