To get that amount of photo realism done in that time is an absolute miracle.

Can you imagine, even here in the Netherlands I wait with impatience for every episode! Obivously, off ALL the years this series is going, Bruno is the worst sitter ever. Aplause to any of the artists who can still make a portrait of him!

Ramon! Ramon! Ramon! His painting was luminous. It was far and away the best of the three. So sad he didn't win.

For all the people calling tracing "cheating", I would kindly remind them that no one stopped the other contestants from tracing as well. I'm not a fan of tracing because I find it boring, but for anyone who's ever attempted painting at least once, it is obvious that the initial sketch is only a tiny part of the whole piece. Secondly, knowing what to trace is key and is an art in itself. You also have to get rid of the stiffness that tracing introduces, which isn't easy. Finally, you can get a perfect sketch with the grid method. Is that cheating as well?

Interesting competition this one. I thought Ramon's was spectacular. The tracing issue seems a bit contentious but I liked the outcome. Thanks for sharing this experience all the same.
@betty84442 ай бұрын
Tracing over is so not fair towards the other competitors. Yeah, you can do how much tracing you want for your private art commissions, but not in a competition. The judges shouldn't let her win.

It is not cross stitch. Cross stitch is defined by the Xs done across the fabric. This was needlework or maybe embroidery.

If YOLANDA was a UK SUPREME COURT JUDGE, Ramon would be the winner. The composition of the face is astonishing and has a brilliant portrait style. My winner pick is EMILY'S BRUNO portrait. She captured the real Bruno, the spine of his true being which is very conservative even in the midst of his cirque du soleil rounds. Ideally, I would have preferred a single rose with a firm stem. I'm not going to prize an, etch a sketch. Just curious, how does needlepoint qualify here?
@jillp37612 ай бұрын
Surely the goal is to create a likeness, why quarrel about the use of medium, why sould we be limited? Just because paints were usually used we now have a wealth of mediums and techniques. Makes judging harder but expands the mind of the viewer and encourages experimentation 🎉
@celebratelife84362 ай бұрын
I wholeheartedly agree, Emily's was the strongest painting especially since she was painting a Restless sitter directly from life instead of Copying directly from a Photograph that was printed on carbon copy paper or copying from a tablet or cell phone. As far as the needlepoint goes I guess as long as The medium can be used to create a portrait then it qualifies.

Karen, the photorealist painter, had no business being in the final three. SHE TRACED THE LIKENESS! I am an award winner portrait painter. It takes a lot longer to draw an accurate likeness than to trace it. This is a timed competition. Allowing artists to trace the likeness is a slippery slope. Do I sometimes trace? Yes. Just the placement of the facial features and head shape. But never in a contest! I think that's cheating. Show all your skills.

Agree 100%. I, too, am a portrait artist in shock that this was allowed, let alone picked as winner.
@jillp37612 ай бұрын
Somehow my post expressing my complete disgust that someone should be allowed to TRACE in a timed competition got lost or removed. That it gave her an immense advantage over the others time wise shocked me; that she ended up in the final 3 incensed me so much I couldn't/wouldn't watch the rest of the video. Boo on the judges
@TatKry2 ай бұрын
I agree and disagree at the same time. On the one hand, an artist should be able to draw from life, on the other hand, only the final result matters to the viewer. I liked Karen's result.
@celebratelife84362 ай бұрын
Absolutely, figuring out the structure of the face and getting the proportions right is The most difficult part of painting a realistic portrait what she did was just the icing in the cake, Like putting make up on a person if she wanted to prove that she could be a good make up artist then she did a good job at that. In originality she failed completely
@lc99022 ай бұрын
I could not believe my eyes when she started tracing. Clever technique but definitely not for the winner. Not even for one of the three. It was an insult to the other hard working portrait artist. The outcome wasn't either good.
@pjlewisful2 ай бұрын
Karen should not have been allowed to simply trace and color like a coloring book. I liked the Nigerian guy and the older gentleman the best.
@jillp37612 ай бұрын
I was OUTRAGED that she traced in a competition thus giving her a REAL time advantage, and turned off the rest of the video because seeing her in the final 3 made me so annoyed that if she should WIN was TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE 😑 😒
@SKN17632 ай бұрын
I find tracing the sitter’s face is a bit of a cheat. Others are taking time to do a drawing, which is a big part of getting the likeness - and this artist is simply tracing the face.
@brendawillems48042 ай бұрын
That process is absolutely not simple. Try it some time and you will see
@ElisabethHeinemann2 ай бұрын
If you use tracing as a template for painting-by-numbers as several so called artists are doing nowadays, then I do agree. But she has a level of detail and therefore skills, that is far beyond the usual "tracing artists".

The other two portraits of Helen were better than Karen’s. She shouldn’t have been allowed to trace hers and it still wasn’t as good as the other two. Hers had such a sharp edge between the face and background. Shame on the judges for allowing the tracing (cheating?) and then for choosing it in the final three.
@celebratelife84362 ай бұрын
Exactly!!!! Tracing the Photograph of the sitter Should not be allowed in this competition if that's the case then every one should be given a printer and carbon copy paper to do the exact same thing, shame on everyone who allowed this And shame on Karen for cheating so brazenly!!! She Didn't deserve to win and what's the point of Making a painting that looks exactly like a picture? How is that even art? The Sharp edge coupled with that beige color and the blurry edges of the shirt and the bottom looked hideous and cheap I think the only reason why she won is because she was attractive 😆
@jillp37612 ай бұрын
Gritted myteeth and watched to the end. That to all intents the fact that they chose what I considered to be a cheated portrait horrified me; the time advantage gave her much extra time to actually PAINT, she didn't have to create a likeness she traced it in at most 10 minutes giving her 3 hrs an 50 minutes to actually PAINT. BOO HISS TO THE " JUDGES " SHAME ON THEM.......
@celebratelife84362 ай бұрын
How come the other artists didn't get a Photograph Printed on carbon copy paper to trace the outlines too?Karen's painting just seems utterly disingenuous, more like cheating and paint by numbers! It's also insulting and disrespectful to the sitter who had to sit there for 4 hours when the winner of the competition does not even work from life, and literally Traces and copies a photo! Unbelievable! How did the judges get fooled or how much did Karen pay to get away with this? Something is not right. If she ends up winning the final competition then this is definitely rigged, she obviously had the upper hand because half the work was already done for her when she traced over the Carbon copy paper! By tracing the outlines and facial structure, she didn't have to figure out Helen Sharman's face proportions on her own like all the other artists did! To be fair, she was able to paint a photorealistic portrait from a picture in four hours, which is admirable but that's just "icing on a cake she didn't even bake!", and the painting didn't even look complete against that tacky beige background. A better option for the background would have been the colored wall or a different solid color. This was a very disappointing outcome, what is the point of painting a portrait exactly like the Photograph of the sitter and what is the point in having a sitter sit for 4 hours if the winner is going to be tracing directly from a photograph? This is lame
