I'm an Englishman living in England and I really enjoyed the measured depth of this presentation. I particularly found value in hearing how you savour American craftsmanship and values that shape the very nature of these shoes, and that refocussing on that is the path into the future for this company. Here in England our equivalent companies like Loake have strayed into offshoring some of their production and my experience of the results tells me that that is a mistake. So it's English made Loakes for me and based on your video, if I lived your side of the pond, I'd be buying Allen Edmunds.

Just bought my first pair of AE shoes. Strand weave in dark chili, and from their local store. Not a rich guy, but really wanted quality and great fit. American-made, when possible, is an absolute plus for me. Worn them once since trying them on in the store, and so far, they feel fantastic. That particular style, with the weave, is very unique, and I think, super classy. Their merchandise isn't cheap, but I love quality and craftsmanship, and I especially like caring for durable goods, and making them look their best. I'm hopeful these will stand the test of time.

You spent more time explaining a premium brand shoe, than my Haberdasher did, before I bought my first through third pairs of Alan Edmond shoes. I learned a lot about the shoe. Some 7 to 10 years later, all of these shoes seem to look as good as the day I bought them. Now my Haberdasher has retired and the store is closed, yet I now know where to send my shoes when they need to get fixed. I always knew there was a lifetime ability to work on the shoe for refurbishments. What I did not know is what the workmanship levels were for those repairs. Now I do. What I do know is the the shined Allen Edmonds shoe makes a statement when wearing them and always compliments the rest of the outfit I have chosen to wear. Thank you for all your efforts.

Watching this in 2022. This is a very well done video and it tells an important story. Buying American does make a difference. If you don't want to live in a "big box" world--don't spend your money at "big box" stores. Support smaller retailers who might offer a better service, but also support big American companies who are true to their heritage and quality standards--and...as I just learned, are also offering a very high level of service before and after a sale.

Great stuff Jon! And thanks to them for giving you the time and answering the tough questions! I fully appreciate what a company has to do in order to survive changes in the market and in styles too, and I think they are well positioned like you said to continue to lead the charge in american footwear. Also, I still think that the fact that they offer so many sizes and widths is a HUGE strength that most modern guys dont even know exists. hopefully they can stress that in ads more. Great video, thanks Jon!! I’m glad to hear that AE is trying to figure out its modern identity. I bought a few pairs of boots this season for my fall rotation. I considered the Higgins Mill, but honestly the last three pairs of AE shoes that I bought all had major QC issues that their customer service essentially ignored. I’m sorry, but I just don’t trust the company anymore. It makes me really sad because they were once my favorite shoemaker. I’m all for growth and evolution, but not at the cost of quality. At the end of the day, I want to always find the best value and AE just doesn’t make the cut anymore for me because of these issues. I’ll be happy if I find out that their QC has improved and will gladly return to being a lifelong AE customer if it does. Reading the recent reviews on their site does not give me much confidence though ☹️.

So this weekend I discovered the AE seconds sale and picked up a pair of Higgins Mills for $190. I can deal with QC issues at that price! These are really beautiful boots and they are much higher quality than other $200 boots. Actually, they are better quality then the 1st quality Daltons I picked up a year ago. Will definitely keep buying seconds from AE!

I'm a bit late to the party but here are a few of my thoughts: 1. Marketing department could focus on a) natural vs synthetic materials, b) support vs squishy materials, and c) durability and longevity. In particular explicitly state the advantages and disadvantages of each side. For instance, how a full leather liner naturally avoid the that swamp feet that you might get with synthetic materials, especially when going sock-less. Or how over time EVA and other shock absorbing materials are great for running or working out, but bottom out over time if you're on your feet all day or just walking. 2. The level of scrutiny we have these days is something we never seen before, and that is not just with shoes. For instance, people will use a macro lens with special studio lighting to see if a hand finished guitar has any tool marks. Perhaps investing a bit more on the finishing touches of shoes is in order. Some criticism some companies receive is just ridiculous, but others are somewhat of a valid point. For instance, my older AEs tended to have perfect stitching channels. My last two were kind of sloppy. I mean, it's not interfering with anything, and besides, even for shoe nuts, you can't see most of these AE imperfections, unless you have the shoes about a foot and a half or less from your face. However, improving some of these finishing touches would give customers a sense of reassurance and quality. 3. Even with the quality on finishing touches having declined, I still feel like AE still makes good shoes designed to last for generations. You put your feet in a Clark's, Johnston & Murphy, Cole Han etc. and you put your feet in a MIA Allen Edmonds, you immediately feel the difference. Yes it's a $200 difference, but the difference in comfort is also night and day. One big challenge AE face are brands like Carmina, where for an extra $100 or less, you get absolute perfection. AE is in a really tight pickle. If they raise the price to address some these finishing touches they are essentially sending a signal admitting that they lagged behind on their QC. Furthermore, with the higher prices they also risk loosing some customers to Alden and other brands a tier or more above AE. However, if they do nothing, they loose customers because of competition from Carmina (price point between Alden and AE), Cobbler Union (same price point as AE) and brands like Meermin and Thursday Boots (lower price point to AE). If they address the finishing construction issues, but reduce the quality of materials, people will notice.

I actually just spoke to a customer service agent from AE in the last couple of hours on the phone. I was confused about their manufacturing locations since I read on wikipedia (yeah, not always reliable, but still) that their GY welted shoes have the uppers sewn in the Dominican Republic and then shipped here to be welted, soled, and finished. However, when I watched Steve's factory tour video yesterday, I saw that they were making what seemed to be all the different GYW styles from the beginning in Wisconsin. The guy on the phone told me that if it's got a 360 GY welt, it's made in Wisconsin, whereas the Dominican Republic ones are the AE by Allen Edmonds series and any other bonded type of shoe. Definitely helped solve the confusion! EDIT: I did some further research and found a forum post by their former CEO, Paul Graangard (sp?). He said that some of the GYW uppers are indeed pre-sewn in the DR, but not all of them by any means. It just helps split the work a bit.

I had my walnut Strands resoled by AE and changed from leather to dainite sole. When I got them back, the sole was peeling off. I had to send them back and they resoled them again. The dainite heal lasted about three months, so instead of resoling them, I took them to a local shop and they put new rubber on the heals for $18 and put a great polish on them as well. The local shop did a much better job.

There is one factor to consider when discussing quality concerns and complaints. I suspect most of the complaints are coming from online orders. Think about it. You go to the store. You inspect the shoe, try it on, and buy it. If there is a flaw, you don't buy it or choose another one. When you order online, you don't get to inspect the shoe. Flawed first arrives and haul boom!, AE has a quality control problem - at least that's what the buyer thinks. I'd be interested to see complaints on online orders v store purchases.

I love the video. After watching this a few times, I don’t like the dismissive nature of the quality concerns. I’ve bought two shoes in the last few months that were unwearable first quality. I have pics. They were both so fresh you could smell the paint. They weren’t pre-caleres or minor issues. I returned them and didn’t bother exchanging due to my lack of faith in receiving a good product. Keep in mind I have 15 pairs of Allen Edmonds. Sure you can return them but the frequency of issues seems to be too high.

I agree and I was happy they 1. would speak about it on camera 2. are well aware and looking to make changes. If they continue, they'll surely see a drop in customer satisfaction and sales so it's in their best interest to fix it asap

Great video. The shoes bag should be automatically given inside the box considering the prices of these shoes. It doesn't matter if the customer will use it or not. Not many people will notice the the little shoe bag checkbox on the website. People are literally giving 1 star review to Allen Edmonds because of the missing shoe bags.

Excellent work. I can't stress that enough. Such an entertaining, informative, and professional piece. Are they phasing out the oxbloods? It's my favorite color and I don't see much of them anymore. Sidenote: you're wearing the bejeezus out of that shirt - it's as crisp and clean as the video.

Wonderful work on a great company! I’ve very recently become an avid wearer of AE’s, purchased through the used market (Poshmark, EBay, etc). Looking forward to when I’ll have worn some of them enough to have them recrafted at the factory. Thank you for your work on this. It’s a great business that can decide “this is who we are, and we’re going to be excellent at doing what we love doing”

Thank you so much!! I love it, it’s American Made!! I just received my Strands and I love them. This is my 3rd pair of Allen Edmonds. These are in my opinion a lot better made than my older ones.

Really excellent work! It's so hard to understand what's going on with AE - reviews are so disparate I'm worried about jumping in. This makes me feel a bit more confident. Thanks!

Great video. I have several pairs of Allen Edmonds that are more than ten years old that still look and feel fantastic. I also have some newer versions that exhibit the exact same quality. Other than the length, this was a typical Kavalier video, entertaining and informative! Keep them coming.

@The Kavlier - That's a well fitting dress shirt at 2:43 in the video. Is that a slim fit, extra slim fit or a super slim fit dress shirt? And what brand is it?

This is an excellent, informative video. I appreciate how detailed and comprehensive your coverage and review is. Well done. I have a few pairs of AE and am looking to eventually rotate out of my other brands and go exclusively with AEs. And I won't mind paying full price for them, either.

Really great work on this video. For some reason you kind of remind me of Kirby Allison from the Hanger Project. I absolutely love Allen Edmonds and their shoes. Glad you were able to shine some light on this American (specifically WI) company.

Thanks for a great video and an amazing insight into my favorite shoe brand. It is good to know they listen to us out here and not forgotten those of us who have supported the brand for years. Your additional information puts even the corporate speak into better focus. I think there is room for them to continue to service both us long time traditionalists and work at different markets. I think they should keep the idea of the sales they run each year as this is an excellent way to infuse new clients into the brand and those sales have become a staple and tradition for us long timers as well. It is still a higher initial price point than most shoppers have and any savings generally go back into either customizing the shoe or additional pairs.

I bought a pair of the $197.00 clearance Normandy 1660 captoe boots last week. The advertisement currently on their site depicts the boot with rawhide brown/yellow laces and yellow stitching and a leather sole. I received something completely different. Yes 1660 was stamped inside the tounge and on the box, but i received flat black leather laces, with black stitching and a vibram like sole. I contacted customer service to inquire and they nonchalantly told me the pictured boot I thought I was puchasing is not in production yet. I was really interested in the boot as shown on the website due to the color variations of laces and stitching but I believe they are pulling a bait and switch on this item. Now don't get me wrong, it is the most expensive, comfortable quality boot I've ever owned and will not exchange them because they fit me so well. However something's fishy there.
