@TeguBuzz8 жыл бұрын
Haha, go back a few videos and watching my other alligator snapping turtle video. Much bigger ones handled in that vid. Takes quite some time, slow and steady growth is the best when it comes to these. Growth rates vary though!

Where do you put all these reptiles at! :o. Do you have a habitat for all of them?
@chenderhan7 жыл бұрын
How old were they here? Mine's a little under a year and a bit bigger than these guys. Have you tried any other vegetation for them to eat? Any reason for the pinecones/tannins? Sorry to bombard you with questions-- great video, I subscribed!
@zekefrago38367 жыл бұрын
chenderhan he put the pinecones in to make the water change color so the turtles blend in
@jonathonpevehouse3641 Жыл бұрын
You might have had it less then a year but if it's larger probably over 2 years and you have an actual ast that eats vegetation as a baby that's impressive

I live next to a river in New jersey . I found an alligator snapping turtle out in a pile of rocks in my yard about 2 weeks ago. It is about the size of a silver dollar. I want to keep him. But never owned a turtle before. I've been doing research on this species of turtle I'm still in decisive on whether to keep him from what I understand it's not refinance to keep as a pet. But I want to give it a good life and also experience the life and growth of this particular turtle. But on the other hand I can't really afford to invest money into a pet that might turn out to be too much for me to handle Would you recommend I just give it back to nature now while it still young. Or invest and commit? Im just seeking other turtle owners opinion. Thanks!
@TeguBuzz8 жыл бұрын
Hey Kimmy! I would strongly recommend and urge you to return the little guy back to where you found him or a source of water nearby. If you are certain it is an alligator snapper and not a common snapper, it is rather illegal to keep a wild caught specimen across all the states in which they occur in aside from Louisiana. AST's do not make great beginner or even medium advanced turtles for owners. They require quite a bit of care and more. If you are adamant about keeping one and do all the necessary research, then you may have success. However, I would urge you to return this wild one back to its environment and purchase a captive bred one online, from turtleman.com or another reputable source. They cost around $50-60 as hatchlings and the captive individuals are the more safe and legal option when keeping AST's.
@kimfurey61558 жыл бұрын
+TeguBuzz thank you for your honest opinion... I had no idea that it was illegal to have this turtle. Based on the feedback and information I've been getting, I have made the decision to put Oscar back in the Hackensack river where I'm sure he was headed.. Because the River literally runs through my backyard. And the next time I see a snapper I'll admire it and leave it on its way.. Thanks again

There is one major problem with keeping an Alligator Snapping Turtle. It isn't its size or aggressiveness. The big problem is that they have a longer lifespan than any human. Where do they go when you're in some retirement home getting your diaper changed because you can't make it to the bathroom? lol. A snapper is too long of a commitment for one person, maybe if your great grandchildren volunteered for the job. Those turtles will still be young by the time you expire. Just something to think about....
