Aura actually didn't underestimate her though, if anything she was being EXTREMELY cautious aroundher. It's her confidence on her innate skills that doomed her because she had checked the possibility of Ftieren restraining her mana and everything she could in order to assure her win. If anything, frieren is the abnormal one here as if it was any other mage, they would have lost too even if they tried restraining their mana

People don't seem to get why Frieren and Flamme think it's so distasteful to hide their mana but the thing is hiding your mana isn't just disrespectful and unfair toward demons (who cares what they think) but toward magic itself. You should imagine hiding your mana as the same thing as a chess grandmaster pretending that he's an amateur so that he could easily win a beginner's tournament. Even if they do it for an extremely good reason and even if their opponent did something to deserve it, it's disrespectful not just for their opponent but for chess itself, it makes a mockery of it. And Frieren loves magic. So it hurts her to have to make a mockery of something she loves even if it's for a very good reason.

28:09 Something to note here. Every other human/elven mage we see in the series generally uses a staff or wand to cast offensive magic. Clearly it's something to focus their magic, to make the casting easier or stronger or something along those lines. Before the fight with Lügner, Fern has to recover hers before she can fight back. Even Frieren uses a staff. But we never see Flamme with one.

30 years ago, most of these people would not have been the least bit intrested in anime. Times have changed, people are starting to see amazing stories in a huge portion of them. I think "mourner" is more closely to this word of sousou(葬送). Because at the story begin, Frieren attend the funeral of Himmel, this the first mean of "sousou". But now, author told us this title how was been known as by demons. So translate "sousou no Frieren" to "Frieren, the Slayer" is more clearly in this plot. But actually mean of this story title is "Frieren, the Mourner". How fun of this! Slayer is not original intention of sousou(葬送), but there are twice means at this story.

As with all cultural differences, its hard to be exact on why we laugh here while you may not. For this specific case, you should recall for most of us westerners self-harm is among the ultimate taboos, on par with murder in the gravity of sin. There is no honor in it, only those with no hope for the future would consider it. So, telling someone to do so is among the most insulting ways of telling them they are useless and their life is not worth living. Seeing Frieren use it here is also telling us that Aura is not worth the expenditure of even a small amount of Frieren's considerable mana to destroy personally. I think it is Aura's fall from a place of great Pride to receiving the worst imaginable disrespect that we westerners find ourselves laughing at, not because it is funny but instead out of ironic justice. Humbling the prideful is ... cathartic. I hope this translates well.
