I was stationed on the USS Franklin D Rosevelt from 1972 to 1976. During that time, we made two Med cruses. The Allen M Sumner DD692 was one of our escort ships. I remember refueling with her alongside the Pawcatuck (AO 108) fleet oiler at the same time. I remember as we refueled how steady the Rosevelt traveled through the water while the Sumner bounced up and down while riding the waves. That big 692 hull number sticks in my mind as if it were yesterday. I also got to ride the Pawcatuck for 2 days in the Med while being transported back to the Rosevelt. Lots of good memories.

Sumner and Gearing class Destroyers had 4 Boilers, not 8, as stated in the narration.

My Dad served aboard one of the Sumner class ships mentioned in this video, DD 755 (USS John A. Bole) from 1951 to ‘53. The Bole supported Task Force 77 off the Korean Peninsula and the China Sea during the Korean War. Thanks for the video, well done. God bless the Tin Can Sailors!

My uncle was lost with most of his crew mates on the Drexler off the coast of Okinawa May 28, 1945. Two kamikaze hits cut it in half when the second hit detonated the aft 5” magazine. Rest easy Uncle Burton.

I was a Knox class crewman. Habitability and sensor fit were vastly improved over the Sumner class, while armament, speed, and range, were considerably reduced. With one screw, one rudder, and a 30kt (straining every rivet) top speed, the Knoxes were specialized ASW escorts, opposed to the Sumner class' more general purpose fit. Oddly enough, the Knox class was close to TWICE the Sumner's displacement. A bit strange that, in an era where potential enemy subs were able to make 25kts+ submerged, the Knox class emphasized ASW weapon range over class maneuverability and high dash speed. We were fitted for a Helo, but I never saw one land on the helo deck or be stored in our hangar. ASW warfare on the Knox class was the province of SoNAR and ASROC (and to a lesser extent small ASW torpedoes). The age of the "roll 'em off the fantail!" Depth Charge was over by 1972. Our AA defenses were lousy, with a Mk l Eyeball directed PDMS (an 8 cell Sea Sparrow box launcher with a guidance turntable above the fantail) and the 5"/38cal forward. I was a snipe, but that gun was more precious to me than our engines. In my view, what's needed in ASW warfare is an effective anti-TORPEDO weapon. It's most likely our boys will detect an enemy sub only when it fires a a weapon at us. By then it's too late for the surface ship to do anything but prepare for the afterlife. Why? Because we need an effective anti-Torpedo weapon or device. Decoys are cute, but a dumb torpedo will still go right through them as if they don't exist.

Well, sounds like it was the best-possible ASW Destroyer. This version was more Pacific, and ready for GunFights and Air Attacks.

Gearing class destroyers were Sumner's with a longer hull. There wasn't enough room on the Sumners for crew and added greater fuel bunkerage.

In your listing of the ships in the class, my ship was incorrectly listed as the Ingram. Her correct name was the USS Ingraham DD-694. She took a kamikaze in 1945 but was repaired and received the FRAM 2 alteration. She was sold to the Greek navy in 1971.

Follow up to the Sumner’s were the Gearing class. These were then followed by the Forrest Sherman class. The Knox class were originally follow ups to WWII destroyer escorts and were originally classified as DE’s. Sumner/Gearing class had four, not eight, boilers. 600 psig B&W with controlled superheat. First time I've ever heard of pentuple being used in place of quintuple. Is that even a word?
@j.d.schultzsr.9215
@j.d.schultzsr.9215 11 ай бұрын
"Pentuple" (derived from Greek for five) is indeed a word. Although using it in combination with a Latin word (e.g., quintuple) renders it much less common, it nevertheless DOES have the same meaning. Having a HS diploma, two Associates, a BA, prolific reading and ocassional composition, I thought I understood the differences between "penta" and "quint." My investigational sojourn into this question casted it in an entirely new light.
@baozuci3594

Regardless, having read a lot about how they describe the torpedo armament of a ship, nobody uses the word pentuple in any of it.

@@baozuci3594 , Your first comment pointed out that the use of rhe word was unusual and questioned its mere existance. Because the use of a word is inconsistent does not make it wrong.

I'm not saying it's wrong, but tuple and quint is from Latin and penta is from Greek. Why try to mash the two together? People who do that is just showing off for those stupid enough to not even find out.
