Allen Iverson talks about practice again in 2016 → • Video
sports.genius.com/Allen-iverso... ← Full transcript
It was like any other day in our newsroom.
I was hanging out in our news director Tom Stathakes' office when someone came in and said that Allen Iverson was holding a press conference within the hour outside the Sixers locker room, which is located a level below our Wells Fargo Center newsroom.
Four days earlier the Sixers had been eliminated from the NBA playoffs and Iverson had yet to speak to reporters since the humiliating 33-point loss to the Celtics. Stathakes without missing a beat told me, "Why don't you ask him why he doesn't show up at practice."
So that is the origin of the now infamous "practice" press conference, which was 10 years ago on Monday. I was the person who initiated the practice questioning to Iverson. Remarkably the press conference and the 24 references by Iverson to the word "practice" remains one of the most memorable pressers in sports history. How many times have you seen people mock Iverson's practice rant? Heck Larry Brown did it two weeks ago when he was named Head Coach at SMU.
The press conference lasted 31 minutes and for a good 25 minutes Iverson was combative, heartfelt, honest and pure A.I., which made for great television. We carried the press conference live on Comcast SportsNet during Daily News Live and into Sportsnite. After a few minutes addressing the season and the loss to the Celtics, my question about Allen's practice habits stirred the pot. We had an exchange back and forth and before you knew it, the 15 or so reporters in attendance started digging further into "practice." Iverson was a year removed from being named league MVP and leading the 76ers to the NBA finals, and he felt he didn't need to answer questions about his practice habits because of what he brought to the games. No argument there but I do believe that Allen had the ability to make his teammates better and set a better example for his teammates.
It never happened.
The A.I era moved on without a championship and I can only image how many times Iverson has been asked or heard someone say "practice"? It didn't define his career but it will forever be part of the Allen Iverson mystique, which was tumultuous just like the press conference.

I always wonder why he said this.. Smh.. You do whatever you gotta do as a leader to make the team better and if it's still not working the organization makes the proper changes.. Practice develops chemistry, timing and whatnot that way when you're out on the floor your teammates and you are all in cahoots wit the game plan you practiced.. He answered his own question when he said ".. by practicing"

Even after all these years the media (ESPN) never shows this entire interview, and never tells the entire story behind why AI ranted like he did; he was crushed inside about the death of his best friend and the "practice" thing was just the fringe of the story. Of course ESPN pulled out a sound-bite and made the story what they thought would get better ratings, never mind the TRUTH! Millions of people still think Iverson was talking about practicing, they were never told the real story. The media in this country is vile, this is just a single instance of their corruption concerning sports, what do you think they do with stories that concern world leaders, economic issues, or potential wars? You guessed it, they tell what brings them ratings, never mind the truth.

It's true he might have been in a bad place but it wasn't taken out of context at all. Listen to how he talks down to the reporter at the end. I love AI but he wasn't taken out of context

It was taken out of context but the summary of what Iverson said was not so different. "How can I make my teammates better by practicing." Although ESPN took the actual practice line out of context, many other things he said were along the same lines.

Bad azz Patriot The whole interview wasn't showed. I honestly never even seen this part until now. The media just wanted to make a joke out of Iverson's practice rant. They didn't care about Iverson losing someone he really cared for. This interview was taken out of context just for the media to joke about something. Despite Iverson lost, too which they could care less about.

He was good but overrated. A volume shooter who didn't make the players around him better. In the season he won MVP he only shot 42% from the field and 32% from 3, both below league average. Great teams don't care if someone scores 40 points when miss 58% of their shots cause that means most of those misses turn into possessions for them where they can score and make up those points.
@XxTheIKINGxX
@XxTheIKINGxX 8 жыл бұрын
+Steven Gardner Yeah but shooting 42 percent out of the amount of shots he took /was/ outstanding. Sure, the league average was higher than that but an individuals shots per game by on average was much lower, too. You need to look at everything relative to the way he played and the system he had set up, and when looking at that - you can understand why he was such an amazing player and why he's a Hall of Famer.

It's unbelievable how much criticism this guy got, he worked his ass off and then these idiotic reporters ask him an irrelevant question. He was the mvp for a reason and single handily changed the PG position forever, and on top of that brought such a shitty franchise to the finals. I was never a sixers fan (in fact I'm a Knicks fan) but iversons heart and determination made him one of the greats not of the modern era but ever.

Reporter: Could you be clear about your practicing habits since we can't see you practice?Iverson: Anybody tell you that I missed practice... If, If, if a Coach say I missed practice, and y'all hear it, then that's that. I mean, I might have missed one practice this year but if, if somebody say he doesn't come to practice, it could be one practice. Out of all the practices this year, that's enough... that's enough to get a whole lot started. I told Coach Brown that you don't have to give the people of Philadelphia a reason to think about trading me or anything like that. If you trade somebody, you trade them to make the team better...simple as that. I'm cool with that. I'm all about that. The people in Philadelphia deserve to have a winner. It's simple as that. It goes further than that …Reporter: So you and coach Brown got caught up on Saturday about practice?Iverson: If I can't practice, I can't practiceman. If I'm hurt, I'm hurt. I mean … simple as that. It ain't about that... I mean it's... It's not about that... At all. You know what I'm saying I mean... But it's...it's easy … to, to talk about... It's easy to sum it up when you're just talking about practice. We're sitting in here, and I'm supposed to be the franchise player, and we in here talking about practice. I mean, listen, we're talking about practice, not a game, not a game, not a game, we talking about practice. Not a game. Not, not … Not the game that I go out there and die for and play every game like it's my last. Not the game, but we're talking about practice, man. I mean, how silly is that? … And we talking about practice. I know I supposed to be there. I know I'm supposed to lead by example... I know that... And I'm not.. I'm not shoving it aside, you know, like it don't mean anything. I know it's important, I do. I honestly do... But we're talking about practiceman. What are we talking about? Practice? We're talking about practice, man. [laughter from the media crowd] We're talking aboutpractice. We're talking about practice. We ain't talking about the game. [more laughter]We're talking about practice, man. When you come to the arena, and you see me play, you see me play don't you? You've seen me give everything I've got, right? But we're talking about practice right now. We talking about pr... [Interrupted].Reporter: But it's an issue that your coach continues to raise?Iverson: Man look, I hear you... it's funny to me too, I mean it's strange... it's strange to me too, but we're talking about practice man, we're not even talking about the game... theactual game, when it matters... We're talking about practice …

Iverson is one of the few players who truly never EVER gave up in the game. He went 100% and sacrificed his body more often than anyone in the league. If he thinks he NEEDS to rest he probably needs it more than any of us can understand. There is no way that someone with the mindset of Iverson would sacrifice getting better if he truly wasn’t hurting mentally and physically at the time.

Some of the best lines, EVER: 1. "We talkin bout practice. We not talking bout the game, the actual game. We talkin bout PRACTICE." 2. "How the hell can I make my teammates better by practicing? I'm the MVP..." 3. "i don't know you as a basketball player....what's your question, Phillip?" 4. "If I come in here, big and swoll and tough, y'all gonna give my that award, right? I've been the MVP, boney as hell." LMAO!!!!!!

Context is everything. I wonder how anybody ever got anything from this press conference other than he's also human and that he might have missed one practice in a year but everyone's pouncing on him like he was the worst player in the world. Imagine how ironic it might have felt for him to hear: "you can make your teammates better" vs "you might be traded". I need to go look for that Netflix documentary you all are talking about tho.

As someone who was in competitive sports myself, there's points for and against what AI is saying. Basketball is a team sport so you can make your team better because you develop rhythm and chemistry. You can't make your teammates better per se in terms of individual talent but you can make them play better together. But where none of us can put ourselves in AI's shoes - he's unbelievably talented. None of us know how easy or difficult it is to just turn the switch on with our without practice and go out on the court to put up 30 points and 10 assists. Who knows. But it's still a hilarious and great interview.

A.I. will always be my boy !!. He was Jordan to me. Nobody could touch him. He put his heart on the court I enjoyed watching him from start to finish. Wish he could've ended his career the right way. It didn't have to be with a ring but the NBA drove this guy away. And he was speaking the truth. If he's been going to practice all the time and his teammates aren't getting better. What's the point? He didn't have a condition problem or anything. When he got on the floor he took beating after beating, still putting up 30+ with ease and trying to get his bum teammates involved. Iverson changed the game on and off the court and will never be forgotten.
