Gave me new appreciation of the 109's. Knew they were awesome. Embrace them. But it is the P-51 "D" that still holds my fascination. For several decades a veteran pilot, living a couple miles south of me, owned one and flew it from a private airfield to our north. He'd fly the Invasion Day bar marked shiny Mustang south to go over his own neighborhood. Meant I could hear him coming and stop everything I was doing. Hear the Doppler tone rise as he neared, see him, watch him bank over his neighborhood, sometimes exiting directly over me, sunlight glistening off the skin, the Doppler effect now receding, the love of that P-51 D reinforced once again. P.S. My fraternal uncle spent the war in Texas. At age 13, well before WWII, had gotten his private pilot's license. With his headstart, he spent the war teaching pilots, the last years teaching combat pilots to fly P-51's! My legacy. My favorite aircraft ever.

There was one glaring difference between the P51 Mustang and the Bf 109. It was this. By the time the yanks, with the benefit of years of training and unlimited resources, showed up (1944) in the P51, the Creme de la Creme of the Luftwaffe were gone, either killed by the RAF or the RED ARMY. The yanks went up against young men who were undertrained due to lack of fuel etc. The two aircraft were roughly equal, the aircrew were not.

@bluefox94364 жыл бұрын
@@Warbirds the C3 fuel was - but it was very limited since even average fuel was a pretty big problem for the Luftwaffe at this time
@dukecraig24024 жыл бұрын
Stewart Nicol There were "Yanks" slugging it out with the "Creme de la Creme" Luftwaffe pilots and were a part of eliminating them before the P51 and it's pilots showed up, the 56th fighter group with their P47's shure as hell shot their share of hot shot Luftwaffe aces out of the sky, it wasn't just the RAF and the RED ARMY that did it alone, maybe you should go to the graveyard at Cambridge and read some of the tombstones, look at the fighter groups and dates carved in them for the proof. With the exception of a few rarely fielded versions of the BF109 it was no match for the P51, the P51 could out climb the BF109 all week long and twice on Sunday, if you have equal amounts of fuel in each plane the P51 easily out climbs the BF109, the only reason that the BF109 has the climbing rate it does is for the same reason that the Spitfire does, the designers sacrificed fuel capacity and range for rate of climb, the P51 had an aft fuel tank that the BF109 and the Spit didn't, the engine of the P51 drew it's fuel from this tank for take off and climbing to altitude, after draining it they switched to their external stores and drew fuel from them for the long flight to where the Luftwaffe would come up to engage the bombers, then they'd jettison their drop tanks and in this configuration, which is the one they'd be in when they typically engaged the BF109's and they were at the altitudes that the engagements typically happened at, they could out perform them in every way. Everyone thinks the BF109 could out climb the P51 but that's because everyone always looks at their rate of climb from sea level with the P51's aft tank filled, the NACA reports show that when they're in the configurations that they typically met each other in combat the P51 out performs it all around. As far as exotic late war BF109's they weren't anything the P47's and the later upgraded Spits running the American 150 octane fuel couldn't take of. P47M's could close the gap on and destroy ME262's that were at full throttle and running away in level flight, there's several documented accounts of that happening. It wasn't green Luftwaffe pilots that were flying most of the jets and upgraded BF109's at the end of the war, it was mostly the last of their experienced pilots.
@KBKriechbaum2 жыл бұрын
@@dukecraig2402 Small detail: Literally thousands of well rested US-Pilots in well maintained high performance planes against a handful of exhausted german pilots in planes made with very limited resources and sub-par fuel. It is good that the americans rarely ever had to face equal opponents in terms of equipment or numbers. Or it would be many more Kasserine Pass battles or Schweinfurt raids. The US were best at logistics due to their untouched production sites, unlimited raw material and manpower in their industry. They were a crucial supplier but you got to hand it to the british that really fought with their backs against the wall facing a fully functional and well prepared Luftwaffe. Politically the US always made the right choices, joining in when everybody else was totally exhausted and then claiming the win with minimal losses relatively speaking.

I never thought either compared to the Spitfire but simply between the two: 109 is more manuverable, has better armament, can claim that it saw service through the entire war and still managed to be somewhat competitive P51 has the range, is easier on the pilot (wider landing gear, better canopy, etc), better looking, and more iconic to non-airplane enthusiasts

Depends where you are. The design of the 109 was over 7 years old when the mustang came to the troops. It was a time where the optimal solution wasn't so apparent. So, the 109 and british types were pioneering in this field. The mustang had the advantage that lots of experience from actual modern aerial combat went into its design. To me it is always a miracle how the the engineers at messerschmitt and FW could build competitive machines with so many limitations in available materials, relying on way lower octane fuels, weaker logistics to support all the operations.

The P-51 have that Elegant Hope / Savior look while the Bf109 have that badass Black Knight / Menacing look. still one of the biggest debate is which of them turned better
@dukecraig24024 жыл бұрын
Take it from someone who was an Air Defense gunner that also grew up shooting skeet and hunting game birds, using cannons on those planes is like shooting at quail with buckshot, granted if you hit one you'll cream your target but that's a big if, having more, properly bore sighted, smaller caliber guns are a better system, .50 cal is plenty big to deal with the aircraft of this era. Also the loss of one of six guns from a malfunction is much better then the loss of half of your weapons because of the malfunction of one of only two cannon, more ammo and the fact that .50 cal is plenty big to bring down aircraft, even the heaviest armored aircraft from this era such as an IL-2 which is commonly referred to as a "flying tank" but is actually at best just a "flying armored car", aircraft from this era are flimsy machines compared to the other war machines of this era.
@dukecraig24024 жыл бұрын
The BF109 did not have a higher rate of climb then the P51 did, the BF109 got it's rate of climb the same way the Spitfire did, by compromising fuel capacity to make it a lighter plane, a P51 and a BF109 that have the same amount of fuel in them will show that the P51 out climbs the BF109, the P51 had an aft fuel tank that when filled added weight to it that the BF109 didn't, P51's engines would be drawing on this fuel tank for taking off and climbing to altitude, then it would switch to it's external stores, after that upon encountering the enemy they would jettison their external tanks. Then once in this configuration, which is when the two would typically meet, the P51 can out climb the BF109 easily. Check the NACA reports and you'll see this, another myth repeated by aviation writers is the climbing rate of a P47 vs a BF109 or an FW190 and even the Spitfire, climbing rates are commonly measured starting at sea level, but if you read the NACA reports you'll see that once at the altitude that most air combat happened at over Europe (20,000 ft or so) the P47 out climbs all of them even with the early narrow propeller, as a matter of fact at combat altitudes the P47 can not only turn inside of an FW190 it can gain altitude while it's in it's tighter turn and at the same time the FW190 will be losing altitude in it's wider turn, the NACA reports prove all this. Rating WW2 aircraft and their engines is a tricky thing, you have to look at what circumstances and altitudes they are rated at, if you look at the ratings at the altitudes and configurations that the planes typically met up with each other for combat you'll be surprised at the results. Aviation writers who write books write them with one thing in mind, selling books, what that means is they know what the fanboys of a particular plane want to hear so they'll pick the ratings from conditions that'll favor that plane to make it look superior to others, realistically rating these planes in the conditions that they met for battle tells a whole different story.

Just some constructive criticism: Your video is EXCELLENT on all respects, except that it becomes difficult to watch the two aircraft in action, while trying to read a continuous data-stream scrolling across the bottom. I suggest a periodic 15-second or so stop of the video while inserting a 'still' data list (of capabilities and comparisons) for the viewer to read... whereupon after a short pause the video restarts. Just a suggestion. Thanks!

Alot of people don't know that the inline 109 is basically a "big block" compared to the P-51. Less boost with poor gas kept the performance below P-51's for most models.

The engine of the 109 was defenetly the stronger one - since all variants after the G6 included the MW50 system that boosted the G10 up to 1800 and the K4 with C3 fuel up to 2000hp while a P51 with 150 octane fuel could get a maximum of about 1800 horsepower - that is the strongest Configuration you can possibly get with the P51. The Plane had a lot of factors that made it good - the engine was good but nothing completely advanced. To reach high speeds at any altitude the P51 had a laminar flow like desgin that reduced drag and allowed the aircraft to achieve high speeds without 2000 or more horsepower, it also gave the P51 it's "turn and burn" ability which allowed the pilot to Pull very tight turns by sacrificing speed. But that desgin had also drawbacks: the wings produced less lift due to the desgin what made the P51 a nightmare for it's pilots at low speed. The climbing ability as well as the turn and energy fight ability was also limited since you get some problems once you drop below 400 kph. It also didn't maintain energy that well since you have very limited lift. Oof guess I told enough nerd stuff for today 😅 hope you don't take the comment as an offense.

What a blast I had as a kid back in the early 60's when they had plastic model airplanes of these, I think by Revell. Testors, glue and paint, and bunches of parts so it wasn't just a snap together. Mustang, P-38, Spitfire, Hellcat, Daunless, Douglas, Thunderbolt, F-4U Corsair,, Zero, Komet, Folke Wolf, Dornier, B-24, B-17, B29 etc etc.

Laminar-Flow wing technology developed at NASA/Ames wind-tunnel facility contributed greatly to P-51 ability to perform> Also, production facilities paid attention to an extra SMOOTH aluminum skin> Results were more speed Laminar-Flow wings appear to be like GLIDER wings, a short CORD to Wingspan ratio (skinny wings) Purpose is to reduce drag by reducing turbulent flow over a THICK wing
@bluefox94364 жыл бұрын
Yeah laminar flow desgin was a big deal for the P51 - even if it had some drawbacks.
@dukecraig24024 жыл бұрын
The laminar flow wing wasn't designed by the NACA, it was only tested and assigned an airfoil # there, as a matter of fact the NACA tests showed that the benefits of it were not only negligible but also that they basically did not work "as advertised", also they were totally negated by ANY imperfections including those from manufacturing, shipping and even just bug strikes would cancel what little effect they did have. What makes a laminar flow wing is not the cord to wingspan ratio, on a laminar flow wing the thickest part of the wing is moved from the leading edge rearward some, the cross section was just as thick but moved rearward a little. B24's also had a laminar flow wing but it wasn't referred to as a laminar flow wing on them, on the B24 it was called a "Davis Wing" but that's only because the name of the guy who designed the wing for the B24 was named Davis.

Great video, two awesome warbirds. Wish I'd been there to see them in person. I have to somewhat disagree with one statement... They said the 109 was one of the most advanced designs of the Era. That's only partly true. It was very advanced when it was introduced in the 1930s, but the demands and advances of the war saw the 109 becoming almost obsolete by 1944. Many aircraft, British, American, and German, were far more advanced in design and aerodynamic technology than the venerable Bf109. Again, great video, great sounds.

B Baron actually no. The 109 was probably a better plane, but Germany from 1943 used low quality fuel, and all the bf109 in the western front used gunpods to hunt bombers. With gunpods they could easily shot down a bomber but the extra weight compromised a lot the performance of the planes.
