Objectives
~ Explore the connections and symptom overlaps between ADHD, addiction and mental illnesses
~ Explore the impact of these symptoms on the individual.

This hits you right in the gut, got diagnosed late last year at 42, and I'm still trying so hard to fit in with a neurotypical world. When the presentation said adults with ADHD are 42% more likely to underemployment, fear of rejection etc, that's all true with me. Haven't had a full time job for over 10 years. Been doing supply chain, photography, video editing, delivery driving, Uber driving, digital marketing, web developing to name a few. Now that I know what's wrong with me after all these years, I have hope. All the best for all the other late starters like me..

Hi I’m also same position as you my life has been living hell, struggling with relationships struggling to keep a job, I’ve worked in so many different sectors you name I’ve done it, from factories to warehouses, to delivery, restaurants etc etc. can’t seem to keep anything, suffering a nervous breakdown, funny I was in Egypt on holiday and had a breakdown a friend of a friend was a doctor, he spent a week or so with me, he diagnosed me with ADHD but when I got home, I forgot about it last 2 years same cycle again and again. Recently I found my diary I had lost, in it were notes from his hospital hence led me to these videos, all these years I’ve been thinking what is wrong with me, tomorrow morning I’ll be making a appointment with my Doc. Need help I’m falling apart again and again. I hope you are doing well.

This video and a recent diagnosis of ADHD has saved me. For 29 years I've been living undiagnosed and have unknowingly been struggling with my jobs and family life, living with anxiety thinking it was something everyone else was dealing with. Now with this knowledge and prescribed medicine, I can take to improving the life I've managed to build, and finally being at peace and enjoying it.

Where u able to get help? I'm just now realizing that I may have ADHD at 32 after starting my life off hectic and always in trouble as a child being told that I never sat down and I was always into things, going into my teenage in early adult hood years I was into a lot of impulsive things, addiction, and several car accidents now I'm in my 30s and everything seems like it's never ending I'm unemployed I'm depressed I'm a emotional wreck, everything in my life is in shambles and I'm trying to figure out why. And the more that I research about ADHD the more everything I hear resonates with me so I need to find someone in my area that specializes in ADHD to tell me if this is actually what I'm dealing with 😔

When you mentioned trauma, that light bulb came on. I'm 40 and have always had some form of anxiety and concentration issues as children but I was an "A" student. I pulled my hair out when in class or during school work. I was an organized chaos child. I never knew what it was. My family didn't know but constantly teased me, embarrassed me, saying something is wrong with me in an insulting manner, and made me feel like I was abnormal and weird. Fast forward to 2006 in Afghanistan where I under went CPTSD it started this bullet train of shyt I've been struggling through for years. Alcohol has been my go to when it never used to be. Extreme anxiety, depression, lack of concentration, etc. A civilian diagnosed me with adult ADHD but the military said it's not ADHD, it's anxiety and depression. I've tried meds but nothing has worked and I've been tired of being misdiagnosed. I've seen therapist for my worst moments as I've experienced more trauma over the years. Trauma makes sense because whenever trauma happens I become even more out of sorts. The past two years I have dealt with toxic family emotional abuse and a suicide death. I've been trying to just survive. I want to get back to a state prior to 2006 where I was thriving. How can I better express my need for a proper diagnosis and not be gaslighted by my Dr.? Because I'm successful they think it's not adult ADHD but the outside accomplishments doesn't match what I internalize to get there. My internal struggle is starting to over take me as I progress. I feel like I'm losing control hence the "depression" I guess. Thank you!

In response to gaslighting, I have found that with good doctors, if you find checklists for different diagnoses and explain how you meet each criteria... "Difficulty concentrating as evidenced by...." they may often take it a little more seriously. It is possible that you have multiple issues going on---so you may need to do checklists for each one to try to differentially self diagnose...sux I know. If you want to email me at support@allceus.com (reference your KZbin username) they will send me the ticket and I might be able to more effectively point you in the direction of some articles and screening instruments that could be useful. ~Dr. Snipes

I have Inattentive type ADD. I wasn’t diagnosed until I was 37 after I sought it out on my own. I remember being a “daydreamer” in 3rd grade staring out the window and then spending too much time on detailed drawings on my homework and turning in everything late. I was in Arkansas at the time and was sent to the Principal for a spanking because of my frequent lateness with school work. 😤

Every single thing on that list for ADHD fits me. Are there people who actually don’t experience those things? I don’t know...I’m having an internal freak out right now. I definitely relate to the attention deficit symptoms. For example, a video this long usually takes me hours to complete because I zone out and then repeat every 10-15 minutes. @@DocSnipes I mean it, your videos are incredibly informative and well thought out couple Q’s - Do you have a podcast or an audio version of your videos available? I can’t seem to find it on Spotify - I don’t remember you touching on processing speed disorders(psd) in adhd clients in pt 1/2. would it be wrong to assume that anyone who suffers from adhd would also suffer from a psd or would adhd just put them at a > risk of developing a psd? furthermore, if anxiety and depression go untreated for long periods of time this can decay a patients brain and put them at greater risk for alzheimer’s and dementia. wtbs, does a psd act as it’s own symptom of adhd and other comorbid disorders? or would you say a psd is a developing disorder that acts as a halfway point b/t mild and severe mental disorders Ex: anxiety->psd->dementia sorry for the long writeup but i find this fascinating i can’t wait for my behavioral psych class. i don’t expect you to fully respond in comment(or at all)but if you could find someway to address this in a similar video that’d be really cool, Keep up the good work!!

I was anxious and not sure I wanted to watch this video but I did and I’m so glad because it was very helpful. At 58 years old, to be diagnosed as an adult is a double edge sword. Just like the disorder there are good and bad aspects. The good thing is knowing what’s been affecting you your whole life that you didn’t understand but the bad thing is being flooded with all this information and overwhelmed and finding the proper treatment for this and all the other conditions you may have. Thanks for your presentation.

Poly substance enthusiast no more like a freaking machine. Anyway I am 30 now and had forgot most of this stuff and eventually slumped back to the point of helplessness agajn. the worst part seems to be many friends/peers suffer trauma depression addiction issues too (cluster b's) and they project onto me while also taking advantage.. they claim ADHD isn't real or they have it too although I usually try explain the difference between PD's and ADHD and how probablyas impolitely and impulsively rude as I can hope not to be)

Have you done any research on what happens to the mind of someone with ADHD that was diagnosed as a child but untreated that has had the worse possible life... all the way through... I was a terrible kid in school ALL symptoms of ADHD and bipolar mixed with physical abuse at home. Never learned anything from school so i dont know anything... Cant do anything... Ran away from states custody at 14 and been on my own ever since. Currently im 36 and have spent more than half of my life in jail and even prison... A REAL PRISON not jail... That was a 1 punch fight where i lost my temper and broke his nose... I dont have the power to stop myself from doing this and a million other things i do... But this thing got me sent to the worse prison in tennessee when i was just 18... Prison is no joke, ppl have no idea how messed up life is in there especially someone with all of my problems!! So i get out 3 yrs later and im scared to even be around ppl AT ALL so ive spent most of the last 15 yrs either alone hiding from ppl using drugs , heroin for 8 yrs then meth for a few more yrs... ALWAYS smoked weed..... Or ive been jail mostly for the same things over and over... Driving on suspended license (maybe 30 times) Possession of marijuana (also around 30) i just never thought to leave the weed at the house, no matter how many YEARS ive spent in jail over it! Never would go see probation officers because of my anxiety, plus i was always dirty for weed which i LITERALLY can't live without, so i just never went... 10-1yr jail sentences served in a crappy jail since i got out of prison 15 yrs ago... No friends no family... Currently looking to going back to prison for 8 yrs over drug possession because ive had so many in the past. They gave me 1 last shot at a 1yr Christian based rehab and because i couldnt get all the work done as fast as they wanted it done (lot of bookwork from the bible and various recovery books everyday) im so drained from lack of sleep it makes my ADHD symptoms worse i pretty much cant do anything cant remember anything i cant have a conversation with ANYBODY because i forget what im talking about every 10 seconds... ok its takin me 7 hrs to write this out so im gonna go... HELP...please what do i do

why is it trauma or adhd....surely can be both/?

Yes, they can co-occur, but if the ADHD symptoms develop after the trauma or adverse childhood experiences, the behaviors are often better explained by PTSD / cPTSD The diagnostic guidelines indicate to not give both diagnoses if the ADHD symptoms are fully explained by cPTSD

@@DocSnipes thanks for your response. I guess it depends on one's definition of trauma etc. Perhaps i've been misdiagnosed with adhd....who knows. There are theories by the likes of Gabor Mate...saying that trauma could be seen as a contributing factor to the living with adhd. Is this something you distance yourself from?

Being an adult who was diagnosed when I was 45yrs old, I have to tell you that even though I'm on medication your video had me drifting off and not paying attention. If you want ADHD people to be included in your presentations, I'd advise you to add some moving graphics of some sort to keep us focused on what you are talking about. I honestly wanted to listen to your video, but within 3 minutes I'd totally lost interest. Hopefully this is helpful criticism and not intended to say your work is bad. Because I couldn't concentrate long enough to find out either way.
