Honestly love the small detail of Fern acknowledging Frieren's power or "the height of magic". Most of the other mages would've been scared or shocked. Fern was just happy and proud of Frieren. Also goes to show how powerful Fern is and will become.

@@oneeyedk1ng_02 she was prodigy or like born as a genius and she may eventually accomplish more things in the future, but it's still quite far away + in the setting of this world, not everyone is invicible when it comes to the philosophy of one spell can counter another spell, one person may be capable of exploiting other weakness combining with combat experiences blah blah...it made things pretty complex just like Methode said, it's complex rock-paper-scissor. In this specific case, Methode is testing out that the weakness of Fern is relating to restraining spells which is also one of her specialties as well. And then they was like "she is gonna end up dying" 🤣; Speaking of mana only, that lady has already closed or equal to Frieren's concealed mana and already have a vibe of veteran.

Yes, the mage exam takes place 30 years after the Death of Himmel the Hero, and Himmel died 50 years after defeating the Demon King. Also, keep in mind that the other 3 members of the Hero's Party were not to be trifled with either. All 4 of them were so far beyond what most other people could ever hope to be that it was insane. And it took all 4 of them to take the Demon King down. Additionally, the Demon King has been attacking the Elves, Dwarves, and Humans for millennia. The only thing holding him back was other demons and their inability to work together. While that was happening, all three of the other races, working together, only managed to hold on and keep the Demons contained in the Northern third of the continent. It was only until Himmel, Frieren, Eisen and Heiter came along that anyone even got close to the Demon King's fortress. That fight was ...... beyond insane.

Fern was the “immediate threat” not the “bigger” one. Fern was only able to strike the clone at all because the actual Frieren was battling her. What that scene shows is how Frieren CAN get annoyed and a bit vindictive if someone actually manages to hit her. That was a “fuck around and find out” moment. Had fern entered that arena alone it would not have taken the pinnacle of magic spell to defeat her. The clone simply would have killed her. In no way shape or form is current fern a threat to Frieren in an actual match.

She already knew Fern wasn't going to be the one drawing aggro (Fern would be waaaay too weak for that), but she would be able to score on an assist set up by the original Frieren. In that moment, Fern was the one throwing the vast majority of the direct attacks while Frieren was setting up during the clone's downtime lack of mana detection, so the only person visible and attacking the clone, was Fern. No other known targets/threats at that point, so Fern ended up taking the hit.

The anime minimized it, but Methode destroyed Fern’s replica alone and didn’t even seem tired. Even the choice of who would fight her own replica wasn’t about power: she told a cute girl to go, because she loves cute thing and would pull her punches. I think she’s around dunken’s level, maybe slightly weaker (and he’s actually a beast, next arc will show it more).

The last move that Frieren's clone did wasn't a spell since Fern also said she didn't detect any mana nor magic while the clone used it. And in the past episodes Frieren already discussed that Curses are something that mages can't comprehend. In other words, Frieren is so OP she can also use a curse, the same thing she used during her battle with the Demon King since the last time she was forced to used it was 80 years ago.

@@Korksbebig It's pretty much implied that it is a form of a demon curse magic or another type of curse. Up to now, even in the manga, curses are the only thing that doesn't rely on mana nor can't be detected as a spell and is very complicated to human mages that even Fern can't comprehend what was used against her. A dying Frieren would certainly have a last resort to take enemies with her, and curses activates automatically if it happens. After all, curses are typically created by deep hatred/wrath or the desire to get revenge. The only other probable theory is that it's an ancient magic that only elves know which wasn't explained in the manga yet.

It was the combined effort of all of her party and had anyone faltered they would have lost. What Heiter stated was trusting her to fight the demon king, not just carry them.
