Thanks for this. I wish the audio track in the timeline would change to show the effects of the dialogue leveler. As an amateur I look at the audio track and see no changes and get confused. Hope that makes sense. Thanks again!

You’re welcome, and I agree! Visual references are important!

Could you use the more in debth compressor within the voice channel. And then use everything else in the dialogue process minus the compressor there ?

This is some aweeeesome information and I appreciate it very very much; but whyyyyyy the background music on a sound editing tutorial? Why using background music in a tutorial anyway? But still, thank you so much for explaining. This helped me a lot! 🙂

Glad it was helpful. I tried to duck the music when needed. In terms of why there is music; there’s been lots of discussion on this and the general consensus is music keeps people’s attention more believe it or not. But people will complain either way. Impossible to please everyone

Hey great video! I did have a question that you may or may not be able to answer. I don't know if you have any experience with OBS but I record my audio and video through there and use some of their filters like compression, limiter, etc. The compressor isn't nearly as good as the one in resolve, but id say it does help the audio a lot especially when streaming as well, but does it make sense to use compression or limiters basically twice on your audio between OBS and Davinci? Not sure if that makes sense to do or if it even might hurt the quality of the audio. Appreciate it!

Thanks! - It really depends on how much each effect is being used. Compression can be used twice and it's not really an issue. They can be used for different things too; the one in OSB can be strictly to control input levels so you don't get peaking, whereas the one in Resolve could then be used to change the sound of the audio so that it sounds more compressed and 'harsh'. Compressing too much can definitely hurt the audio though; I'd suggest trying it out though and seeing if you can find a good balance, chances are you can. Hope that helps!

I'd love to see an in depth tutorial on proper vocal processing.

Thanks for the comment! For professional dialogue in video production, there’s not a lot that happens in comparison to vocals in professional music production; but there is definitely some EQ, and other effects and filters applied 👍

I’ve tried other ways to level my audio and your options are working best, thanx

For just a hobbyist doing travel style shooting and vlogging would you recommend the Rode Go Lavs or Rode Video Mic Pro+? I see you guys use & recommend both but I can only really afford one. This would be more for any vacation trips/family gatherings I have.
@AlliandWill3 ай бұрын
If you’re talking a lot to camera, probably the Go lavs, but for picking up just general audio from the day then the video mic pro+. We usually don’t use lavs for vlogging. We just make sure whoever is talking to camera is no further than 3-4 feet and is talking at a good volume
@ChessBoxin3 ай бұрын
@@AlliandWill alright cool thanks. I just had an experience in Japan where vlogging in many areas can seem as a little disrespectful so I thought lavs were a little more discrete and not as loud. I felt like a camera lens alone if big enough was already too much in public (Subways and some temples).
@AlliandWill3 ай бұрын
That makes sense! In that scenario Lavs are probably a better choice!

what efx do you put on master channel when bouncing out?
@AlliandWill2 ай бұрын
That highly depends on the project Im working on, but mostly I use a limiter, maybe some light compression or eq; nothing crazy.

(Davinci 19.0.1) Argh, I cannot FIND the dialogue leveler! When I select my audio track, then go to Inspector then Audio tab, I only see Volume, Pan, Pitch, Speed Change, and Equalizer--no Dialogue Leveler, and no Voice Isolation. What am I missing? ETA: I have the free version, so as I understand it the Voice Isolation is not an option for me, but the Dialogue Leveler IS supposed to be available!!
@AlliandWillАй бұрын
What about in version 19.1.1?
@BasedBuildersАй бұрын
@@AlliandWill Just upgraded to 19.1.1, and nope, no change. I've been just plain upgrading since 18 came out, so maybe I messed up some setting back then that I no longer remember? Can't imagine what it would be, though. I record in OBS as MKVs (60 FPS), although I just did a test of remuxing it to an MP4, but no change. Sigh. the Dialogue Leveler would save me SOOOOooo much editing time, if it works anything like how I imagine. Sure hope to try it one day! Thanks for the quick response.

@@AlliandWill Ah HA! Figured it out: I'd done my OBS recording in Surround Sound. Dialogue Leveler only appears for audio recorded in Stereo or Mono. (Haven't tested Mono, but I just tested Stereo and it appeared.)
