Just bought a Peterbilt with the Allison 4500 6 speed Auto, picked up the truck in Tulsa and drove it to Yuma, after two days on the road, I love love the auto trans!!! Gentle on the truck and driveline as well as me the driver:) The truck is getting a dump bed installed in Yuma, really think it's going to work great for 10 wheeling dirt!!!

To funny, mines a 2014 367 too!!! Has the 455 Paccar, would of liked the Cummins, but I understand that the later Paccars are pretty good too:)

Yeah, I like checking the oil level in this video, as its "just typical" on this truck 4 inches above the "full hot" line. Geez, this unit must be really hot!

One thing I'll never understand is why push-button controls for the automatic transmission for heavy trucks and motorhomes. I remember when cars and trucks had either manually shifting transmission or automatic with a control lever you moved either back and forth, or up and down, depending on what you want the vehicle to do. What prompted the switch to push-button controls?

Jason, They show a T Handle type at 7:00. It's roughly three to four times the cost of the touchpad shifter and doesn't give any more functionality. I always suggest replacing the T Handle with the touchpad shifter for that reason. To each his own.

Allison Automatics first came out 35 yrs. ago when I was in the Army. The Automatics we had were 16 speed with no clutch. I suppose you wouldn't call them Automatics because you shifted, we called them Automatics because there was no clutch. We had a 400 big cam Cummings for an engine and we hauled everything the Army had and it did it with ease. Allison over the years got rid of the shifting, it went from 16 speed to 5 and to what you now have. I have never driven what they have now so I have no idea how they perform nut I see a lot of construction Co. going to them because a lot of people can't drive a 13 speed fuller and the Co. are sick and tired of doing clutch jobs every year so they figure the Automatics are cheaper.

drayhazel so it was a semi automatic transmission I can only drive the automatics because I have palsy in my right arm I pass the DOT test them in school on one of the top in my class to learn how to drive a semi when did push button automatics come out
@TeeroyHammermill7 жыл бұрын
The military transmission you're referring to was not the Allisson. It was the Caterpillar 7155 16 speed airshift. The allissons were used later in the deuce and a half and 5ton trucks. Then the HEMTT used the alisson as well. Alissons have a very high failure rate when used in a heavy duty application. They use 10w oil for lube and the oil can get up to 350 degrees F when towing causing the transmission to either shut down or destroy itself.

I don't drive a big rig yet, (studying for my permit) but the thought of an auto doesn't scare me. Have been driving box trucks for almost 10 years with autos and in city conditions I would take them over a stick any day. The truck I drive now has a 6 speed previous truck was a 5 speed and the backup truck has a 4 speed. The technology that has been put into them is amazing and I think the industry should embrace it instead of saying its for sissies and all of that. Yes, knowing how to drive a manual is important but the driver shortage has forced the hand of the companies to figure out how to get qualified drivers into the seat. Just because you can't or don't know how to shift gears doesn't mean you are less of a driver. In actuality taking hand off the wheel is more dangerous than having an automatic. It takes a fraction of a second to get in a wreck.

How do you do a tug test on these trucks for CDL pre trip at the dmv? Mainly to check the air brake tug test?? I try putting it on drive when the brake is engaged but it just stays in neutral

That’s reduced engine load at stop. That’s programming for fuel economy. It can be changed.

I can't stand hearing truck drivers say how much they just love this AUTO SHIFT. Auto goes against everything I have been applying for 20 years. Transmissions dont know road surface conditions. It's too much to explain in a short comment. Auto might be nice for for sunny day drivers, but I need to choose the right gear based on that specific snow texture in that moment, and a million other factors. You have to balance many principles at the same time with RPM with momentuem, with terrain, with weight, with traction, with torque, I need to feel what ALL tires are doing especially drives and steers. There is so much more to discussed, but not here in short comments.

I've been driving allison automatics for over 20 years now as well as manual shift including 2 speed rearends. I don't understand why anyone would possibly prefer a manual over the automatic UNLESS you're talking about some heavy hauler semi with 18 forward gears grossing over 100k pounds regularly. Most of what I drive are class 8 straight trucks with GVW in the 35k to 54k range. I love to take off side by side with a comparable sized truck at a traffic light where the other truck is a manual.....eat them for lunch ALL DAY LONG, uphill or down. Wouldn't trade my Allison automatic for all the sorry manual transmissions I could possibly haul with my automatic! And a two speed rear axle, while perhaps useful at some point in history, is about the dumbest damn thing ever invented! Get the damn thing hung in between high and low and you're usually SCREWED and have to start all over again....the same driver on the same truck regularly does help prevent that however. Now, you're going to argue fuel economy. Well, I've got the same truck GVW with comparable engine specs now with the Allison I had 10 years ago with a 5 speed manual / 2 speed rearend, running the same loads on the same routes. I bet there's not 1% difference in fuel economy.....can't even measure it myself.

@TeamTopKick4 жыл бұрын
@@herndondumptrucking drive in D. If going up a steep grade you can either leave it in d and tap the brake and it will down shift and press the go pedal to build speed or if your not to high rpm manualy downshift it and hold thay gear till you make it up the hill and go back to D.
