Shown is a Marcellus Shale gas well flaring in the Allegheny National Forest on Saturday afternoon, April 6th, 2013. The location is Forest Road 444 in Elk County just off of State Route 948 (immediately west of 948's junction with State Route 66).

While Marcellus Shale gas drilling is not as common in the ANF as it is in other parts of the state, and none of the proposed wilderness or national recreation areas from the Citizens' Wilderness Proposal for Pennsylvania's Allegheny National Forest have been impacted by Marcellus drilling to date, these images certainly serve as a vivid reminder of the fate that may await many unprotected areas of the ANF if the U.S. Congress fails to act in time.
A few short years ago this large clearing and gas well pad was completely forested.
