Nice clean Engine !! That shaft should not have broken, did not hear this from other Cat30 owners, with a clean engine like that I have no doubt your keel bolts / studs are all greased up and tightened, your engine looks different from what we had, we had a Kubota M30 24hp 3cyl diesel, did not have problems in the 10 years we had the boat, Nice video !!! love it !!

It’s a beta marine 14, and yeah pretty uncommon for a failure like that! The belt was a touch oversized and we think that the shaft sheared due to harmonic vibration. Never seen a water pump fail like this, I believe it’s pretty uncommon! Thanks for always watching, we love hearing from you!!

Ha! Ha! Yoga for mechanics! Funny! We have a little vintage Boler trailer and every so often it acts up so that you appreciate those many days where it behaves well. I know the pain of learning weird ways to contort the body to fit elbows and wrists into places of our trailer only meant for fingertips. When you're in the middle of the water and it happens, it must have an entire different frustration level... but it makes for a great story - and I'm all about the story!! "Actually, realistically, we should probably have a beer..." - repair complete, re-align priorities!! Thanks for sharing!

Haha you know the poses well! Love those vintage Boler's! It's one thing to make the repairs at a standstill and quite the other while floating/sailing! Certainly makes for great learning, and a good story once your feeling settled and back on the dock. Love hearing from you, Colleen! Cheers!

Excellent video, thanks. just a heads up though, use the thread lock on the pully bolts but antiseize on the pump to block bolts,( just for ease of removal later since water pumps go often) if correct torque is used they will not come out, next only use a very extremely thin film of gasket silicone, rule is, if you have a lot pouring out when you tighten the bolts, there is too much and not good to get gelled up material floating downstream into the small tubes of the heat exchanger. but nice work thank you.
@AllisonandJamesSailing
@AllisonandJamesSailing Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and for the tips! Hindsight is 20/20 and I definitely went a little heavy on the thread lock and gasket sealant. I might take the water pump off again and redo it over the winter, there’s a couple of engine maintenance jobs that I’ve got planned for our off season. Also didn’t know about using anti-seize on the block bolts, thanks for the advice!!
@SVAramoana
@SVAramoana Жыл бұрын
@@AllisonandJamesSailing I used anti-sieze on my bolts to the block last summer. I just used a hint of red RTV Silicone on the gaskets. If I put too much, it would make it easier for the gasket to squish out, not to mention the extra silicone will get into the circulation. But thanks for the video. I wasn’t the only one having water pump problems. My problem on my Perkins 4-108M was a leaking 2nd gasket against the block and not the water pump itself as I originally thought.

i have seen the broken shaft issues in the past, usually caused by bad bearings plus the belt tension, good that you shut down right away, if that ever happens again keep an old rule bilge pump on board. if the pump should fail you can run a hose from either overboard or from the seacock and the output straight into the water pumps intake run either off you batteries or directly from alternator if you have a segregated belt for the alienator otherwise you may need to just use battery.
@AllisonandJamesSailing
@AllisonandJamesSailing Жыл бұрын
We have a feeling that the bearing was on it's way out, interestingly the belt that was on the accessory drive was actually oversized and even with the tensioner maxed there was still plenty of deflection present in the belt. We do keep a spare rule bilge pump on board and have the necessary fitting to jury rig a temporary fix should it happen again, but we're hoping to get a good service life out of the new pump. Thank you for watching and we love hearing your constructive feedback! cheers!

Thanks so much for posting. To be honest this seems to be a normal day of sailing! Things go wrong. I get bored out of my mind in a house - no challenges, feels so lifeless. But sailing is adventure - the majority of that adventure is "man against nature" - it is so much more difficult to travel by boat than by car, and so much more difficult to travel by sailboat than motorboat. As you know. But the reward is in the accomplishment and the experience gained. It is hard work! Great job!

Nice recovery. If you have your dingy and an outboard with you it makes a very serviceable pusher tug. You can either lash it to the stern quarter or if it is an inflatable, butt the nose directly into the stern so that it is just below the swim ladder. Then tie it in place with lines from the aft end of the dingy to the stern cleats. Set the motor speed and lock its tiller and then climb back into the cockpit and steer with the ship's rudder. I used this method when my water pump seized up and left me stranded about 5 miles from the marina. I was able to make about 3 knots with my 2-hp Honda. When we got near the breakwater, one of us got into the dingy to hand the throttle and reverse.
@AllisonandJamesSailing
@AllisonandJamesSailing 2 жыл бұрын
Nice!! Glad you made it into the marina safely! We unfortunately didn't have an outboard at the time, but since have rectified that :) next time we're out we'll rig it up and see how best to 'dinghy tug' our boat around!
@haydenwatson7987

@@AllisonandJamesSailing Towing with a dingy is a losing battle. Pushing works very well. With our C30's the swim ladder makes a nice bow chock for my dingy. I tuck the nose of the kink under the hinge of the ladder and use a couple of lines from the grab handles on the stern of the dink to the stern cleats on the boat. It basically makes it a rigid extension of the hull and all of the power of the outboard goes directly into the stern of the sailboat. FWIW, I used the same setup when I was loading my Labradors. With the boat tied off as described above, I could place my top of my extendable dog ramp between the Pushpit uprights and the bottom end would land on the seat and the dogs would march up and down like an Admiral boarding his flagship.

Normally you torque in a star pattern. I use the black non hardening form a gasket instead of the blue rtv. Spares on my Valiant 40 are starter, fresh water pump, raw water pump, belts, impellers, fuel and oil filters, engine fluids, transmission fluid. You can't carry everything, but having some basics can get you out of trouble. As another poster mentioned, the water pump pulley in the video doesn't appear to spin true. At least in the video it looks out of round. That should be checked and possibly you need a new pulley.
@AllisonandJamesSailing
@AllisonandJamesSailing 2 жыл бұрын
We’ve significantly amended our list of spares and now carry a spare starter, impellers, filters, belts and fluids and will continue to add to these supplies as our budget allows. Agreed there seems to be a bit of a wobble in the video, not sure if it’s an optical illusion of the camera but when we inspected the pulley it seems to be spinning true and in alignment. Thank you for your keen eye and suggestions :) cheers mate!

We sure did! There was a bit of incomplete footage that didn't make the cut. On our Beta the zinc anode is located on the outlet of the heat exchanger as it dumps into the exhaust elbow.

Hi there. There's something really odd about that shaft breaking like that, especially with the force with which it went as described. Beta engives are extremely well made too, and tbh, I'd have that old shaft thoroughly Inspected, plus what was around it to force it to go like that. to me, it had to have somehow seized inside the Pump, or had a much too too tight Pulley putting shaft side pressure in the Bearing ? Head scratching time here, but if it is possible to over tension that pulley to such an effect, imho you really need to get to the bottom of it Fast, or you could be heading for another Water pump Shaft Failure ? I don't think the engine wasn't getting enough water in to also be cooling the pump by the sounds of it, but something really odd has happened that you need to get to the bottom of, after all, that's nothing like being close to being an old engine, and looked after, a Beta should easily last a lifetime. My very best Wishes in getting to the bottom of this, as Boat engines are things we trust Our Lives to, when conditions get very nasty. Fair Winds. Bob . 👍eta typo fixes

I believe that the Beta marine engines are "marinized" Kubota engines which means that you can get engine parts such as that water pump from any Kubota dealer or from the internet. You just need to find out which block it is based on. The same is true for my Universal M25XP which is a D950 Kubota. I can get a water pump on-line in two days for about $50.
@AllisonandJamesSailing
@AllisonandJamesSailing 2 жыл бұрын
You're spot on, they are marinized Kubota engines! We have a beta-marine dealer locally so luckily getting the pump was pretty straight forward. But I will log some part numbers so that I can source parts without the surcharge of going through them! Thanks for the tip Hayden!

a belt that is sometimes too tight can cause the axle to pull, and end up breaking...or is it a fault?
@AllisonandJamesSailing
@AllisonandJamesSailing 2 жыл бұрын
Hard to say exactly what caused the pump to wear. The belt that came off was too large and even with the tensioner maxed out there was still a good amount of deflection in the belt. It’s still a mystery to us! We put the appropriate belt on after we changed the pump and have it tensioned correctly so hopefully this pump outlasts it’s predecessor.
@ajax1137
@ajax1137 2 жыл бұрын
Beta's are known for their reliability and ease of maintenance. That kind of failure seems unusual and rare to me. The only thing I can think of is that the belt may have been way, way too tight. "Does smooth sailing exist?" Living aboard is like home ownership and "van life" only worse. The conditions are much more harsh and the boat never truly sits still, even when anchored. Even new boats have teething problems. Cruising is "fixing broken shit in exotic locations." Just embrace it.
@AllisonandJamesSailing
@AllisonandJamesSailing 2 жыл бұрын
We also thought it an unusual point of failure. The belt that came off was actually too large and the tensioner in the alternator was maxed out with deflection still present in the belt. Perhaps it it was run for a while with a tight belt but as the boat is fairly new to us, we can only speculate as we embrace this new exotic location that we get to do projects in :)

The pulley didn't look like it was running true on the new pump, which may be what fatigued the original shaft that failed. I'd fix that now... or wait 8 years for the new one to fatigue. 😜
@AllisonandJamesSailing
@AllisonandJamesSailing 2 жыл бұрын
I've often wondered what caused the shaft to shear. When I took the water pump off the bearing was intact and the impeller spun freely. When I seated the pully to the shaft (of the new water pump) I made sure that both faces were clean and free from debris and the pully fit snug and square. On close inspection the belt seems to be travelling smoothly and there isn't any vibration in the pullies while under load, so we're hopeful that we get another 8 years out of this pump!

Boats not unlike airplanes do not have an advertised airframe time or “hull” time. So if you buy an old boat, like an old plane BEWARE. You will need to do a full and complete restoration replacing ALL mechanical devices, including engines, pumps, electrical components, generators etc. While your hull cannot be replaced, and may be old, your drive system better be up to date. Dock queens not so much. This is more so if you plan to sail.
@AllisonandJamesSailing
@AllisonandJamesSailing 2 жыл бұрын
That’s a really fair comparison, boats like airplanes only live as long as they’re cared for and maintained. I’d be very nervous about buying an old plane though, maybe one day.

PS to my post below. I'd personally ask Beta Marine if they would like you to send them your old water Pump for them to investigate, just in case there's an issue that needs to ve I vestigated (it may be something like a bad Batch of Steel that isn't up to the necessary standards for example, and other owners may need to be aware of a potential issue, or even have a recall). It's Concerning, because it's the first time I've ever heard of a shaft Failing like that in such an obviously good condition engine. I freely admit to being a bit paranoid about extreme Conditions when Afloat in a Boat, after getting through a number of unpleasant weather events, the worst lasting 3 days of being violently Seasick, hence my love affair with diesel engines, and having a personal policy of getting the next size up engine (same with anchors). My Next boat has a Standard engine that is a 57hp Diesel, but thankfully has a lovely 80hp upgrade option which I'll be going for, which will be there When, not if, it is needed. tbh, that's why I will never entertain having Battery powered electric propulsion on a boat, not even on a Yacht Tender. When you really need the power, Batteries just Don't have the necessary energy Density to Deliver what is needed for anything like long enough. Not with Current Technology, or even into the medium term future. Something Completely New is needed, and hopefully we get it in the not too distant future. Best Wishes. Bob. 👍

Ok. That looks like a Beta engine, so that is a new caution for Beta owners going offshore, carry a spare water circulation pump. No doubt you didn’t buy just one, you bought two? A suggestion I give every one is to become familiar with segmented “v” belts. These are a type of belt that is made up of short segments which are linked together with metal clips so you just buy a few meters of the belt section your engine has and use only as much as you need for the application ie you will always have spare material that fits. Mind you, you should never really need to replace a segmented belt as they last much longer than ordinary “v” belts. The only caution is don’t put you hands near them when they are running as the outer surface is rough.

Interestingly enough the belt that came off was actually too large and the tensioner on the alternator was maxed out with plenty of deflection still in the belt. Perhaps at some point in the service life of the pump it was run with a tight belt but this remains a mystery to us.

As promised in your earlier video when you cleaned the boat in the harbour first - Igor Stropnik's Brilliant How to Sail Beginners Course (I'd been Sailing a single sail dinghy for over 3 years, before I even heard of telltales, let alone knew what they were for, when I did, How simple and awesome are those) Link (pass it around) : kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZvZf3h5dpV3p9k

We've come to the conclusion that the lows are likely responsible for the epic highs of this life. If it all ran smoothly none of it would mean as much, cheers!

You shouldn't need to seal the gasket with silicone. That's what the gasket is for!!

Thanks Howard! In retrospect we realized this as well and next time we need to removed the water pump we will reseat it with just the gasket. Thanks for watching!
