Graphics are increasingly amazing - aerial ballets. Ambs and his mate were very fortunate to bale out of a 262. Most early jets, including the Meteor were lethal, not being fitted with ejector seats. The canopy was very, very hard to open against the air pressure at that speed, and you stood a good chance of being hit by your own tail plane or rudder.

@nedstewart13 жыл бұрын
They did a terrific job protecting the bombers...but were dead last in kills as P-51 pilots for the 15th. Army Corp. You could not destroy the German Air Force staying with the bombers. That's why in 1943 Gen Jimmy Doolittle ordered all fighters abandon bomber protection and seek out and destroy the German Air Force when he was commander of the 8th. & later 15th. Army Air Corp. This tactic worked and come D-day as a result of this order the allies owned the sky's over Europe. The Tuskegee Airmen under Col. Davis did not follow this order. Also on the same raid the 31st.. Fighter Group shot down 5 German jets...making it a total of 8 German jets shot down over Berlin by the 15th. Army Air Corp. 3 by the Tuskegee Airmen and 5 by the 31st..Fighter Group. Also over 60 German jets had already been shot by the 8th. Army Air Corp before this raid on 24 April 1945. A German jet had already been shot down one year before this raid unlike what this video claims. Below is Gen. Doolittles orders for the fighters to abandon bomber protection in 1943 and seek out and destroy the German Air Force.
@nedstewart13 жыл бұрын
Escort fighter tactics Doolittle's major influence on the European air war occurred late in 1943 when he changed the policy requiring escorting fighters to remain with their bombers at all times, allowing fighter escorts to fly far ahead of the bombers' combat box formations in air supremacy mode. Throughout most of 1944, this tactic negated the effectiveness of the twin-engined Zerstörergeschwader heavy fighter wings and single-engined Sturmgruppen of heavily armed Fw 190As by clearing the Luftwaffe's bomber destroyers from ahead of the bomber formations. After the bombers had hit their targets, the American fighters were free to strafe German airfields and transportation on their return to base. These tasks were initially performed with Lockheed P-38 Lightnings and Republic P-47 Thunderbolts through the end of 1943. They were progressively replaced with the long-ranged North American P-51 Mustangs as the spring of 1944 wore on
@martinkent28223 жыл бұрын
They did a great job when they were mainly bombing targets but by the time they got to escort bombers the war was practically over and the Germans had almost no experienced fighters and some were even kids. I don't mean to take anything away from them but it is fact.
@nedstewart13 жыл бұрын
On 5:50 it was falsely reported that Brown shot down the first German jet. This was a bigger lie than the Tuskegee Airmen never lost a bomber. Brown was not the first to shoot down a German jet. The only jet he shot down was on March 24th.1945. The 8th. Army Air corp had already shot down over 60 German jets before that date. Moreover, on the day three Tuskegee Airmen shot down three German jets over Berlin raid on March 24, 1945, five other American pilots of the 31st. Fighter Group Fifteenth Air Force, on the same mission, with the 31st. Fighter Group, also shot down 5 German Me-262 jets. They included Colonel William A. Daniel, 1st Lt. Forrest M. Keene, 1st Lt Raymond D. Leonard, Capt. Kenneth T. Smith, and 2nd Lt. William M. Wilde. On the Berlin raid Tuskegee Airmen shot down 3 German Jets. The 31st Fighter Group shot down 5 German jets on the same raid. Bringing the total of 8 German jets shot down by the 15th.Army Air Corp. over Berlin.

@@keithjackson4985 I object to the mythology that has shrouded them. It is the soft bigotry of lowered expectations that just being a mediocre pilot is some sort of achievement worth glorifying. Let me ask you a question. Have you ever heard of the 761st Tank Battalion? They were an all black armored unit. Like the Tuskegee Airmen it was believed that black soldiers could not operate complex machinery and grasp the complexities of armored warfare. Not only did the 761st prove them wrong but they were ACTUALLY one of the most effective US armored units of WW2. When no other white generals wanted them Patten said give them to me. The battalion received a Presidential Unit Citation for its actions. In addition, a large number of individual members also received medals, including one Medal of Honor, 11 Silver Stars and about 300 Purple Hearts. The unit has been called "one of the most effective tank battalions in World War II. Do these American heroes EVER get mentioned? He would have had a lot more but the US Army Air Corp kept pulling him out of combat for months at a time out of fear he would be eventually shot down and it would be a huge propaganda win for the Japanese. Thanks for mentioning that. All German soldiers who did not belong to the Nazis simply fought for their country, no they had to. If they did not fight for their country there were only 2 options either option 1 flee with great risk of being caught and then option 2 go to the concentration camp to die.

The Tuskegee airmen are said to have had a higher percentage of successfully escorting more bombers back to base than any other fighter group in WWII.
@ey72903 жыл бұрын
1/2 true. Bomber losses under their watch were lower than the average (not by much they lost around 30 bombers under their escorts, the average was 35-40) but their were escort squadrons that lost fewer bombers on missions

@@kevinflaherty1 no, Black History is NOT racism. You do not get to make up your own definition of racism because the subject matter makes you uncomfortable. Nowhere are you seeing the teaching or dominance, superiority, or hatred and marginalizing of others, which are racist traits. Teaching the history of marginalized people who have been deliberately cut out of history on a selective basis for 4 centuries is something that anyone on the right side of good vs EVIL should understand and endorse.
