for me when it comes to music i appreciate variety. I can go from listening to borderline indecipherable demilich to a song like don't do it by havok which is a surface level but satisfying song about depression. if every song was super complex and serious that would remove a lot of variety from music. I'm a younger person (20) who plays in a one man band and I personally like mixing up different topics for songs, sometimes bloody satanic stuff other times more serious things about people and society. A band like allegaeon making a joke song about hotdogs is hardly the face of metal, in fact I usually see the opposite now. to be clear, I'm not a fan allegaeon and I don't listen to a lot of modern necrophagist inspired tech death so I'm with you on that. But to say all or most modern bands don't write personal music is very ignorant. IMO the main issue with modern bands is that they have boring riffs, shitty auto tuned emo vocals, and sterile bland robotic production that all makes it too close to pop music with a metal facade. PS what are your thoughts on Barn from ohio? theyre a more recent modern tech death band but they play the 90s style. their songs have interesting somewhat esoteric lyrics too.
