This is one of the very few videos talking about the basics of color theory that I found digestible. I am am technically familiar with the info you gave here, but I still found it very helpful to watch, especially because I feel this actually gives me the motivation to try and dig deeper into the individual aspects of color theory! A lot of other videos I’ve tried to watch were a lot more confusing and intimidating - but you actually made it sound fun! Thank you so much for making videos like this. ❤ By the way, I found your channel yesterday and watched only a handful of your videos, but I just LOVE watching you paint! Welcome to my list of artists to look up to. :)

This video was really helpful, thank you! I'm an aspiring painter who often struggles with color mixing so this helps a lot.

You are one of the first artists i found to be able to capture the feel of ghibli color in your studies! Most people get pretty close but still feel kinda flat. I’m amazed!

Allison I have to ask you a dumb question. As a crazy art supply addict I have bought I can't even tell you how many gouache colors. Like 100. Holbein and Windsor and Newton. ( Don't ask why I thought that was a great idea) Needless to say...I'm always overwhelmed trying to get started. How do you pick the colors you use? Do you start with a small primary palette and mix from that, or do you put a bunch of colors that you think you will use down on the palette? If you do mix and go from there what colors do you start out with?

I'm not Allison, but i hope this helps! If you feel intimidates try recreating all the range you can get from the Zorn palette (you can find examples of the charts on pinterest). You only need white, yellow ochre, vermillion and ivory black and that gives you basically everything you would need for portrait painting - you can do a nice underpainting with that, and then pop the fancier colours on top. Also try exploring other limited palettes - look up youtube watercolor videos about this topic Arleesha or Teoh Limited palette on yt) , or look for brands designer sets (example:Daniel Smith made secondary set and Juicy Ink made "playing with new watercolors!" video using only these, there are also sets like Jean Haine's set, you can absolutely recreate all those dcolors with your collection and do curated palette and use only that). Good luck!

I totally second what @mald said! Also, for studies like these I spend some time looking at my reference and try to grab only the colors I think I'll need. Having too many options is definitely overwhelming sometimes. James Gurney's KZbin channel is also a great place to look for videos on the Zorn palette. I also usually have some "mud" left over on my palette that helps bring some "spice" to my colors. Starting with a blank palette can be very intimidating for me, so having some old, crusty mixes already on there is great for me. 😂

Love your paintings. I’m just starting and I am fascinated by watching people paint…I have been using quiller color wheel, this artist has several books covering this topic. It’s helping me not be scared to mix colors.

Thank you so much!! I've never heard of the Quiller color wheel, so I'll definitely have to check it out! Getting over the fear of mixing colors is such a huge challenge, but it's so satisfying when you do. :)

Just started to paint with watercolors. I never really done "art" before and definitely never thought about color theory just did what felt righ but I will think about it more now. Off topic are you from Philly because I heard you say hoagie, not sub
