Thank you! I had someone give us a quote of $1200 just to replace the porch steps! You’ve helped give me the confidence to do it ourselves and save a lot of money. ❤

Gosh, that seems like a very high estimate - perhaps they just didn't want the work. Anyway, it's a very neat job Tom and I certainly learned about this Torx head screws. Thanks mate.

2:30 here in Canada I'd only use Robertson head (square head) screws. I find you can really torque then down well Phillips head screws would be a nightmare.

I just had an estimate for a 8x16 porch 4 feet Hugh with nine stairs for $ 16k. And that was the cheapest. Found a guy to replace what needed, since the structure is good. Less than $3k with material and labor (stairs had to be rebuilt). Beats the hell our of $16k

I helped a friend do the same thing. Feels good to save 13k :-)

Howdy, I really appreciate how practical you made those repairs. Can you do a video explaining, how homeowners can protect their wood. I have a covered wrap around porch. The original Florida construction was about 12 years ago. It is painted, floor is concrete, however about 3yrs ago when I was pressure washing. Some paint spots lifted on the wood bannister & handrail . I would like to pressure wash again, but I'm concerned about damaging it. My question is how do I reseal to protect, do I have to strip all the existing paint off 1st? How often should a reseal be done? BTW some of the paint is flaky... Thanks again 😊

You make it look so easy! Well now I know that I’m not paying 2K. My porch is structurally sound just looks terrible from the paint wear.

A power wash and a couple coats of Behr deck stain might be all you need.

So how do I get this done at mine? The porch is fine but there is quite a bit of rot on the treads and the risers. I cannot afford to replace the whole thing and am willing to do the work. It's 6 steps

Yes, in a sense, it's nice one cannot post links here on the tubage because there's a link on here to that clip from the "Dumb and Dumber" movie where they're in that "Mutt Cut" rig and Harry poses the question of, "Hey. Wanna hear the most annoying sound in the world? AHH-HHHH-HHHH-HHHH-HHHH-HHHH-HHHH-HHHH-HHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!" 🙃 As for the porch, on this end, can DEFINITELY attest to using Torx (R) bits. Another advantage of those worth passing along is that with Torx (R) screws and the accompanying bit, the screw-to-bit gripping strength is VASTLY improved over a Phillip's screw big time, ESPECIALLY when it comes to those longer deck-type screws. And no, you don't wanna use a drill, again, ESPECIALLY on a deck screw. (LOL! Ask me how I know that...) 😉

What’s the size of the wood board that you used for this project sir?

I think those were 1x12. If you are replacing wood, you can measure the old ones.

Im a deck contractor and curiously watched your video. I believe the quote was to totally demo and build the porch back to up to date standards. It clearly wasnt properly flashed or attached to the house. The handrails were not secure and stable enough to prevent fall protection also. Im not knocking your video. Its great instruction for diy'ers. I just thought I'd share my opinion about the quote. Not sure of your location but thats a bit high in my area.
@AlleyPicked9 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comments. You are the professional and I am just a DIY'er. Not everyone can afford a new porch. As long as it wasn't dangerous, sometimes a quick and dirty cheap fix is the way to go and it's way better than it was.

@@AlleyPicked you are 100% correct. I have done a few repairs that were on a very limited budget. A budget friendly fix will get you by until you can afford a total replacement sometimes. 👍

Man, Only 3 grand? That'd never happen in Aust. They'd Start at 8 grand and end at over 10- but only for a pocket handkerchief sized deck - anything else the sky would be the limit
