This is actually a compilation of highlights from two separate SF concerts: 01/29/71 at Winterland, and 01/31/71 at Fillmore West. For me the January 1971 SF concerts are the definitive recordings of the original lineup of the band, and capture the Allmans at the height of their powers.

I picked up Dickey Betts hitchiking the afternoon before this concert. Long story short, he stayed at our apartment that night - prefect gentleman, four of us girls let him have our sofa. Late that night my roommate asked me if I'd mind checking on him. He was on the floor of the living room going through our albums. He asked if we had any Allman Brothers, and I said I HADN'T HEARD OF THEM! Next morning I dropped him at the freeway for his next ride, went to work, heard an ad for this concert on the radio, decided to go to the record store next to my Fotomat kiosk in Palo Alto (Banana Records) and check them out. There was Dickey's picture on the album cover!!! I'm 72 years old and still not over it! 😢

First year of college 1971. Unpacking in the dorm, heard Live at the Filmore blasting from second floor. Started up the stairs, met a guy coming down the stairs. He says, you like the Allmans? I said Love them. Back up the stairs we go to his room, fire up a bone and become friends for LIFE. 84 shows and 47 years later we are still best friends. The Road Goes on Forever.

I also remember the Penn State dorms filled with great rock music right from the start, Mont Alto branch campus forestry school in the woods. 1976 -80. Great memories of discovery, Allman Bros, Dead, Boston, Santana, Yes, ZZ, Kansas, Zeppelin... So many more. It was a different world then, alot better I'd say. This music reminds of it every time. So sad Duane isn't still here jammin as an old man but he lives on just the same!

Duane was lefthanded, played the guitar in righthanded position but hell, you already knew that. He never played hard and heavy like Hendrix, Jimmy Page, or Pete Townsend, didn't do much riffing, but listen to the finesse, control, and speed on the frets. Shreds my brain every time I hear him. Nobody ever moved me like he and Robert Johnson, probably because they both played like their souls were on fire.

I basically lived at Fillmore East every week for the 5 or6 buck admission. U couldn't keep me away when Duane and Dickie were in town. The musicality was the thing that distinguished Duane standing apart from a lot of pyrotechnic pickers, which have populated a lot of music. They have their place, but The Bros. total sound was just very very special.. I'll dig it till I'm history, but not B4 passing that knowledge on to anyone not having the full pleasure of it yet.

Beginnings was the first two albums (the self-titled first album, and Idlewild South) packaged together. The first two didn’t sell very well, initially, so they were reissued in 1973, as Beginnings, after they had broken through.

Isam as I was listening to his comments to the crowd on the '71 You Don't Love Me/Soul Serenade it struck me that Duane had a level of maturity way, way, beyond his 24 years at the time. Lots of musicians say you have to make your instrument tell a story. That's true. Duane's playing had something else entirely. He laid bare his soul through his guitar, for all to hear. What we hear, and heard, is pure beauty.

Then I highly suggest reading their biography's. Duane and Gregg both have one each and I have read both. Wonderful book's. I am reading another at the moment about Duane of course titled "Skydog" (The Duane Allman Story) and there are more out there. This is how you learn about your band and a time not long ago where everything was so much better than today. "Keep Hitt'in it".

Actually the Allman Brothers were 2nd billed to Johnny Winter that Fri/Sat. The opening act was Elvin Bishop. Winter refused to go on on Friday and insisted on going on before the Allman Bros on Saturday. I went on Saturday. Elvin Bishop, then Johnny Winter, then a jam session with Dickie Betts, Rick Derringer (playing with Winter), and Elvin Bishop, then the Allman Bros who played for about 2 hours, maybe more.

This is why I love KZbin, and those gracious enough to share gems like this with the rest of the world! There is nothing more extraordinary than to find new versions of your favorite songs that can stun you to silence epitomizing a bands career! A few years ago, thanks to my hubby for whom I am forever in debt to, I was privileged to see Clapton live in an unforgettable night at the Forum. Not trying to seem ungrateful but it wasn't quite like I imagined. Having lost our transportation 2 days before the show when a drunk driver totalled our car parked at our curb, a day before as I ran to give wallet left behind to hubby as he rushed back in to get it, the door split my top lip in half forcing me to wait 8hrs in ER for stitches. After months for the event, I wasn't going to miss out my dream of being a hippie chick at a 70's concert for one night! Seemingly hopeless, my son called into work so we could use his car to drive 4 hrs to L.A.for concert and 4 hrs back home afterwards because needed it back for work by 4am, plus I didn't take pain meds for fear of being sleepy, my lip was swollen behind bandage with people staring, exhausted, so much desire for the experience as a whole kept us determined. Unfortunately, it fell short of our built up expectations. We envisioned the kind of show (like its 70's counterparts), that required a full bodied, mind-blowing experience, with extended psychedelic solos, and encores extending into the night. Don't get me wrong, Clapton was amazing, but the venue wasn't a match. Spoiled by amphitheater concerts with the freedom of space to move about, like concerts back then, was what I hoped for. I 'feel' music and gotta move, some guitar notes force tears of bliss down my face, express joy standing with a hands raised clapping fit while shouting above the crowd into the band's ears "ooooow, yeeaaah, wooohooo" to thank them for reaching my soul. I am relentless, refusing to leave and willing scream till I am horse for encores (aka measurement of love for their fans= length of encore(s)). Instead i was told to remain seated, bumping elbows with my son and hubby, merely confined to a 'seat-dance'. Clapton was unable to play freely (no 'slow hands'), thanks to a tight schedule that ended promptly at 10. For those fortunate enough to have witnessed the 70"s live, or lucky to have such rarities recorded, I have the utmost respect for letting the rest of us enjoy your experiences and stories through your posts. Thank you, don't let such treasures remain under layers of dust, or hold it ransom till the price is right, let the youth love the legends, so the legends can live on- please keep posting! ----'Micha'--hippy baby of a flower child! PEACE!

"fantastic. brings me back to my youth." And my early adult years, my mature adulthood, middle age, and now, my early senior years (57 next month). I've listened to this band my whole life. I was furious when they canned Dickie, but that's been nearly 14 years ago and I've mellowed. Warren and Derek may be standing on the shoulders of giants, but they made the climb and earned the respect of keeping this the best band in the world. I can't count how many line-ups of this band I've seen. -Joe

Excuse me Joe, but 60 is the new 50, and 50 is still middle age! Or at least I like to think so...I'm 61 and I think this was my first ABB show. I believe the last 4 songs were from the 1-31-71 Fillmore West show. Which i will put in my top 5 "Brothers" shows ever. Duane was on fire this night. His " Dreams" solo, and Liz Reed solo, were the best I've ever heard.. When the Brothers were on they could not be touched. Duane, Greg, Berry, & Butch. As jamming now in heaven RIP.

I didn't know it then but this would turn out to be the one and only time I saw the guy live with the band. Fitting that it was a damn fine show. These guys gave boogie a whole new lease. All night long! Thanks for the post.

Wow this concert deserves 2 comments at least. In memory of Elizabeth Reed it's just fantastic on this one. Unique , but I know that they're all unique but this one's really special. Thanks so much for uploading this.

Duane is meteoric at the end of - Don't Keep Me Wondering - such a great groove in this version too. Got to go listen to the rest of the songs, just paused long enough to comment. Absolutely amazing that this was going down in '71. It never got any better than this.

Duane built his solos in long, arcing compositional phrases. That and his note choice, his tone and his technique put him in his own league.

Jeez, I have loved this band for 40 years and I am SO glad to hear this concert that I've missed until now. Amazing performance and the quality is fine for the era. THANK YOU to the "poster" for this gem! The Brothers are just so damn special, I'll be listening to them forever. I've actually heard "Whipping Post" in a dream.

It’s weird, I’m also one of a gang of friends who also saw the Allmans,a lot of us played music, but we all knew good music. We all traveled around the northeast catching them.( all bands were a true bargain, we didn’t know)Saw them, no lie,20 times.Owned the 1st two LPs, naturally bought Live at F. E.,I wasn’t gonna comment, but a lot of you are dead right, this is the band that came from infancy to be who I remember all those great shows. Peace, Rocky

This was an Awesome concert.. But you can hear when they played this concert, How they progressed, In A Very Short Time to a higher level of Musicianship to the Live at The Fillmore in New York.. I Believe that it was Duane Kicking them in the Ass, telling them that we can play better at the next Show, Duane was always the Band Leader, and if you did not agree with him, He would tell you to hit the Road, Duane Was The Master band Leader, R.I.P. Brother, I will see you in Rock & Roll heaven, I can't wait.. Cousin Figel

Donald Maxwell , you are very correct on that, as History has it, when they First got to Jam with each other, the feeling in the room was Awesome, and Duane did tell them, Quote, "If anyone does Not want to be in this Band, you have to go through Me", Meaning, if you want to leave , you have to Kick My Ass to get out the Door to Leave, Cheers Man, Cousin Figel

Cousin Figel glad you posted that. I'm 65 and saw them twice right before Fillmore Album recording at Ludlow Garage in Cincinnati. Once was a buck, once free. They said it was practice for going to Fillmore East in like 1970 or 71. I've never seen a concert I liked any better. About 200 people were in attendance. Never seen anything like an almost empty Ludlow Garage hosting what I thought was the best white boy blues band anywhere in this world. Still think it too. That will never happen again. I love the children of ABB. Warren Haynes, Derek and Susan Trucks. So many. The Allmans just keep on giving. I'll tell you I love what Chris Robinson is doing too. Just moved to Denver. It's music heaven compared to Cincinnati. Chris was just here. Missed it. Damn guys, I love people who love the blues.

One of the greatest bands ever! There is the religious theme [Ain't my cross to bear/Trouble No more] there is the jazz theme [Kinda Bird / Les Brers in A minor/ Desdemona] They were never afraid to push out and try something new. They satisfied those that wanted to hear the standards but included some work that became 'standards.' They survived death, internal struggle, poor management , incompetent music executives, and changing tastes. Pretty resilient band.

Well I wound up back here where MUSIC LIVES!! GermanOperaSinger you got great taste in music, Brother!! The man who remastered these shows so we could hear them was a genius named, Capt. Skipper!!! One of the best cats to ever grant us the great privilege of hearing many shows from the Duane Allman years of his band, The Allman Brothers, and his legacy is being heard right now!!! Great dude who loved these Southern Rockin' Blues as much as we did! Hey, Singer, visit my Face Book page McDs Place if you want! My collection of over 40 years is for sale!! Duane's Page is right next door! McD in Macon, GA. Thanks for sharing!!!

What I find most amazing about these performances is how much more advanced these guys were as musicians than their live records suggest. Duane and Dickey are two of my main influences and I consider myself quite familiar with their recorded output. Nonetheless, their playing on this recording just boggles the mind.

I have 2 of the F.West run but I think they played 5 shows over a 3 or 4 day gig!! Everyone was on fire the entire run!! If the different people who cannot just put together a box set of these shows remastered, the whole bunch of them would add a fatness to each of their bank accounts! Eric, SRV' people, Hendrix, Santana and of course, the Dead have made a mint just by transforming their individual mindsets toward the fans!!! Most of us still hunt down the boots, especially video!! It is really a waste of time just making lawyers happy!!!

My first ever concert was the Allman Brothers, in Houston. I can't remember if it was '71, or '72. Saw them twice while Duane was still alive. At one performance, the band took a break, and Butch Trucks and Jaimoe stayed on stage and played an extended drum duet for about 15 minutes before the rest of the band came back on stage. It was awesome...

Matthew, you said it brother. Don't Keep Me Wonderin' is a song that doesn't get the attention it deserves. It was an original composition. Duane makes hits the note at the end! I like the use of your word "meteoric" to describe Duane's sound!!
