Not a question but your answer to the one about the ship being self -sustaining. I was in the US Navy and other than fuel and food, the water and waste situation was completely self sustaining! While I wasn't and engineer in the Navy, I had to understand the basics for a qualification I took. And I have been on two cruise ships since leaving the Navy (Celebrity and RCL) and those ships were completely 'self-sustaining' in that respect. But love you your honesty and energy from the rest of this interview!

Couldn’t agree more with the views on long distance relationships. I’m a truck driver in Australia so spend good amount of time away from home and my wife is a nurse so her schedule varies so much that we can go weeks without any decent amount off time together. So when we get some time together we try and do something special to make it count. Think it improves the relationship at times as we know how valuable time together is.

If someone is fired or on the verge of being fired, the ship stations 24-hour security outside the person's room? That means at least two - or, more realistically, three - members of the security staff devoting about 100% of their work time just standing as security for the fired person. Does the ship even have the manpower resources for that? The problem gets even worse if more than one person at a time is being fired.

I can answer that: why Americans (or Canadians) find it hard to get jobs aboard cruise ships. Most cruise ships are registered in countries with very different labour laws; and the ships country of registry determines the labour standards. In many cases, thats Liberia. For Royal Caribbean, that's the Bahamas. For crews who live around the world, its a step upwards - great pay, etc...but for a North American based person, the workplace standards may be *lower* than home.

Americans Working on Cruise Ship---2 disincentives for Americans not working on cruise ships. 1) USA tax laws, tax Americans & their incomes no-matter where it is earned. IE The British to not have to pay income taxes while working outside the British Isles; however, American do pay taxes on income earned anywhere in the world, Federal income taxes, Social Security, & possibly State Income taxes. 2) All service jobs pay very low wages so Americans would not want them, while folks in Asia do.
