Yakovlev YAK3 D-FYAC
Pilot: Gerhard Bumüller @Degerfeld Airshow 2018
Engine Start, Takeoff and Display flight.
The Yakovlev Yak-3 (Russian: Я́ковлев Як-3) was a World War II Soviet fighter aircraft. Robust and easy to maintain, it was much liked by pilots and ground crew alike. It was one of the smallest and lightest major combat fighters fielded by any combatant during the war. Its high power-to-weight ratio gave it excellent performance. It proved a formidable dogfighter. Marcel Albert, World War II French ace, who flew the Yak in USSR with the Normandie-Niémen Group, considered it a superior aircraft when compared to the P-51D Mustang and the Supermarine Spitfire. After the war ended, it was flown by the Yugoslav and Polish Air Forces.

Finally get to see/hear this particular Yak alone. Another vid shows this and a 3 bladed yak together which is an interesting compare, but this example has an interesting and unique sound all on its own. A P-39/63 (same engine/prop roughly) has the isolated reduction gearbox and a different ratio to the engine so it doesn't sound alike. But when the yak really winds up in the dive it nearly does sound like the Hispano Suiza V-12 in the MS. 406, which it originally had more or less a licenced copy of.

The Allison engine did sound very good, but the sound from the original Klimov 105 engine is a bit different, but none aircraft did now fly with the original Klimov because they are very rare and no parts available...Same thing with the Hispano Suiza Y12 (Dewoitine D520) who is the base engine from the klimov (USSR did buy the licence in France before the war), but one Morane D3800 (swiss made Morane 406, now under french colors) did fly with a Hispano Suiza Y12-77 (made under license by Saurer). The Y12 engine was nicknamed "moteur canon" (canon engine) because did integrate a 20mm Hispano Suiza 404 canon between the cylinders , firing through the propeller shaft was very reliable and accurate, but hold a only 60 shots magazine...The HS404 canon, modified to make it able to work in the wings, was use from many allied aircrafts...

@@Warbirds. You are exactly right. The Allison engine out-performed any other engine in WWII. Used in the Spitfires and Mustangs. The Yak-3 version is certainly founded on the Spitfire platform, but without the wide elliptical wing of which doesn't make any sense to me under-performed. Also, they ran out of fuel much quicker than the Spitfires and Mustangs, even the Thunderbolts... What also amazes me is that the Russians decided to build their own variant rather than obtaining the new Spitfire MKIV's if I have that number right. Or maybe Britain didn't allow it. I don't know on the politics, just saying, the Yak 3 could have been even better. But, who cares, that was long ago anyway. LoL
