I can't help but feel sorry for her mom. Like I know she was an asshole. But there's more to her than that. Somewhere in there is someone who really loved Tonya. The standard, one-dimensional abuser doesn't work three jobs, and relentlessly fight a biased judging system (the world of figure skating is very cliquish, affluent, and filled with nepotism) to make their kid into a champion. She really, truly believed Tonya would and could be something amazing. It's sad that her own demons seemed to consume her :/

I spent 19 years living with a loveless mother. I can confidently say with not an ounce of remorse, I feel no sympathy for LaVona. Tonya didn't have a chance. It's a testament to her instinct for survival that she enjoyed some fleeting successes in her life despite having that harpy for a mother. You don't abuse your child who looks to you for protection. That is repugnant to me.

Martha Falker I’m sorry your mom was a sociopath. But your mom didn’t work 3 jobs for you so you could achieve your life’s dream. A truly evil person just doesn’t do that. I know it’s hard, I was abused as a kid too, but you can’t put your abusers face and motives on every person with a personality disorder.

Horrible that a mother who worked THREE jobs to give her daughter her dream is portrayed as a monster. Who is anyone to judge her. The actress said she never even spoke to her mother and didn't care who she was. If someone thinks they are being abused, then stop taking their money and support yourself. Don't say what a b and order room service on their hard earned money. That's using someone. Very sorry for the mother.

she emotionally and physically abused tonya as a child, before and after tonyas only protection, her father left. there is a fucked up power structure there. True she made tonya into a champion but she also broker her, because she was made into someone who only knew skating (her mother even made her drop out of high school to focus on it). We're never gonna know the real story probably but LaVona Harding seems pretty fucked up to me.
